Golden Rule, one of the oldest barbecue joints in the USA, opened its doors in Irondale in 1891. Growing up, this was always my family's favorite. My dad would pick up pork sandwiches or a pound of pork, and we would eat it with Golden Flake potato chips and drink Coca-Cola. My dad, now in his 80s, still loves Golden Rule. The staff were excellent. Everyone was friendly and helpful. The brisket was dry and a little tough. The collards were on the sweet side which I didn't care for. The okra was good. The food was a little slow coming out. I didn't specify sauce on the side so I got sauce covering my brisket. Other restaurants I've been to always ask if you want sauce so I didn't think to specify. The reason I gave 3 stars was because of the great staff.

I hesitate to give it 5 stars because the place does need a makeover. But, the food it’s on point! Don’t give it another thought and try this place. Southern BBQ Alabama style at it’s best. The home made sauce is worth all the fuss. I had the rib place for lunch and I could barely get up. Sides where plentiful and delicious. My wife had the sliced pork plate and was asking when are we going to return. BTW, if you like coleslaw, try this one!
