This bakery that was once opened on Lakeshore and E18th street closed down for good this year 2023...thanks Merritt Bakery and Restaurant for all the good times we all had back in the day.

I really hope this establishment has not closed down permanently. The owner was so gracious when I ordered their delicious strawberry shortcake and fried chicken for a party. They even brought my order out to my car while it was raining. The food is amazing and the customer service was unmatched. We love you Merritt!! Thank you for being the quintessential place to get fried chicken and strawberry shortcake in the Bay Area!!

Today ordered 40 pcs fried chicken for birthday get together with family. To my surprise could not order chicken over the phone, was told that I had to come in to order & pay. Having to make 2 trips for fried chicken does not make sense. They should join current times and let us pay online, so that we make only one trip. Disappointed on order that I spent $120, majority of chicken was made up of drumstick & wings. Only 3 breast meats, 10 thighs and the rest wings & drumsticks....will find other businesses that will give a decent amount variety and not take advantage of their customers. A shame that a business built on a reputation of having good fried chicken has changed for the worse.

This place is worthless now. They want $19 for 2 pieces of chicken and a 1/2 pint mac and cheese. I placed my order then the lady tells me shortly after they have no mac and cheese. What ??? I won't be back. Sad to say Merritt Bakery is pretty much a memory now. I'm surprised they can even stay open at these prices and the chicken tasted nothing like before. Sad. They didn't have thighs either and kitchen closes by 3pm. Update your hours and run a business properly is my advice!

Clean, pleasant. Had food to go so didn't have service. Felt warm, comfortable; smaller location form former spot. Parking is on the street, not good but not their fault.

I really really want to like the pastries here, especially the strawberry cake since the other place closed.The sponge is very different here. Quite heavy as compared to the other place, not nearly the quantity of fresh strawberries or whipped cream and it's pricey. $9.50! Hubby said it tasted old. I guess the glaze on the strawberry is used as a preservative because the other place never did that. Their slices turned over more quickly I suppose.This time I stopped in mid afternoon and there was more of a selection in the case. Cookies, pies, cakes, banana pudding, etc. There were some Santa cookies that looked store bought though.Hubby asked about fried chicken because we used to get it at the original location. It appears on the menu so we will need to have a lunch date here to give it a try.Merritt Bakery is an Oakland institution that we don't want to see go away. Please consider making some changes to keep the customers coming back.

Late post from this afternoon, went to Merritt bakery and purchase 1 coke $4.951 strawberry soda $4.951 strawberry cake $9.51 bananas cream pie $8.5I lost the recipe but the price I listed maybe off by a few cent, anyways I spent about $29 which if fine to me I dont mind paying for it, but man let me tell you. My soda came in a large coffee cup for 5 dollars? Ok whatever, but when I saw how small was my pie for dame near almost $9? That was crazy I got alittle upset and told the server that I want them to tell the manager that I wont be coming back, dont get me wrong the server was nice but I'm not going back for the skimpy slice and stale cake.

you gotta skip this place!! the staff are disgusting! literally seen a kitchen staff member smoke cigarettes outside and rushed into the kitchen to prepare my food right away!! also, baker (older lady about 60 yrs old, hispanic) was very rude when trying to take my order for cake.

I just called to place an order (the current time is 4:30) the business hours say they close at 6. After being placed on hold I was then told The kitchen was closed and I could not order chicken. When I asked what time the kitchen closes I was placed on hold again. The person returned and said the kitchen normally closes at 5:30 but we got a lot of large orders and we can't fill everyone's order, all I could say was WOW!

I've been buying their strawberry shortcake on every occasions for nearly 20 years. Bought one couple days ago because I was craving for it. But it changed. Not only the look of it also it's flavor and textures are changed. Im 100% positive they've changed their baker. I was so disappointed and very sad. For comparison I added recent pic and the one that I purchased some months ago. You could tell it has changed tremendously in worst way. Why? Why? Just why? Newer one has less strawberries and not appealing outlook also it was very very dry. I poured milk on it just to try to make it eatable and it didn't help. 52.24$ wasted. Never going back. Bye bye strawberry short cake... sad face :'-(
