“In recent years, each Easter has wound up taking on a theme based on whatever core activity Mom and I have chosen to participate in. “Casual elegance” and “I trust” certainly summed up this year. It may initially seem like an impossible contradiction, but from the moment you arrive at The Clifton, you find that not only is “casual elegance” is very achievable but that the ability to achieve that balance is core to the venue's charm. It's about finery being presented in a genuinely warm, inviting way. It's like being greeted after a long journey, shown to a cozy library where you can relax and warm yourself by the fire, while being excitedly told "Wait until you see what we have prepared for you today! We really hope you'll like it!" From the moment I saw that The Clifton was hosting a curated 3-course meal, I knew that was my first choice for how to spend the day and glad when that matched the tone Mom was in the mood for as well. That is where "I trust" came into play. I didn't know exactly what we'd be eating but I wasn't the least bit concerned about it. Having already witnessed how exceptional even "burger and fries" produced in Chef Matthew's kitchen was, I knew to trust that whatever was presented before me, I was not going to be disappointed. That trust was once again validated on Sunday. Not only was everything that Mom and I ordered amazing, but it also disproved the notion that "fine dining" means you must leave the table hungry. There is a very logical nature to the menu options in each category. Mom ordered the oysters and shrimp choices ... I ordered the smoked salmon waffles and leg of lamb ... and, in both approaches, the portion sizes were exactly what we wanted. Both of us got exactly what we wanted and got exactly as much food as we wanted overall. The fact this was so easy to achieve is yet another demonstration of Chef Matthew's expertise in achieving a wonderfully balanced experience for a variety of people and appetites.“

Usually at most restaurants there’s at least one thing that isn’t as great when that much is ordered, but that definitely wasn’t our experience! We each tried a bite (or more) of everything that was ordered and we couldn’t have been more impressed! The only downside is the noise level, which unfortunately we contributed to a good bit, but the staff handled our larger party with grace and patience! “We were promptly seated when we entered The Fitzroy at 2:30 and we were given a menu. I was not expecting much when I went in The Fitzroy for my first time. I was expecting less when I looked at their limited lunch menu of chicken wings, pretzel, chicken sandwich, burger, vegetarian sandwich, or a Caesar salad. Leaving did cross my mind more than once as I considered the six basic choices for lunch. Then as I looked around I could painly see I was in a bar and not a restaurant. They had two long bars and one row of booths and tables. I decided on a bar burger, which for whatever reason, they called their Fitzroy Burger. According to their menu description, it was just a regular cheeseburger on a brioche bun. We order a pretzel for an appetizer. It came with a sharp cheddar cheese sauce and mustard dip. The pretzel wasn't anything special. It had a good warm taste but I prefer more salt on my pretzel than this one had on arrival. Our main orders of burgers and wings were served to us as soon as possible. The brioche bun on my Fitzroy Burger had been steamed and was still warm. The hamburger was surprisingly delicious, and so were the fries that came with it. One of our burgers was on ciabatta bread. The ciabatta bread was warm and fresh, and without an upcharge. The side Caesar salad was also tasty. Our waitress was very effiecient and she continued to check on us and refill our water glasses. This was an unexpected pleasant lunch experience for me and the others at my table. I am looking forward to returning for another lunch time experience, when I am in need of a bar burger and fries. I did notice a change in their kitchen staff at 3pm. Maybe this was their shift change time for their kitchen staff.“
