A local (cow-milk) creamery that I strongly recommend. First, for those from Canada, Wisconsin, or Minnesota, Ludwig Creamery has the freshest and best cheese curds around. If, like me, you believe that it isn't a cheese curd if it is more than 24 hours old, this is the place. They offer tons of excellent cheeses from hard to soft, some you will recognize and some not. All are excellent though, and many have won national awards. The farm-stand sometimes is unmanned but you still can buy. Just enter the shop (which, btw, has windows so you can watch the cheese-making operation), select your items from the refrigerator and leave your money (or check) in the cash box. When manned, don't hesitate to ask questions about how the cheese is produced or, tell them what kind of cheeses you like and they will offer recommendations. The staff there is wonderful in my experience. The cheese is quite reasonably priced in the world of gourmet cheeses, and even in the world of factory cheeses it only is a dollar or two more per pound. Ludwig's owners are particular about treating the cattle well. Pastured as much as they can (unless the pastures are barren in drought, etc.), with no hormones, antibiotics, etc. But, even if that doesn't matter to you, you should try their farmstead cheeses as they are excellent and most are very fresh, though they also offer some quite good aged cheeses as well.Ludwig Farmstead Creamery is one of the lesser known gems of East Central Illinois region and I strongly recommend you give it a try.
