“Small, intimate Japanese spot! Great for all occasions. I celebrated two birthdays here with my friend. The staff and the chef are great! The omakase here is a great experience! The chawanmushi, the miso black cod, and the panna cotta were all delicious! If there were ever a place to gatekeep it would be this! Definitely call ahead for a reservation!“
“Located in busy downtown San Mateo, this is an outstanding Japanese restaurant! Traditional preparation and high quality seafood. Be sure to try call in for a reservation, as this place is very popular. In fact, we had a 5:00 pm reservation and learned that the fresh oysters were already sold out(fortunately, they spared one order for us). Highly recommend their 8 piece sushi omakase. Loved their agadeshi tofu: fried tofu in warm broth. Their chawan mushi is another great starter, steam egg with chicken, fish cake.“
“Met my elder neighbors here for dinner last night. It's a very small restaurant- seating around 20-25 but gosh was this place packed to the max with lines out the door. While we were seated several parties came in but there was no space. Typically people would just head next door to the next place but every single walk in insisted on waiting. Now that in itself is enough to tell you how great this place was!The food was authentic and delicious - lots of variety and the dessert was a hit - do not pass on the dessert! Everything sounded great so we ordered - variety for the table and shared. We left very happy. You should definitely stop by!“
“I want to give 5 stars because the food is consistently good and value oriented. I can't remember a bad meal that I have had here. The only real complaint that I have is that despite the fairly high number of times we have eaten here, we are still treated like new customers.. No hello, good to see you again.. Although it is very petty, I noticed that tables were being given a complementary sorbet serving at the meal end. They forgot ours.. I know my wife will say I'm being ridiculous but I am kind of disappointed. No very disappointed ☹️.“
“DASH has been a favorite of ours since before they moved from behind the theater. The food is consistently good, the service is good, and while it's pricier than some of the lower end sushi places it's still a good deal for what you get. My wife picked DASH for my surprise 40th birthday party and they accommodated 8 of us easily.“
“I don’t normally write reviews but this place I just HAD to. I didn’t take pictures of all the food but we got the black truffle edamame, uni nigiri, sweet shrimp nigiri and the 20 pc sashimi. All of the food was too good! I was very very impressed, the sashimi melted in your mouth and perfect texture and the uni was just perfect. When I tried the edamame I was very impressed and it was very reasonably priced! I will say going into it I was definitely a little annoyed since we waited a lil long ngl and so was my mom due to being really hungry but the staff was still very sweet and accommodating, she even gave us free shots and tried to get us a table asap !! I will definitely be coming back and recommending this place to my friends :) it was raining really hard and super windy when we came as shown in the video but still definitely worth the meal.“
“On the cheaper side for food, and it's amazing. Haven't tried their ramen but tonkatsu curry is great.Takoyaki is more on the soft side, and karaage isn't crispy— but good. It's a different style— liking it would be preference.“
“4.5 stars, rounded up.Thumbs up:- Very tasty food- Hearty portions- Very affordable (for Bay Area) prices- Strong selection of food and drinks- Not a long wait, even on a Friday nightMeh:- Service wasn't the most attentive- Really really loud :(. Hard to have a conversation“
“We go here for Sushi. The fish tastes fresh and they have a good variety of classic rolls. Usually the staff are pretty attentive and orders arrive as expected.Parking: I usually park at the parking structure on 3rd and B street and walk over. S.Claremont St. Sometimes there is street parking depending on what time of day you go.“
“Cannot say enough great things about Tokie’s! We find ourselves coming here more and more. Everything here is just done right. It has the dining area with bar seating, frequently playing sports. But it’s sectioned off so it doesn’t impact the diners. Cocktails are great, the sake is great, the food is great, the prices are great, it’s all just great! Our service is always fantastic (Sho is the best) and you can tell the owner not only cares about his establishment, but also his community.“
“Off the main strip of downtown San Mateo, tho rivals the more popular stops there (ex: Sam's)House sake was delicious Speed of service was fastRolls are big, so take this into account when ordering. We did 3 rolls for 2 ppl and had leftovers, which is unusual for us. Interior is not the nicest / most aesthetic, so if you're in search of a cute date spot, would look elsewhere.“
