Went in for my first time today after checking out their menu online. Dave, the owner, was so nice and welcoming and suggested the Smokey Joe and his fresh Bacon Potato Cheddar soup. Everything was sooo yummy!! The spicy BBQ sauce has just the right amount of heat and the soup was delicious and comforting! Definitely my go-to sandwich & soup spot from now on. Thank you Dave!

I graduated from Chico State in 2000. I’ve never lived there since but anytime I pass through town, I always stop for a sandwich because I feel like it’s been a great place. I stopped there two weeks ago and ordered my usual favorite sandwich and a cup of soup. The sandwich was so disappointing. The bread was awful. Dry, crumbling, no flavor or texture.( It was supposed to be a sourdough roll. ) What happened to the quality? The toppings weren’t what they used to be. I didn’t end up eating it. The Cheesy Broccoli soup was thick ( seems like they used too much cornstarch) and again, lacking flavor. It makes me so sad to write this as I’ve always considered Kona’s as one of my favorite sandwich places. I hope the owner takes this and previous reviews to heart, rather than becoming defensive.

I'm writing this as a response to the owner as yelp does not let me respond to my original review. 1. Yes, on Doordash the description for the sourdough bread says it is firm and slightly dense but it is VERY dense, very dry, heavy, and crumbled to pieces. 2. On my special instructions i wrote (which i can see that i wrote because I can see my past orders on the app): "extra mayo please. extra on the toppings." (notice how i put both phrases on 2 separate lines like I did when I ordered) I did NOT write "extra mayo on the toppings." but yet received zero mayo on my sandwich which i did submit pictures of that to doordash and brings me to my next point. 4. In regards to the refund from DD, because i submitted the pictures to them that there was absolutely zero mayonnaise on my sandwich & extremely minimal toppings, they did give me a $3.99 credit. Do i consider that a refund? Not really as I spent over $17 on the sandwich which was a huge disappointment.

Ordered from them today for lunch, hubby and I ordered full sandwiches and what we got was one half of the sandwiches had everything while the other was plain bread. The half that was made was just a mess, condiments all over it and meat and toppings just thrown on it. It was just a huge mess. while the other half completely untouched.We were still like whatever we'll just make the other side and enjoy our food but the bread was terrible, it was beyond dry and tastes stale
