I had really high hopes for this place as a native Californian since they tout themselves as Baja Mexican food. I’ll get the negatives out of the way. The fish tacos and the rice were not what I’d get in California unless it was 4am and I was starving in Barstow or somewhere I wouldn’t want to eat seafood. I recently tried the chips and queso as well as the chips and salsa at Elena’s Taco Shop in Memphis, and I must say, they exceeded my expectations. The chips were perfectly crispy, and the queso was rich and flavorful. The salsa had a delightful mix of fresh ingredients, creating a burst of flavors with every bite. It is a great sign when the first thing you see when entering a Mexican takeout restaurant is a salsa bar. First impressions held up after biting into one of their breakfast burritos--delicious! After spending 10 years in southern California, I have relatively high standards for Mexican food... this place does it right.
