Maki Sushi

“Old school, as in decades old turning out two menu items: 1. Small Bento - $9 (1 hand formed unseasoned musubi, 1 piece maki sushi with seasoned tuna and dried shrimp, 1 plain sushi, 1/3 boiled hotdog, seasoned tofu, and 3 boneless pieces of sweet chili pepper chicken thigh). The seasoning for the sushi rice is very light, not vinegar and slightly sweet. 2. Large Bento $11 (Add an well seasoned inari sushi, slice of luncheon meat and boiled shrimp). Items have changed over the years and there was a momentary dip in quality when the matriarch passed and the next generation found its footing but it's back. Warning: All the food is premade and is at room temp. If it bothers you, it's called a microwave. Will you like it? That depends. When it comes to old school okazuya flavors, what you grew up with is what you think is good. This is the food I grew up with. Fourth generation Japanese American whose family originally immigrated from Fukushima and raised subsequent generations around the Waipahu plantation that was largely Japanese. Sugar, light soy, ginger, sake. Sweet and light flavors. To me, good eats.“

“Went to celebrate my wife's birthday this past Saturday at Kunis. The last time we went was last year when we celebrated my birthday. I called in the reservation but probably should have made it through Yelp since you can get a free birthday meal. Though it would probably need to be your actual birthday. The day of the dinner they called me to ask me a couple of questions like if we needed a high chair (got my 2 grandkids) and if we were celebrating anything. I told them it was for my wife's birthday, they asked if it was on that day and I honestly said no. Someone near us celebrated a birthday and they turned off the lights and sang happy birthday to her. I'd probably give the rating 4.5 if I could. I knocked off half a star as my Teri steak was cold. It was still ok, but I'm sure it would have been better hot/warm. I did really like the fried akule, that was good. Someone next to us got the family style dinner. They had a stand to place the multiple plates of food. That looked good, maybe next time. They have a fairly large parking lot but it is kind of dark. I'll definitely go back again to celebrate a special occassion.“

“Without a doubt, my very favorite fried noodles anywhere. Here I am back on the mainland reviewing this place because I am still thinking about them. I only found out about Sato's a couple years before they closed for good, so I was only able to eat there a few times during my trips back home. I went a few days before ther closure and had no idea they were closing. It was so sad when they did close. Fast forward to Hashi Okazuya opening in the same spot with what they said was the same fried noodle recipe as Satos. Could it be? Well, for me, the noodles have been just as good as I remember. The noodles have just the right amount of seasoning so you can actually taste the fried noodles themselves. Other places often have way too much salt or too much sweetness that you don't taste the noodles. Also, no kamaboko - which I do not like, so I don't have to pick the little pieces out. I always get a fried chicken with my noodles which is delicious. Nice that it's boneless but still skin on. The hash is pretty good too. The amount of food you get is a deal and the service has always been friendly.“

“I'm an ass, I have been selfishly stalling on this review because I don't want it to be so crowded they turn me away. I really enjoy the homey feels of their food. Even when the man grouchy you cannot taste it in his food it still tastes good. I maybe tried only like 3 things because it's hard to change when you ono for something and that something is so good you scared the next thing going make you wish you had the other thing. Hamburger steak is that thing. I don't know how they make the mochiko chicken so lightly fried almost like tempura. I like that there is a sauce for it. I want to tell you what the worst thing is but I cannot get past the first few things to try everything on the menu ..I want to, but chances are everything is great. This is a take out only -you can blame the pandemic on that. There are a few parking stalls in the building. Follow them on instagram @ethelsgrill_kalihi because they tell you when the hours are. Which is not open Sunday Mondays and when they need a break from a holes like me and sometimes they have tsukemonos, natto thingies, & special made desserts on the days I cannot go. So let me tell you the coolest thing is the actual people of bobs burgers (the show) made a cartoon of Ethel's and it looks just like them as if they stepped out of that cartoon. I ordered a mini garlic chicken plate which comes with rice and Mac salad. I was very surprised when the mini plate I ordered came out in a full size to go box. So much food for the mini plate. The chicken was crispy and flavorful. I ordered spicy so there was definitely a little bit of heat. The Mac salad was so delicious too!My husband got the mochiko chicken mini bento which comes with teriyaki beef, rice, and ume. The tray was packed full with a ton of rice underneath. Both were delicious and still crispy even when we ate them an hour later. We ordered mini versions, but the portions were huge and enough to feed us both for two meals.I highly recommend Sugoi if you're looking for a quick and and delicious and very reasonably price meal.“