“My fiancé surprised me with this for Valentine's day and I couldn't be happier! He ordered the omakase box & the tuna box and both were impeccable. The flavors were so unique, the fish was so fresh, and the presentation!! Literally gorgeous. Pick Up: They have pickup locations in San Francisco, San Mateo, and Hayward. The SF location is in the Sunset district! They were on time & super easy to find. Pickup was seamless :) Tuna Box: There were so many new flavor combinations in this box that I haven't tried before and that work so well. For example, truffle and parmesan on tuna!? Both parm & tuna have such strong flavors and I was worried it wouldn't mesh well together but it was so delicious. One of my favorite pieces! One of the pieces had this pate on it, it was perfectly salty and creamy. The otoro piece - SO BUTTERY. Literally tastes like the quality of tuna I had in Japan. Omakase Box: I loved the variety in this box!! It was my first time having raw mini octopus and it had the perfect chew to it. I loved the uni w/ ikura piece, the uni was so fresh and creamy and the ikura burst with flavor. Both boxes come with freshly grated wasabi and a cute soy sauce bottle. The pieces honestly didn't even need soy sauce because they had so much flavor. We'll definitely order from here again!“
“So I was walking down the street and saw this place. It looked clean and inviting. I sat down and Mimi was right there with a warm and enthusiastic smile. Make sure to request her she is top notch. I got the Korean BBQ. Everything on the plate was so good. Shout out to my mom. I ate Brussel sprouts. I was shocked as well. They were so good. The plate was just bursting with flavor. Just wish my stomach could hold it all. Then Mimi came over and asked if I wanted dessert. I some how found the room for the brownie Sunday. Do not leave the restaurant until you try the Sunday. The best ever. Top notch restaurant with fantastic food and great service.“
“Awesome people with good quality food at a reasonable price. Alex and his family have been serving great food for years now and they haven't cut any corners even when produce were at a ridiculous 3x price hike. This establishment is a local favorite and they're worth every dollar.“
“My visit to this sushi bar was a memorable one. The service was friendly and prompt, making me feel like a valued guest. The food was a revelation – the quality and presentation of the sushi were exceptional. The ambiance transported me to Japan, with its soothing music and minimalist design. It's the perfect place to unwind and savor some of the best sushi in town.“
“Waited about 20 minutes for the food. Very nice server though. Got the beef negi maki with shumai and tempura combo, tasted good but more like Chinese-Japanese fusion than Chinese. Friend got ahort ribs, and it tasted a bit pre-prepared though the flavor was good. Very pretty amd clean place, clean bathrooms too. Though, don't make special requests, especially on sashimi, or you might find an extra $3 charge on your bill.Wheelchair accessibility: Accedible bathrooms and tables but no parking for wheelchairs“
“This sushi place may look like your typical corner sushi joint, but it is actually very authentic. In addition to their delicious sushi, they also offer Korean dishes that are worth trying out. What surprised me the most is that they have gluten-free soy sauce and several gluten-free options on their menu. I have been a loyal customer for the past three years, and I must say that the atmosphere and environment inside the restaurant are pretty nice. The staff is also awesome and very kind, which adds to the overall experience.“
“Delicious poke place! I ordered delivery, but since you can choose two servings of rice, I don't recommend two servings of brown rice haha. It was nice that it was open until late. Oh, and it seems like there are plenty of small bowls. We ordered online and we built our own. The food was delicious! I want to try different sauces next time!“
“Saw people bringing up Kazunori but can you really compare the two? Kazunori lacked the specialty sets that Taki Nori offers. We both ordered their premium set, which included Japanese scallops, lobster, wagyu, and uni & toro hand rolls. We also tried a few of their other hand rolls a la carte style. The uni handroll was easily our favorite (Japanese uni btw!).Handroll Project is still the better value, but this is a nice addition to Bay Area. Service was also good - the server we had was very attentive and prompt. We did have a small issue with snow crab running out, but the server resolved it for us. Overall a good experience here for us.“
“My first time here and will definitely be returning. I used to work in the area and always wanted to try this place. I'm glad I finally did. The server was very friendly and welcoming. The food came out super fast too. Everything tasted fresh and the food was very good. I only got sushi but they have other options if sushi isn't your thing. Highly recommend. Will be returning.“
“You only realize why it’s hard to score a reservation at this 8 seater sushi counter until you try Chef Yoshizumi special sashimi and nigiri tasting menu. Nestled in downtown St Mateo, this Japanese oasis that looks like your neighborhood sushi joint have some of freshest & tastiest seafood I have ever tried. From the Japanese delightful Amberjack to buttery Kinki(Japanese rockfish) to delicious Bonitos nigiri to sea eel nigiri from southern Japan that literally melts in your mouth. Watching the knife action of Chef Yoshizumi was a real treat, he was kind, nice and always smiling. Service was on point and their Sake tasting and choices were delightful and complimentary to the fish courses. The egg custard cake at the end was scrumptious but we didn’t really like the almond custard dessert. Definitely worth the trip and worth another visit.“
