“Kind of a long review, but it’s for 3-4 visits.So, a friend posted a photo of her Italian sub on Instagram, and it looked incredible! I had to try it. Picked up my first Italian sub on 2/10 after ordering online. The young guy at the counter was very nice and handed me my sub. Later, I realized that he had probably made it as well. Drove home and then ate the best Italian sub of my life. I don’t know if they make their own roasted peppers, but they are *chef’s kiss.* Anyway, I got the sub with lettuce, hots, olives, and roasted peppers—they were super generous with the goodies, and at the end I was dipping the last of the bread in the briny, vinegary goodness left on my plate. I couldn’t wait to go back.The second time, 2/22, I went on a random weekday day off. I typically work M-F, but I took a Thursday off. I had a bunch of errands to do that needed to be done during work hours, and I went to the UPS location in Saugus so I could swing by Sons of Sicily and get another sub. Their online ordering was not allowing me to add anything extra to the sub, so I decided to just go in and order it there. (As of yesterday, you still can’t order online and get the option menu of all of the items you can add on) Someone different was on the counter. She seemed to be busy, but she was very nice. I ordered the same exact sub I got last time, and I waited at a table near the back. (I think the “mama” they mention on Instagram was there, as the sweetest lady stopped at my table to make sure I didn’t need anything) The woman at the counter called me over to ask if I wanted any other condiments like vinegar or oil. I think I said oil would be fine since I was planning on putting some oil on it when I got home. She wrapped up the sub, and I drove home to Malden. When I got home, I unwrapped the sub and realized it might not be as good as the first one. It seemed to have much less of the add ons that made the other sub so perfect. I took a bite. It definitely had less, and actually none of the hots that I had ordered. I live far enough away that I really didn’t want to drive back to get my sub fixed, so I ate half of it because I was really hungry, but I had a moment of sadness every time I took a bite. I ended up going to the grocery store to get a jar of hots, roasted peppers, and I found some mixed olives with seasoning on the antipasto bar. The hots I bought was great, but the olives and roasted peppers were subpar to the ones Sons of Sicily puts on their sandwiches.I called Sons of Sicily to let them know about the omission, and to see if I could get a small discount on the next sub I got there. I spoke to the owner who was very nice and said he would take care of my next sub, which was more than I was hoping for, and I was impressed by the customer service.My third sub, 2/24, was through UberEats for two reasons: I could order online through the Uber app with all of the available options, and I really didn’t want to drive to Saugus. I almost never order delivery because of how much more it costs, but that day it seemed worth it. The sub was not as good as the first one, but it was better than the second one by far.Okay, I’m onto my latest visit, 3/2, I called and ordered my sub (same one, same add ons throughout all of this), and I drove over to pick it up. I went in and super awkwardly told the guy at the counter (different one than my first visit) that the owner had said to come talk to him the next time I was in. The owner seemed to be enjoying eating lunch with friends or family, and I felt terrible about disturbing him. He made good on his promise of a free sub, and I tipped the guy at the counter and ran out the door. I got home, and it was finally equally as good as the first sub. I’m writing this and wishing they were open on Sundays because I would seriously drive over and get another one.I highly recommend this place, and I can’t wait to try some of their other items!“

“You really can't go wrong with anything on their menu, but what sets Tony Lena's apart from every other sub shop is their bread: their sub rolls are the softest, freshest, and most delicious you'll ever come across. Add to that fresh meats, veggies and ingredients and you won't eat from any other sub shop again. Their pizza is yummy too, especially the pan style. I can get what is called a Steak Bomb near me but they do not compare to Charlies's in the Manchester NH mall. It's well worth the 25 minute drive passing by all those Steak Bombs on the way.“

You might think subs, but I've done nothing but work my way through all the great "Spanish" items: tacos, burritos, pupusas, empanadas and chicharron, which is like a super-charged bacon. :) Love their tacos al pastor as well! Also "Salvadoran enchiladas", which might be thought of as deluxe tostadas. Small set of tables to dine there if you want, but I've only gotten mine to go.“

“I looked online to see if there was still a Tony Lena's around. I came across Lena's. We ordered an Italian and a ham and cheese. This was exactly what we were looking for. The sandwiches were delicious! Their sub rolls are different from most of the traditional sub shops. Soft bread, fresh meat and veggies. We had a great convo with the woman working while we waited. This will be the ONLY place we will be getting subs from moving forward. We are so delighted we took the drive over to check out Lena's. There is a hardware shop attached and it's adorable. “Was working in the area one day and I saw this place , I was hungry so I figured I would stop in. It turns out this place is a hidden gem disguised as a roast beef shop. The owners are Greek, and being from NY , and a bit of a food snob, I know from experience that Greek restaurant owners make some of the most delicious food you ever taste. “There's a special thing about the highway stretching the length of Saugus, MA. There's food from every chain or stand-alone kitchen you can find and yet one side of the highway has always held my attention more than the other. I've never eaten at a Jersey Mikes before. So my girlfriend and I finally went the other night after I saw a trending Instagram post with a guy explaining how to make the best combo sandwich on the menu and where to substitue for other ingredients or modify "Mike's Way" (several staple toppings). I've heard and tried so many of these posts or Top 10 lists on the best sandwiches in and around Boston. It's nothing new to me and I try not to pass on a chain because of its namesake. So we go in to try it, judge it, and move on with our evening. Unfortunately, things didn't go exactly as planned. The staff knew exactly what I was going for, the influencer sharing the secret sandwich, and even catered some finishing dipping sauces just before we sat down to dine in. The scene was set for a decent meal. So I took my first bite, sat with it for a moment and then looked over at her. We hardly spoke the rest of our meal. I'll leave you here to say that this sandwich has caused some problems for us. We're now struggling to decide which day and routine were breaking to squeeze in a weekly trip to Mike's. Yeah, it was that good.“
