I don’t even know where to begin with this review. I don’t write reviews but I have to from the experience my friend and I had.. Martin must be going through something terrible in life for him to treat patrons like he does. I honestly feel bad for that man to be the miserable human he is. He was super rude to my friend and I. It was such an uncomfortable situation we got up and walked out. Lucky he’s a senior citizen cuz I woulda popped off on him and matched his attitude X1000, but I respect my elders. Y’all better do yourself a favor and go to BOCA on fourth where you will be treated kindly and the food is amazing. Maria the owner is the best! No wonder why her restaurant is packed and Martin’s is lucky to have the few little loyal customers he has… praying for this man and his staff…

I do not understand how this restaurant has not gone out of business with (Martin) the owner/chef running it. This was my first time here so once I received the menu, I got excited once I saw the calabacitas option because that was something my family made for me all the time and I was excited to see how it would taste here. Martin comes up asking if I was ready to order and I told him “I’ll order the calabacitas” He then replied “and what..? It has to come with another ingredient, it has more to it..” in a rude and impatient tone. I was confused then because I thought the calabacitas were just the veggies alone. It didn’t say on the menu that I needed to add anything to it. I told him “I am just confused on how I am supposed to order it if I just want the calabacitas by itself.” He then started saying “this isn’t chipotle, it is authentic Mexican food.” I decided to order another option because I was already getting anxiety because I was not understanding why he was getting upset about me not knowing how his menu works. I then said “instead of the calabacitas I’ll just get the carne asada tostadas” because I was assuming and hoping I couldn’t go wrong ordering that to prevent the man from getting more upset and rude with me. He then said I was indecisive in a rude tone and walked away. I felt so uncomfortable and upset. At the end of me eating he said “I guess this is the time I should apologize,” after he noticed me ignoring him when he asked “how the food was” but yet he didn’t apologize. He then went on to banter about how authentic his food, etc. He is so condescending and rude. Never again! The food was okay but not good enough to go through that disrespect from the owner. Unbelievable! Honestly, I have never experienced anything like that before from an owner of a restaurant. I would seriously recommend going somewhere else for “authentic mexican food.”

We’ve been here several times and I can say with confidence this is one of the best restaurants in Arizona. Martin is an absolute character and these carnitas tacos on blue corn tortillas are absolutely incredible. 12/10

Rude manager, he was weird and whatever-like and food was mediocre, I seriously dont see or understand the reputation of this place. If you want something thats actually good with great service id choose anything else other than this place.

First of all, take a look at the one-star reviews. If you have a delicate sensibility, or you are in search of a cordial dining experience, this might not be the choice for you. This place is less like going to a formal restaurant, and more like going to a familiar friend's place for dinner. Once you realize that, go with it, have a good time, dig the funky atmosphere, be treated like someone who's eaten there for years and enjoy the excellent food. My wife and I were in search of good mexican while visiting Tucson, partiularly a mole dish. She can search Yelp and find the perfect place with ease. She found Martin's, and we checked it out. Lots of funky paintings, some with Martin's signature in the corner. We asked him if he was the artist. "Depends... do you like them?" Ha! The mole was perfect! Just the right amount of spice, not too much chocolate. Everything else was superb as well. Not your typical cookie-cutter Mexican. Lots of of interesting touches, all very tasty. Let your guard down, come hungry, love this place.

This guy was a real piece of...work... Rude, not family friendly and not welcoming. After mistreating his employee the owner (I assume) proceeded to accost me and my partner. thankfully there are so many more options in walking distance.

I only have, perhaps, one valid criticism. The Chicken mole. The mole, although earthy, missed the traditional marker of sweet richness. An almost burnt flavor came through (typical of improper cooking temp or over-charring). Could be an intentional decision, could have just been that night, and I would be willing to overlook this seemingly small inconsistency IF it weren't for the owner. And I feel that's where most of the negative reviews stem from.Martin passed off his Chicken Mole proudly with confidence, even commenting that it would remind me of "tu abuela". Martin, it did not.I have mixed feelings because I truly do feel that all the 5-star reviews come from a genuinely pleasant experience. Although my visit was not *unpleasant*, like any critical review, I have my faults. And to speak on some of the stronger worded, negative reviews, I'll leave the reader with this... have your food, back up your personality. But what do I know.

We stopped at a place down the street, it had a 30 minute wait time, so we left and wandered into Comida Chingona. The place is quite a scene, so we were surprised to have a great meal at a reasonable price and would definitely return. That said, the comments on other reviews about Martin are accurate. At first I couldn't figure the guy out...like when I asked the prices (not printed on the menu) he seemed to take offense and (I guess) insulted me...like I said above, I wasn't sure exactly what he was saying. But we got past that and I figure he's just pretty unfiltered...he said he's been doing the restaurant thing for years and maybe he's just developed a short fuse. Anyway I just came back at him and he settled down (a bit!) and brought us our food. As above, it was just great. And as mentioned by others, no beer or wine service...bring your own or buy it across the street. So...if you're looking for a quiet peaceful meal, this may not be the place. If you don't mind some back and forth with the owner and excellent food, you'll be happy.

This is a fun place to eat. The food is amazing, with beans harvested by his family to the authentic horchata. I was impressed. I also dug the atmosphere. One of the best Mexican food places in town.

I can't comment on the food because we never made it that far. The "customer service" of the owner is hostile, rude, and completely turned us away. The place looked interesting from the street, but while telling us about the wait time to be seated (as he gestured to two empty tables), for some reason the owner decided to comment on how we were dressed. He said we could come back in 20 minutes and he would remember us, "Because people here don't dress like that. We don't wear that type of hat or coat." While pointing. Very strange. My friend and I were confused about whether the guy was trying to be funny, but it was definitely a weirdly aggressive exchange for absolutely no reason. I've honestly never had that type of experience from front of house staff. It went from "oh cool" to "never again" in under a minute. Tucson is such an amazing food town that I can't imagine any reason to visit this place. Save yourself the trouble and support another local business.
