“Ideally, this place deserves a 4.5/5.Nestled in the heart of Millbrae, Hana Izumi is a hidden gem that offers an experience that transcends mere dining. They have a prix fixe menu that changes every month. My friends and I went there in February. Our prix fixe menu was $98/person plus taxes. For our prix fixe menu, we had the option to pick one from the 2 entrees. You will definitely be full by the end of your meal.Note- We were a party of 3, and our bill included a 20% tip by default.Service:The service at Hana Izumi was good. The staff was attentive (except for the 2 times when we had to ask them to refill our hot tea) yet unobtrusive. Our host was knowledgeable and passionate, guiding us through the intricate kaiseki menu with genuine enthusiasm.Ambiance:Restaurant's soft lighting bathes the small space, adorned with minimalist décor and natural elements, creating a tranquil atmosphere.Food:Kobachi 3 Ways amuse bouche was a delightful prelude, showcasing the chef's artistry and precision with 3 miniature bites brimming with diverse flavors and textures. It included goma tofu, duck, and octopus. Goma tofu topped with uni was delectable. The octopus was surprisingly not as chewy as you'd usually expect. The duck was pretty good as well. The assorted sashimi included bluefin tuna, yellowtail, and ocean trout. It was impeccably fresh, and each piece just melted in our mouths.Hirame Nanban was a revelation. The perfectly crisp halibut paired beautifully with the sweet onion vinaigrette, creating a delightful contrast. The Maezawa Wagyu Soba was a fancy indulgence. The tender Wagyu beef, simmered in a savory sukiyaki broth, melted on the tongue, while the slightly firm soba noodles provided a satisfying textural contrast. The tara shirako chawanmushi was also really good, offering a unique and delicate flavor profile with its creamy egg custard and hint of sake. For the entree, I opted for the Negitoro Chirashi Bowl, a visual masterpiece with its vibrant colors and generous portion of chopped fatty bluefin tuna. Each bite was a burst of umami, perfectly complemented by the seasoned sushi rice. My friends tried their Dungeness crab zo-sui and loved it.This place is definitely worth a visit. The parking in the area can be hard to find, so please plan to arrive a little early. I looked for parking for 15 minutes and eventually ended up parking in the residential area up the hill.“

“Located in downtown Millbrae and unassuming from the outside, but fish freshness inside! Came here for a weekday dinner so it wasn't crowded and the servers were very polite. Miso soup was good but no tofu, and salad could've used more dressing. The Negitoro (fatty tuna, green onion) roll and there was wasabi inside, I enjoyed this. The Deluxe Sushi which included 8 pieces total - 2 pc tuna, yellowtail, halibut, salmon, shrimp, salmon roe, egg/tamago. The egg had a hint of sweetness. The yellowtail sashimi entree came with 10 pieces and soup & salad. Each piece of fish was fresh and delicious! I left feeling satisfied with, would come again to try their other dishes and specials.“

“Ai Grill's charm is definitely the automatically rotating skewer system and the binchotan charcoal that they bring out just for your table once you place your order. Paired with the neon lights and stylish interior, a bbq dinner here definitely felt tasted like a premium experience while still supporting a local mom and pop restaurant. My friend and I had a great time here ordering via the ala carte skewers, wagyu fried rice, and a sweet potato fries side. The skewers were packed with smoky umami with our favorites being the lamb, US prime beef, and pork jowl. The sweet potato fries were also so light and crispy that we couldn't help but grab more - we finished this at lightning speed. Our server was so sweet and attentive, giving us detailed instructions on the best cooking time/sauce pairing for each meat, checking in several times with water, and offering free watermelon and coupons to finish off the meal. Overall this was a super satisfying dinner for both food and service quality. Just one minor critique I have is that Ai Grill's price point positions this to be a "once in a while" dinner rather than an easy splurge, despite skewers being a street food genre. I tend to think of beef and lamb skewers as the showstealers when it comes to Chinese bbq, but beef skewers starting at ~$7 here brings some hesitation to go big with the first skewer order. I genuinely hope that Ai Grill keeps growing their customer base since their weekend service still had space to fill when we went (granted we went right at opening time).“

