My wife is Guatemalan so we always come here when near San Mateo. Comfort food cooked as good as she grew up with in Guate; the tamals are as delicious as I've had anywhere in Guatemala (with the only exception being my wife's mother's tamals lol). If you want to try something different than the countless Mexican places in the area, try Juanita!
This is the abuelita's cooking right here! I had never tried Guatemalan food we got there at 9 they close at 10 and they still took us in. Service was okay and food took a while to come out but it was so worth the wait. I order El caldo de Gallina to go and had it for breakfast it was just the perfect way to starty day!

Why do I always give five stars to my posts? Because I won't diss a place because it doesn't appeal to me. I enjoyed an early morning breakfast at La Chapina. This restaurant/ bakery is a working person's early morning fuel stop. No frills, but decent coffee, great central American pastries, hot breakfast and lunch menu, like traveling in Guatemala in the middle of the peninsula megalopolis.
