Like so many places in Canada, we have learned to accept untained service staff. Since Covid, managers are doing the best they can with the staff they have. Our waitress didn't know the specials or what was on tap and didn't acknowledge us as we were leaving. Maybe hospitality will never get back to where it once was. The food was what we expected after reading other reviews and the space has so much unrealized potential.
We were visiting Nanaimo and doing the Nanaimo Bar Trail. We’d heard The Modern Cafe did Nanaimo Bar Martinis so we ducked into this place. We were not disappointed! Amazing (sugary) twist on an espresso martini, super friendly staff and an amazing atmosphere. The cafe also does a Nanaimo Bar cheesecake… defo worth a visit!

For any previous regulars you should know Modern is now under new ownership. Sadly the food quality was not to the previous standard. Right away from new menu design could sense something was different!The French fries were tiny little things, salad was a bit weak mostly greens with under seasoned salad dressing. Just don’t expect the same quality. Service staff were all new and doing their best given the changes. Wish them all the best!