There are also long table where people can share tables if they don't have big group. You order using a barcode or they will give you tablet to order. Pretty straightforward and easy to operate. Food comes in a little late but not too long. Servers are all nice and kind.Food is great! I love the cumin lamb, spices are pretty good but I wish it has a little more sauce on it and a tad more savory. But that's what additional soy sauce are for! Fish balls are mediocre, it's sweet instead of spicy, which is a little disappointing. All in all, I will try going back again!“

“Last night, I had the pleasure of dining at Wakuriya in San Mateo, and I must say, the experience was quite remarkable. From the moment I stepped in, the serene and welcoming ambiance set the stage for what was an exquisite culinary journey. The service at Wakuriya was impeccable. The staff were attentive and knowledgeable, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable dining experience. Each course of the kaiseki menu was presented beautifully, showcasing a blend of traditional Japanese culinary artistry with subtle Californian influences. The highlights for me were the braised sea bass with its delicate yuzu gelee and the perfectly cooked Wagyu beef, which was both tender and flavorful. However, while the food and service were exceptional, I have some reservations about its Michelin star status. The quality and presentation were top-notch, but I felt that the overall experience, while delightful, did not fully align with other Michelin-starred restaurants I’ve visited in terms of creativity and culinary innovation.Additionally, considering the price point, I found Wakuriya to be slightly overpriced. While I understand and appreciate the quality of ingredients and the skill involved in preparing such dishes, the cost seemed a bit steep when weighed against the overall dining experience. In conclusion, Wakuriya is undoubtedly a great restaurant that I would recommend for those seeking high-quality Japanese cuisine in San Mateo. The serene atmosphere and meticulously prepared dishes make for a memorable dining experience. However, if you’re looking for a Michelin star-level experience, you might want to temper your expectations slightly, especially considering the price. Nonetheless, Wakuriya remains a gem in San Mateo’s culinary scene, and I am glad to have experienced its offerings.“

“We were craving Japanese food and discovered this restaurant in San Carlos. It's a family-owned business located at the corner, with 1-2 tables outdoors. There were no issues with the service, and you can watch as they prepare and slice the sashimi in front of you. We visited during lunchtime, so they offered a lunch special bento box. We ordered a Sake Don (Salmon) and a Bento Box with pork katsu and spicy tuna rolls. Both came with a bowl of miso soup. The salmon sashimi was fresh, served with about 10 slices over the sushi rice. The pork katsu was deep-fried to perfection, and the salad was fresh. The spicy rolls were okay. Overall, the food quality is excellent, and everything tastes fresh. I enjoyed our selections; however, the portion size is smaller than expected for the price. We found ourselves a bit hungry after the meal.“

Ichido Restaurant Japanese
50 Apparel Way, San Francisco - 9.84 miles

“I had one of my favorite dining experiences of all time at Ichido, a pop up restaurant with a California-Japanese tasting menu held at Sequoia Sake's brewery. It was super fun and interactive, as Chef Geoff prepares the food right next to the communal table and guests can come up to watch or ask questions. He also describes each dish as it's served, including how he actually caught the halibut himself that we were about to eat! My favorite dish was the Soba Noodles w/Herring, Charred Onion Wholegrain Mustard, Fuji Apple & Fried Garlic. If you've been to Lazy Bear, Ichido is almost like an Asian version with an interactive, industrial vibe..plus sake is included with the meal! The chocolate dessert was so rich and delicious, hard to believe it was vegan and made w/yams and tofu! The Sequoia Ginjo sake was so smooth and paired so well with everything that I ended up buying a bottle to take home. Definitely recommend for a special night out!“

“In a nutshell; despite how busy it was, line rather went by quickly, food is top tier, it is cafeteria style eatery but the upon and tempura is worth it.Busy Saturday lunch hour, but I'd say it took about 8-15 mins of being in line before we got to give our order. Food was prepped. as you move along down the line and just grab a few tempura of various food that you fancy, head at the end of the line and just Pay as your food will be good to go. Had to sit outside and see how long the line has gotten. Few birds may surround you and it seemed that the couple on the next table had the unfortunate incident of a bird do a doo-doo on their clothing but seemed like a rare occurrence as it didn't seem to be common as we just enjoyed our meal outside for quite some time with no incident, so I guess just a word of caution. The udon is great regardless of which one you pick and the tempura's crispy crunchy delicious. Overall if you happen to swing by the mall and want good affordable Japanese udon/tempura then this is a place to visit.“

