Everyone has gotta have a great chippie in their back pocket. When I saw that VUE Weekly named Prairie Fish 'N' Chips (formerly called Grandin Fish 'N' Chips) as #1 Best Fish & Chips 2018, they were immediately added to my "must try" list. Sadly, the restaurant is going to be shutting down permanently on December 31st (however, they are going to continue on SkipTheDishes) and this absolutely lit a fire under me to give them a try while I still could. Located in Oliver, I love their little corner of the city adjacent to the Alberta Legislature Building. You also can't miss the completely awesome neon sign (in the shape of a fish) shining brightly in their window. Parking can be a bit of a pain but there are usually some meters nearby. I visited on a Thursday evening after making a reservation to ensure my table. The inside of the restaurant is larger than I expected with a decor that captures a wonderfully clear vision. Cobalt blue paint, edison bulbs, rustic wood (like an old, old wooden ship), tons of nautical-themed knickknacks, and the most amazing wallpaper that you've ever seen... The entire atmosphere carries throughout seamlessly. They've done an incredible job bringing what feels like a slice of the Maritimes to landlocked Alberta. Seated by a friendly server, we began to look over their "One Last Catch" menu that features all of their greatest hits at low, "going out of fish" prices. There was a Caesar (Vodka, clamato juice, worcestershire sauce, tabasco, celery salt - $5.00) on the menu that seemed like just the right thing to order as a drink. Caesars are made with clamato juice and staying with the seafood theme at a fish & chips restaurant just makes good sense. This caesar (known as the prairie caesar) packed a spicy punch that I wasn't angry about and was full of all of the delicious tomato and clam flavours that have made the drink so famous. I especially loved the pickled garlicy green bean as a garnish. You just can't go wrong with a good caesar, in my opinion. Once ordered, all of the food arrived at the table quite quickly. They have a Lobster Seafood Roll (Lobster, crab and shrimp, celery, dill pickled onion. Served with fries & coleslaw - $12.00) that I certainly needed to sample! I've had some pretty great lobster rolls in my day and I would even say that they're one of my favourite foods. This one came on a soft and warm bun speckled with poppy and sesame seeds. Fries, coleslaw, and tartar sauce included. I liked the sandwich and thought that the fresh dill and pickled onion on top was a nice touch. However, the seafood itself left a bit to be desired. I'm not sure if there was any lobster in it at all... In fact, I think that it was just shrimp and crab. Which is fine. I like those sea creatures. But if the word "lobster" is used I would hope that I would at least be able to detect it. On the bright side, the seafood mixture did taste good and was pleasantly creamy. The New England clam chowder sounds (and looks) really good, with clams, lobster, crab, shrimp and bacon but unfortunately I didn't get to try it. Next, we tossed on some extras like Coleslaw ($5.00) and Pickle Chips ($5.00). We didn't realize that both of the meals that we ordered would come with coleslaw (there was no explanation of this anywhere) so we ended up with lots of coleslaw. Which isn't a problem! I enjoyed their fresh shredded coleslaw a lot especially because of the abundant use of dill. Great crunch and a nice way to introduce a vegetable into a very "brown" meal. The pickle chips were super fun and crunchy. Ultra crispy fried house pickles with remoulade, these were served piping hot and tasted great dunked into the zingy sauce. Any fan of pickles will love popping these into their mouth. Lastly, of course, there had to be Haddock & Chips (Classic fried, comes with chips, coleslaw, tartar sauce & lemon - $12.00) and we added a piece of fish for $5. A basket of fish & chips

Even though we were here at lunchtime on a Friday we found nearby street parking and a free table inside. Perfect. Friendly staff greeted us and explained the special of the day. We ordered the fish sandwich and the Hadfock and chips. Both servings were very generously sized. First of all, and I'll repeat it at the end, the batter for the fish is the best I've ever had! It clings well, is not greasy, and best of all is super crispy! So crispy in fact, that at first, I thought I'd eaten a mouthful of bones (there are NO bones!) The crunch was so loud and over-powering! And BTW, I'm British and have eaten a lot of British fish and chips and this is absoluty the best batter I've ever had (and I've had Ramsay's fish too!). The chips were good, nothing more, nothing less. I'd prefer a fatter, softer chip myself. The tartar sauce was excellent and the Coleslaw was refreshingly different and excellent excellent tang and despite the high percentage of green cabbage, still had a light taste. Fantastic! We had tea and coffee to drink. Both were good. Service was friendly, attentive and just right the entire time. The decor is fresh and clean and the bathrooms are spotless. What a great restaurant, we wish you well! And keep that crisp, crunchy batter frying!!

Excellent fish and chips!! Having grown up on "fish suppers" in Scotland I appreciate the care and attention that's put into their dishes. Batter is crispy and delicious, but thin enough that you still taste and enjoy the fresh fish. Chips (fries) are perfectly cooked, and the gravy is very good. Love the (house made) tartar sauce and coleslaw. Potato salad is excellent (with jalapeños!), as are the Brussel sprouts and Beet salad. I'm cheap, otherwise I'd give them 5 stars.

We had the Haddock and Chips and it was a great meal. Fish was to die for with the light batter chips were very tasty and nice coleslaw. Tartar Sauce was to die for. We hadn't gone for a couple of years but with defineatley return. Sweet friendly staff Give them a try and support local!!

Nice first experience here! My husband and I had the haddock & chips (he got the poutine). The fish was well cooked (although I prefer a slightly crispier batter myself), tasty tartar sauce, the fries were alright for me but one unexpected item that shone through for us was the side of coleslaw. My husband usually doesn’t like coleslaw and he ate all of his and I wish i had a bit more served with the dish! Service was good. Nice environment. Large portion for the price.

Just looking for some good fish. Ordered fish & chips and fish tacos. Both were delicious, light batter and good portions. Sat outside on a sunny afternoon. Tried two different local draught beers. Yummy as well. Good friendly service. We'll be back again to try some of the other options .

This is our favourite place for fish and chips! The fish is crispy yet still taste meaty. We ordered haddock and sole and both are just delicious!

Great place. Lots of seaside decor and friendly staff. Patio was terrible for noise pollution being beside a main road but food was delicious. Had the lobster roll and it was yummy and fulfilling despite it's size. I had the Birthday cake and tasted as if it came out of the freezer. Public wifi available. Bathroom had some great decor.

Outstanding! They offer gluten free/celiac friendly here. Service was great. Flavour was great. I attended during a heat wave and the restaurant had no AC but the atmosphere, cider, and tunes greatly compensated for it ? I had such a good time.

The food was good but far from great. However the service was above average! Me and 5 of my boys ordered the haddock and chips for $20 Ish a piece and we all agreed that the fish was fresh and of good quality but the batter was noticeably thin and under seasoned, the coleslaw was awesome, the fries were average, and the tarter sauce was decent. We all came to the conclusion our meal quality and portion size was just not worth the price. These guys definitely aren’t the best in the city but they are far from being the worst!