“I had very high hopes for this place.A few weeks ago, I stopped by for the first time and got beef curry and gyoza to go. It was spectacular! Decided to go for the ramen next visit. And I did.I wanted to get the thickest, most robust flavored soup, so I got the "Special" tonkotsu black garlic ramen.I really liked the visual presentation. Very vibrant, neat and appetizing. As with most ramen takeouts, the soup and noodles were packaged in separate containers. Before pouring the soup into the ramen bowl, I took a little sip.It was a tad disappointing, as I had such high hopes for this shop. The soup was a bit on the bland side. I guess the fried garlic chips are supposed to carry the flavor but there's nothing else. What I did notice was a slight slimy texture and a hint of odor. This probably indicates that inferior pork bones were used to draw the soup stock. For those of you who don't know how tonkotsu soup is made, ignorance is bliss. If you knew exactly what's in it, you may be traumatized! So, I'll spare you the details. What I will say is that hours of boiling the pork bones is needed to extract the umami, but other ingredients are crucial too. Grated ginger, garlic cloves, salt and pepper are some of the common items that are used. Despite the shortcomings of the tonkotsu soup, I have high hopes that Rakumen could be a top contender in the ramen world if they tweaked their soup just a little bit. Use better quality pork bones would be one. Adding a bit more flavor would be the other. *I had some leftover soup, so I added a little grated ginger and garlic with a few drops of la-yu to it and already, it was about as good as the other ramen shops in town. I give them 4 stars despite the seemingly harsh critique of their tonkotsu, because of their prompt and courteous service. But most of all, I believe that they will only get better.Looking forward to visiting again to up them to 5 stars!“

“Was craving for something Japanese and yet not over priced. Searched Yelp and came across U-Kitchen. Read the reviews and looked at pictures. A lot of good reviews so gave it a try. It's located next to Yohei Sushi on Dillingham. Right now, because of the rail construction, it's a bit pain in the @$$ to get there but it's worth it. It's take out only. So you order and you wait outside. I saw many do phone orders. The staff are very friendly and the shop is clean. We ordered Mechi Katsu, Menchi Katsu Curry, Mushroom Chicken, and Hamburg Steak with Egg. All plates came with some mixed greens and macaroni salad. The macaroni salad was not too much mayo so it was good. The Menchi Katsu was a good size patty and very good. Although, we didn't care for the sauce on the menchi katsu. It was a bit sweet for our taste. Hopefully, next time we can omit it? and just have the regular tonkatsu sauce instead. The curry was okay, just a little on the sweet side for our liking. The hamburg steak was a good size patty with lots of demi sauce. I knew I'm not a fan of demi sauce but wanted to try it anyways. They cover the patty with lots of it. A pretty thick demi sauce. The best plate was the mushroom chicken. the chicken was tender and the gravy was good, not salty at all. I'd come back for the menchi and the mushroom chicken.“

I had dropped my husband off at physical therapy near kuakini and was honestly trying to go to yifang to get boba, when I realized they closed their iwilei location. So I pulled into the jollybee'a parking lot to come up with a plan. There's a s7 icy bubble that I'm not that fond of, but will go to if I'm desperate. And then on yelp I found shiggys. Shiggy is the guy who used to(?) maybe still does (?) stand in the kahala times and make sushi. I remember he made these ume, radish, sprout rolls that I loved, but really couldn't afford because it was like $5 for two little rolls. Anyway, I was pleasantly surprised to find out that he has a little shop in kalihi. They offer things made to order and also offer grab and go things like little bentos and gyoza. If you go near closing, the prepared food is discounted. It's just a little to-go store. There aren't any tables to sit at and eat and it's a little run down. It has character haha. I'd be back for a snack. I hope he can still make those ume rolls. I'd splurge every now and then haha.“