“Nothing but good words about Shabu house, my favorite Shabu chain! Always hit the spot in every location I've been to because they're consistent with their flavor and quality. Staff is always so friendly here even when very busy. This location is relatively large compared to their other two locations in San Francisco. Great spot for parties/ large groups of five plus and more. They take reservations for larger groups but I normally come with one or two friends at most and get seated pretty quickly. I like that there sign in to join the waitlist is on a large whiteboard easily visible.I ordered the Large Individual Shabu Entree - lamb with spicy miso soup, and was already pretty stuffed halfway through, but everything was so good so I powered through it LOL. The entree comes with a large platter of thinly cut meat( cut to order), a large platter of vegetables including cabbage, spinach, mushroom, Enoki mushroom, carrots, and tofu and carb options including udon and rice included. I love that they give you the whole Sesame bottle now along with the ponzu sauce to refill at your own pace. I could literally drink their sesame sauce... it's just that good to me. I like to add garlic and green onions to my ponzu sauce, and sesame sauce in a separate bowl.Parking is a doozy here, hit or miss depending on what time you go and if it is a weeknight or weekend. There's residential parking on the same block as a restaurant and needed parking on the main road. The entrance of the restaurant is very unassuming, and tucked on a very quiet street.Great spot, awesome vibes, there's always sports playing at the bar. Save room for the complimentary ice cream. Lastly, big FYI, they automatically charge a service fee AKA tip (regardless of your party size).“

“The staff are very friendly and helpful, so no matter if its your first time trying sushi or someone who trusts the chef and orders the omakase you'll enjoy your meal here!My usual order is the clam miso soup, the mixed poke, and the smoked sake (salmon) nigiri. For those that like rolls, there's no bad choices here and I try a new one every time I eat in. There's beer on tap too, so get a pitcher of Saporo for the table to kick off the weekend celebration. :)Vegetarian options: Lots of vegetarian options and there are some vegan options as well.Dietary restrictions: Plenty of items also are marked if they are gluten free up front, which is nice so you don't have to ask. Chef and the owner are great so you can also likely communicate any other dietary restrictions.Parking: There are spots in front of the business on Grand ave. There are also additional spots on the nearby street Cypress ave.“

Sushi Tei Japanese •

“Cute packaging, very good quality fish, beautiful presentation. Omakase box comes with 10 nigiris for $75, which is a pretty solid deal. Pick up from a ghost kitchen - parking might be challenging, but they had it ready during the pick up window. One feedback I would give is the rice separated a lot from the fish, couldn't tell if it was supposed to be sushi rice or brown rice or some other rice with some sauce - it was grainier and harder than the typical omakase nigiri rice, and honestly the temp of the rice was quite cool even 1 hour after pick up. Nevertheless, really enjoyed the meal and might try something else next time.“

Wonderful inviting place for something special, but you’ll leave and wanna do this regularly! Definitely going to try the full omakase menu sometime.“

“My partner and I wanted to eat hot pot and Shabu Shack was perfectly located near our place. We went in around 8:30pm and were seated pretty quickly. Staff was attentive and quick. The atmosphere was clean, organized, and open. Between the two of us (and we weren't outrageously hungry), we shared: a large Kobe beef in medium sichuan spicy broth, Kobe fries, and potstickers. I also had a lychee soju beverage, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Overall we enjoyed all the the dishes. The hot pot broth (medium special sichuan) was yummy but a little too punchy and spicy. I might opt for mild or a different broth next time. The large portion of beef was the perfect amount between the two of us for being not too hungry. My partner really loved the Kobe fries. Overall, I would totally come back again. While I felt it was a little pricier (paid a total of $85 and we could have went to an AYCE hot pot for about the same amount), I enjoyed the meal, service, and close location. If you're in the area, I'd recommend you try this spot.“

