Gone down hill from what I remember. There was hardly any meat and cheese on my super Sicilian- not sure even all the ingredients were on there. The meatballs tasted pre made. It seemed like they were really rationing the meat, on the counter there were many pieces of parchment paper with partial slices of meat and cheese. Won’t be returning until the reviews change, seems like this is the new norm.

The place exudes serious nostalgia. From the wood-laden decor to the 80’s rock playing in the background. There is even a black-and-white tintype photo of the “founder” hanging above the counter. The servers are super friendly and glad to see you.The day I was there they were very busy but they consistently checked in with me to update me on the progress of order. They had lots of locals coming in picking up big orders. They were working hard! The sandwich was huge. It was not packed to over over-flowing with meat but well balanced over the expansiveness of the large roll. Every bite was yummy. Some have said the bread is burned. Mine was appropriately toasted. The potato salad was savory and tangy.I would go back there to step again into a more simpler time when restaurants cared about taking care of their customers and providing high quality food at reasonable prices.

LOVE LOVE LOVEAbsolutely recommend to anyone in the downtown Phoenix area! Me and my family have been coming here for over 45 years! It’s a Phx MUST have. Thank you Mcgurkees,, you never seize to surprise me #blessed
Ordered a Turkey sandwich ? and they delivered their special "J P McGurkee Burnt McTurkey" this bread is blackened. Are all the sandwiches like this? Also the sandwich itself is bland and uninspired. I expected more McGurkee.

Maybe I just came on a bad day. But I ordered a French dip and all it had was meat and burnt bread. No cheese, no horseradish mayo. It was relatively busy so I went to sit out back and instead of bringing me the sandwich the lady came to the back to tell me the sandwich was ready… then proceeded to leaded me to the front so I could pick up the sandwich. (I was eating at the restaurant). They took quite a while to take my order, although it was 1pm so I know it is super busy. The male worker was very kind and efficient. I was really excited to try this place but ended up throwing the sub out. Very unfortunate. Hopefully it was just an off day. Oh but the potato salad was good!

WARNING: the onion roll is considerably smaller than the rest of their bread options, however it is the same price for the sandwich, which is $14 and the difference in amount of meat between the two was huge lol. that’s ridiculous. you get maybe 4 bites off the onion roll compared to 10+ on the sub rolls. very deceptive in my opinion.