Usually we do take out, but this time we decided to dine in. This location has about 6-7 tables that can accommodate up to 4 individuals with more seat options outside that consist of umbrellas to provide shade. Upon entering, it is necessary to grab a parking ticket to enter the parking lot; but with a purchase from any of the vendors, validation covers 2 hours. The staff is friendly and easily approachable. Whenever there is a question, they are so willing to answer with such great detail. My personal favorite is the Superman roll & Tiger roll. “I've tried this place several times and finally got a chance to write a review. I've always ordered the 2-choice(combination) Teishoku and tried different kinds of items. After every visit, I must say, everything was good! The quality and presentation is top notch. This time, I ordered the Chicken Teriyaki and Mini Chirashi combination. The chicken was excellent. It was soft, and the teriyaki sauce was very flavorful, not overwhelming. The mini Chirashi (which was an extra charge of $4) came with ahi, salmon, shrimp, tako, and ika. Everything was fresh and tasty, especially when slightly dipped in wasabi/shoyu sauce. Tan ordered the combination salmon and spicy ahi. I had a piece of salmon, and it was cooked to perfection. The Spicy Ahi(another extra charge of $3) was also flavorful. It was more on the creamy side than on a chunky side. Both combinations were served with miso soup and a bowl of greens. Hot tea was also included. The only downside of all my visits was that they always ran out of Ahi Tempura. We came in 15 minutes after opening at 5:15 pm, and it was sold out 5 minutes prior. Hot item!! I would have given them a 4 star, but the food quality and customer service were superior. It made up for that star. It was so good we made a salmon takeout order for tomorrows lunch.“

“One of the absolute best tonkatsu spots I've ever been. We went for lunch at noon on a Sunday and only had to wait around 30min for a table. I ordered the ebi and pork filet combo and it came out really quickly. The ebi was super flavorful, and the pork was supremely tender. Both were fried perfectly golden brown. The katsu sauce is a little on the sweet side, but definitely good. I loved the garlic miso dressing so much I bought a bottle to take home. I will absolutely be coming here again!“

“Food is really awesome, so takeout will be fine, but service is severely lacking. There was no checking in on tables happens when its busy i guess? Only seemed to be 2 people working the whole floor, so I get it. However, what made me go 4 stars was thr fact that my friends and i stood at the register to pay for about maybe 8 minutes before being acknowledged or asked to wait even tho we did so patiently. The workers were, however, fighting over something, answering phones and processing other payments from cards that came AFTER we were already waiting at the cash register. They really need to get it together if they want repeat customers dining in.Vegetarian options: Looks like a lot of tofu options. Not sure on availability to omit fish sauce.Parking: Shared area with like 7 other places in close proximity.“

“This spot has been on my list for awhile. Happy I finally made it and with parking right in the front too! I love that the service is quick and you don't feel rushed trying to order. It's right in the residential area so street parking it is. Noticed some neighbors walking over for food, how convenient. Super casual vibes in there, very local style. So many choices like any okazuya place. It's easy for me to get carried away and I wasn't super hungry so I opted for the breakfast bento only $7.25 comes with fried rice, 2 eggs you choice and a choice of breakfast meat (spam, hot dog, or lup cheong). It was perfect. I wish I got the hot dog because I didn't realize it was the shoyu hot dog. I love those! Everything else looked super yum and I'll definitely be back!“

