I've been to the Long Beach Blvd. location, however, this is my first time here at the Bixby Knolls location. The inside of the restaurant makes you feel like you are in New Orleans. Nothing fancy, clean vibe. Sal's is known for their Gumbo, but they do have other good soul food selections on the menu. I ordered the Fried Chicken Plate 3 pieces and it comes with 2 side dishes of your choice and cornbread. I went with Red Beans and Rice and Candied Yams. My friend ordered the Catfish Dinner Plate with Mac and Cheese and Fried Okra. Everything is made to order, be prepared to wait. Good food takes time. The fried chicken was lightly battered, and crispy on the outside but very moist and had good flavor but a bit salty to my taste. The red beans and rice were excellent. The candied yams were good but a bit sweet. My friend Catfish Plate was just average. The catfish filet was too small, more like nuggets but fried well. I love the Mac and Cheese, creamy and cheesy. The fried okra was just average. I wish they give free refills on lemonade and iced tea. The service was excellent. Very welcoming and friendly and had great updates while we were waiting. Will come back again.

Having tried authentic Cajun food from Louisiana I decided to try this location for the first time. A new local spot in the Bixby area, slow paced and calm environment. We sat in for this meal, simple dine and dash style type of place, nothing fancy. We ordered the Gumbo and Jambalaya, toasted bread and some beverages. The Gumbo was tasty but a bit watery, not the Louisiana style I've had but very close to it flavor wise. Would like to see more legs on those crabs. lol. The jambalaya was very good, shrimp, chicken and sausage came together with the right amount of spice but I didn't see any beans.. hmm. The service was great. Maria was very attentive and cooked everything on the spot. Overall this was a decent place to try some Cajun food not local to this area. Will be coming back to try some po boys!

Such tasty gumbo. I came for the gumbo and it didn't disappoint. Giant meaty crab leg in my serving.. tender ingredients, very generous.. not too much rice.. subtle yet deep flavors. Extremely comforting without being heavy.

I called Sals on LB blvd on 4/2/24 when I was 2min away pulling up literally making my order. The owner Sally's tells me 20 minutes I'm like geesh ok. I pulled up seen two people waiting to get there food, so I waited my time because I was already parked outside by the time we finished taking my order. I decided to go inside because I'm 5month expecting so I needed to use the restroom, I asked Sally was the restroom opened she said yes it should be, once I get to the restroom she's coming from the kitchen to Unlock the restroom door from the kitchen side, washed my hands No paper towels, had to use my Dress to open the door with my wet hands, get to the counter to pay for my food, Lemonade already prepared with ice watering the lemonade down I get my food go to my car, fries are cold like they've sat longer than 20 minutes burger, warm, I called back inside to them know, her assistant was nice and helpful told me to come back inside they'll give me fries, soon I walked in the door, Sally started going THEE HELL OFF, saying " That's why we don't like to make food until yall here waiting to pick it up" I'm like excuse me who are talking too, you told me a time and I timed as i should, Sally opened my plate with her bare green fingernails hands, touched my fries next to my burger, after she just finished taking a phone order on register. We went back nd forth until she was like you want your money back, I'm like sure, literally messed up my appetite all day, Sally the owner really disappointed me. Never received this service from here, until this time. Need to be more professional & curiosity about your customer service and approach. It literally wasn't called for while other customers were in the restaurant.

You have officially found the Queen of Gumbo!!! I know you've been looking, I was too. If you've landed here, someone up above loves you. Everything on the menu is the truth, and yes, this is that real southern gumbo! We order pots every Christmas! Make sure you say hi to Sal, the hardest working gal you can find in a Soul Food Kitchen!

When folks ask me where do I go for gumbo in New Orleans...I respond my cousins house. The gumbo at Sal's is the gumbo I am familiar with! This Belizean chef is on point! Jambalaya PERFECT! Dry, spicy, plenty of sausage and shrimp. Her island goodness well represented with oxtails... best in LA! Looking forward to tasting the rest of the menu!

They shouldn’t have to post a sign at the register explaining why the pricing has changed.. absolutely due to inflation ! If grocery stores & gas stations don’t care we should never question our own.. support black businesses especially when the food & service is great! The staff at both locations are helpful & professional..See you guys soon and I want my turkey again for thanksgiving it always a fam favorite! Thank you all at Sal’s Gumbo Shack

Sals is the real deal cajun and southern food. Jambalaya, gumbo, catfish, fried chicken. All the right sides, greens ( perfect tang ) , rice and gravy, red beans and rice, mac and cheese, corn bread. And many other great entrees. Never had a bad meal yet. Favorites are the f jambalaya ( nicely spicey) and the fried catfish dinner ( enough for two people to split).

This was my first time at this Bixby Knolls location. The inside and outside were clean and made me feel like I was in New Orleans. There are ALOT of items on the menu, not just gumbo. We ordered a medium gumbo to share. The rice is served in the same container. The flavor is truly authentic, one of the best in Southern California. Ky greeted us and took our order. Our food didn't take long to arrive. If you want good gumbo, give them a try.

I normally don't do reviews. I drove to my neighbor city of Long Beach ...I was dissatisfied 100%.The Gumbo tasted like scorched Campbell soup with absolutely no gumbo roux taste .And the nerve to put one struggle crab the size of a cigarette . $28 I was charged for a large the size of a coffee cup that was super bland ‍ SMH was not worth it . I cook gumbo and I would be embarrassed to serve this to the public ( see my gumbo my pictures full of flavor and sufficient size crabs, andouille sausage and shrimp) The Rex Po boy was super salty with no true flavor the salt overpowered all I couldn't taste catfish only salty battered shrimp .The beans were ok the 2 tablespoons on top of the rice .Must do better on the gumbo roux. Hopefully they do better in the future .