“I don’t normally write reviews but this place I just HAD to. I didn’t take pictures of all the food but we got the black truffle edamame, uni nigiri, sweet shrimp nigiri and the 20 pc sashimi. All of the food was too good! I was very very impressed, the sashimi melted in your mouth and perfect texture and the uni was just perfect. When I tried the edamame I was very impressed and it was very reasonably priced! I will say going into it I was definitely a little annoyed since we waited a lil long ngl and so was my mom due to being really hungry but the staff was still very sweet and accommodating, she even gave us free shots and tried to get us a table asap !! I will definitely be coming back and recommending this place to my friends :) it was raining really hard and super windy when we came as shown in the video but still definitely worth the meal.“

“I was staying at the hotel right next-door. It was just a few steps away which was good because I did not rent a car. I got the chicken teriyaki and it was very tasty and it was filling as well. It’s a very good choice for a quick meal. It doesn’t stay open very late at night so you’ll need to make sure you get there before it closes. Not much for atmosphere so I took the food to go.“

BentoSprout Japanese •
212 2nd Ave, San Mateo - 4.15 miles

“We provided BentoSprout bentos for our guests at our wedding in Mill Valley and our families and friends LOVED their bentos (of course we did too bc we chose it duh lol)!!! TLDR: if you’re looking for delicious, balanced, beautiful, healthy, authentic bento boxes for your event (wedding, birthday, other celebration, office gathering, etc) AND want to support business that is Japanese-woman owned, we highly recommend BentoSprout! If you want to make the bento boxes fit a more formal setting, you can have it in wooden boxes that are compostable and also add a furoshiki cloth (locally and support an AAPI-owned business if you can) for a very reasonable additional cost. They look so nice while being minimalist. It was the perfect amount of food for a wedding for everyone and for those with a bigger appetite, it would be totally more than enough with a few appetizers. My husband is Japanese and it was so important for us to reflect his culture in the food we offered at our wedding and it needed to be delicious and perfect, which Mireille’s bentos were. His family have very high standards for food and they enjoyed their bentos wholeheartedly and were emphatic about how skillful she must be for the dishes in the bentos to have come out as perfectly as they did. Her bentos are beautiful and so thoughtful, as well as balanced, and above all so incredibly tasty. We had a tasting for her bentos and we were so impressed then, and hard to believe but it was even better on the day of our wedding!Mireille is so easy to work with and extremely communicative and accommodating. We had a number of guests with dietary restrictions and preferences and she was so careful and meticulous in ensuring that she understood them perfectly and then prepared them without issue and our guests really enjoyed their meals.Mireille, thank you so much for making our day extra special with the love and care you put into your bentos and food. Thank you for all the emails you exchanged with us and double checking, as well as the thoughtful and generous touch you did for our bentos given our budget. It made us so happy to see how much our families and friends enjoyed our food, and we of course loved our own meals that day thoroughly!Photo credit: Photography by Vee“

“Although I have had their cheesecakes on several occasions, this was the first time actually going to their location in Stonestown for two cakes for my wife's b'day. I was the first customer when they opened at 11 am but the only thing that they had available was their pumpkin cheesecake and had to wait an hour as their matcha and original were still baking. No worries as I paid and picked them up when they were ready.“

“I ordered the “Deluxe Chirashi Bowl” on DoorDash and was satisfied with the meal. Some points:1. Overall, the cuts of fish are very high quality. I applaud them for this. Chu-toro was cut generously.2. The sauces are too overpowering. It felt way too salty with how much ponzu was drizzled. Traditionally, chirashi/kaisen don bowls should highlight the fish. I felt like I was tasting too much sauce for my liking. The rice was not enough to “balance out” the saltiness. Then, there was also this sour-sweet relish that, by itself, could be good. But they drizzled so much of it I couldn’t taste the fish/rice anymore. Overall, too much sauce.3. I appreciated how they added their “signature touch” to the chirashi bowl with puréed yam. It balanced the salmon.4. Presentation is very good. I liked how they scored the salmon. Good touch.5. For a deluxe chirashi bowl, I was let down with only a single piece of uni and a single piece of amaebi. Usually, uni should come in two pieces? Somewhat understandable, since Santa Barbara uni is expensive these days (I’m pretty sure it’s Santa Barbara uni).6. Rice is okay—nothing special unfortunately. I admit I have pretty high standard with my sushi rice though.“
