Excellent service, quick delivery of a very tasty Russell burger. Good value!
As you might expect, Champaign-Urbana and the University of Illinois' Campustown have undergone significant and much needed changes since I was a student in 1958-1962 and a sportswriter for the Champaign-Urbana Courier in 1962-1966. On return visits, my wife and I enjoy catching up with the nuances. Like Farren's Pub & Eatery, for example. Located at 117 North Walnut Street in downtown Champaign, at University and Neil, it opened in 2000 and recently was acclaimed the No. 1 burger joint in Illinois by USA Today. Open from 11 to 8 Sunday through Thursday and 11 to 9 on Friday and Saturday, Farren's is as good as advertised. Try the Russell burger with sauteed mushrooms, bacon, blue cheese sauce, pepper jack cheese, lettuce and onion. Or the Motherlode with sauteed mushrooms, blue cheese sauce, Swiss cheese, lettuce and onions. Or ground beef tacos, three tacos served on flour tortillas with lettuce, tomatoes, onions and shredded cheese with sour cream and house-made salsa. Or the cod sandwich, hand-breaded cod loin served with lemon caper aioli on a baguette with lettuce and onion. Start with tortilla chips with salsa, nachos, Buffalo wins with blue cheese dressing, mozzarella cheese sticks, onion rings or fried three-cheese ravioli with house marinara sauce. Salad Caesar with romaine, parmesan, croutons and Caesar dressing or tossed salad with mixed greens, shredded cheese, tomatoes and 1,000 Island dressing. For dessert, we shared frosted spice cake and chocolate lava cake.
Ordered the santa fe chicken sandwich...just awful. The bun was cold. The chicken was dry and flavorless, and the pesto sauce was also really dry and unremarkable. The three components were slapped together carelessly and didnt work well with each other. Felt awful about spending $9 on this.
Farrens is my go-to for grabbing lunch with a new friend. I always get the strawberry salad with chicken, and it never disappoints. It’s perfectly summery. The fried cauliflower is also pretty great. It’s casual enough to not feel like I have to dress up, but the outdoor seating this time of year makes it the perfect “getting to know you” scene, whether it’s lunch or dinner.
I love their buns. They are sweet and large (which are both pluses in my book). Definitely recommend
Great food and very helpful staff. While you have a dedicated server, every server assists with clearing all tables and bringing out food.
Best cheeseburger I ever ate! Great service at a fair price.
Delicious … quick… excellent portions … diet time visitor - will absolutely return
We had the fried chicken sandwiches and they were legit good... not fake good like the Popeye's chicken sando. Service was excellent and their desserts were bomb! Excellent cocktails and locally brewed beers! Enjoyed our date night!
We have heard so many things about Farren's and finally had the chance to eat there yesterday. I enjoy a wide variety of foods, but my partner is more of a burger guy. I knew Farren's is famous for their great burgers. We were greeted warmly and seated and given menus. Mr. Burger guy decides to order BBQ and fries and I had tuna tacos. Everything we had delicious! Staff inquired often about our food and if we needed anything. We had super good service, even though they, like others, are experiencing a staffing shortage. We are thrilled to support a family-owned business, that, like all others in the restaurant/ bar industry has taken a massive hit due to Covid. Since Illinois is just entering Phase 5, it was wonderful to see many people downtown, patronizing these wonderful places. We will return to Farren's soon and we both will have big, beautiful cheeseburgers! I can nearly taste mine already! I highly recommend Farren's!
1st dinner out in 12 months.Chicken Tacos for the win!Lisa had a Russell burger and fries. Enjoyed the people watching.
As usual, the food was great. What was different about this recent visit in June 2021 was we had four different people come to our table, and all four were excellent and as far as we could tell, worked as a team. Excellent service!
I got their Russel burger, the most popular choice, and it was good, but not great. A bit chewy and they forgot the strips of bacon. By the time they were able provide the bacon on a separate plate, the burger had gone cold.
Stopped here while traveling through the area. Local spot serving very good hamburgers and fries. Fries are cut thin, almost shoestring and arrived hot right out of the fryer. Hamburger was fresh with thick patty. Good visit, would definitely stop again if in Champaign.
Really good, their burgers are absolutely amazing. The staff are friendly and the aesthetic is pretty cool. I would definitely recommend this place!