“The hostess was very accommodating and patient while we waited for our entire party to arrive. The cook was not as entertaining and interactive with us as those we've had in the past. We requested our ribeye to be medium rare. What we got was closer to a very medium, so more hard and dry. Comparing this ribeye to a recent lunch we had a week or two ago that was cooked to perfection and a melt in your mouth quality. The meat that we received tonight seemed to be of a lesser quality and overcooked. The lobster tails were very fishy tasting, small and didn't look appetizing. The noodles should be eliminated from the set items. 2 of 5 in our party had a sore stomach after arriving at home. The waitress was attentive making sure our needs were met with refills, etc. It will be a long while before our next visit. Tonight was disappointing.Parking: Lots of parking close to restaurant.“

“There's this person in our office who loves eating here. She goes to pick up and brings back to eat at her desk. So one day, she extended this offer to our office section. Not knowing what to order, we all just took a chance. What did we think?Well, the really funny thing is whatever we ordered that first time has been the same exact thing we have ordered ever since.Isn't that just so amazing? Hahaha :DOne of us likes to order the calamari with three multigrain musubis and the rest of us usually order the butterfish with multigrain rice. The butterfish is so delectable!! Sometimes my work friend orders the chicken bento. What makes these bentos fun to eat for me is not just the flavor and taste but bc of the added yummy tsukemono and food items. For instance, we get a piece of fried chicken, tamago egg (tamagoyaki aka Japanese egg omelette), variety of tsukemono that come with our butterfish bento. And most importantly, all taste really great! If you want a substantial meal with a variety of tastes and you happen to be in the older Kapolei area (by the Kapolei Zippy's and Consolidated Theaters down the long street from Costco Kapolei), this is a great place for a satisfying meal. Now, if you're a guy who tends to eat more, you might need to order a little more for yourself, but for us women, the one bento might be sufficient.“

“We had avoided dining here because of the health department finding them about 5 years ago. OUR LOSS! We tried it and was blown away by the food quality and taste! The restaurant is very clean, and so is the kitchen (visible through a large window behind the cashier). I've had the Japanese teshoku shrimp and the ramen set (tried the white broth which is boiled overnight and so impressed by its taste, that I ordered it again the next time we went there). Both were excellent. They also offerbrown rice which helps my diet restrictions. They are generous with the servings. The service is friendly and professional. It's become our new "go to" restaurant.Dietary restrictions: They offer brown rice.“

“For a place that’s in the top 20 of Yelp Hawaii’s best places to eat, I expected a bit more. For reference, I think that Fresh Catch has better plate lunches.I got the famous crab stuffed ahi and my friend got the kukui ahi belly. The taste of the ahi roll was ok but there was a strong taste of wasabi. The ahi belly definitely could have used the help of a sauce, but the sauce they give you has an even stronger wasabi flavor.Prices are ok for a seafood plate lunch but portion sizes could have been larger.Overall I thought it would have been better if wasabi was served on the side for everything.“

“We found this place on another online platform after going to the Dole Plantation. It is located in a strip mall that looks old and run down so we were skeptical. We located the restaurant in the corner of the lot (next to the Goodwill). We sent a scout in take a look prior lol. The scout gave us the all clear so we entered the restaurant, which was clean and had open tables. We were greeted by a nice man who took the time to get to know us and give us some island history. Ok to the food: There were 4 of us. Each ordered a different entree. 1. Spam hand roll and a tempura hand roll - deliciousness 2. Energy roll- this tasted very fresh and was a roll with eel and avocado on top with eel sauce- deliciousness 3. Ahi poke bento box- came out looking just like the picture on the menu( how many times does that happen!) lots of fresh fish and rolls- deliciousness 4. Tempura shrimp bowl with spicy sauce on top. Tempura shrimp Packed in a bowl on a bed of rice. - deliciousness 5. Spicy ahi poke bowl- came out with tons of fresh ahi covered in spicy mayo and sriracha sauce. - delicious if you like spicy fresh fish. This mom and pop shop deserves your business. The food (all of it) tasted fresh and made with care. I would not write it if it wasn’t true. They will serve you a complimentary miso soup to start ( no spoons here, sip out of cup!) All in all great grub. We will be back!“
