Server was awesome, atmosphere quirky and appropriate to Encinitas. Portions were generous but not to our liking. Sister-in-law left her omelet and potatoes largely untouched --neither of us cared for the texture or flavor of the home fries. Chicken fried steak was passable and fried potatoes patties tasty but the sourdough bread was meh and the salsa side tasted as though from a jar. Sausage gravy had chunks of sausage link instead of ground sausage which is the usual offering. Wife and I both had stomach discomfort about 4 hours later--not recommended and we won't be back.

Potato Shack is a favorite of our kids because of their gigantic pancakes. Lots of fun. Otherwise the food is OK. The eggs are consistently overcooked (I know that’s a matter of taste, but it’s all scrambled hard) and everything else of ok. Lovely “veteran forward” atmosphere and a longstanding local fave. If gigantic pancakes are your thing, go. If not, there are better made breakfasts to be had within a 5 min drive.

Amazing breakfast spot that has been in business for ages. The pancakes are gigantic, the chicken fried steak is delicious, and the gravy is top notch. I’ll be back soon!

Close to the beach, awesome food, manhole cover sized pancakes. A must eat anytime you are in the area! Cash only, they do have an ATM on

Potato Shack is an important part of our breakfast spot rotation! We always can count on good food and even better service. They don’t make them like this anymore!
Giant pancakes. Taste is ok, but they were stiff. It is hard to make great giant pancakes and these were just a touch off. Good service.

Yummy food and huge portions. They only take cash or Venmo but do have an ATM in the restaurant. My husband has been coming here since he was a teen and now we get to bring our children. It's also dog friendly on the patio. We will be back again!

We sat outside and enjoyed the sunshine with our breakfast, Food was good. Eggs, potatoes, country fried steak, potato patties, biscuits and gravy, eggs Benedict, it was all good! Service is good too. We have been coming here for close to 20 years and I think the same guy owns it. It's still cash only, but you can pay with venmo now as an alternative. Don't forget the salsa. I find myself ordering specifically so I can eat more salsa. Those potato patties are the best. Still a great place for breakfast after all these years.Parking: Free parking lot across the street, just south of the restaurant.
