Authentic Jamaican food in an excellent location. It's pretty chaotic and loud inside, but they have some neat outdoor seating.

Stepping into Wah Gwaan Jamaican Kitchen & Bar is akin to a direct portal to the heart of Kingston, where the vibrant spirit of Jamaica comes alive through its culinary delights. On my recent visit, the establishment not only captivated me with its ambiance but left an indelible mark through its gastronomic offerings, particularly the jerk chicken plate and the pineapple upside-down cake. The jerk chicken plate was a masterclass in balance and flavor. The chicken itself, succulent and tender to the fork, was adorned with a spice blend that spoke of generations of culinary heritage. This wasn't just heat for the sake of heat; it was a thoughtful composition of spices that danced on the palate, invoking a smile with each bite. The smokiness, a hallmark of authentic jerk cuisine, was present and perfectly paired with the subtle char of the grill. Accompaniments on the plate complemented the chicken beautifully, creating a harmonious blend of tastes and textures that transported me straight to the island's vibrant beaches and bustling streets.Dessert was a delightful journey with the pineapple upside-down cake. This dish was a testament to the chef's prowess in transforming simple ingredients into a dessert that was both comforting and sophisticated. The cake was moist, with the pineapple lending a sweet, tangy counterpoint to the caramelized sugar. It was a brilliant close to the meal, encapsulating the essence of Jamaican warmth and hospitality.Wah Gwaan Jamaican Kitchen & Bar excels not only in its culinary creations but in its ability to create an experience that feels both authentic and welcoming. The staff's attentiveness and the kitchen's dedication to authentic Jamaican flavors make it a must-visit for anyone seeking to indulge in the rich tapestry of Caribbean cuisine. As a food critic who has traversed many culinary landscapes, Wah Gwaan stands out as a beacon of Jamaican gastronomy, inviting one and all to revel in its flavors, one delicious bite at a time.

If I judge by flavor alone this place is above and beyond. Online menu did not reflect in person menu but what I did order was completely authentic to Jamaica.

Visited yesterday with 2 friends for lunch based on a recommendation of a friend who is from LA. Walking up, you can smell and see their grill in the back and it’s comforting to know they’re authentically grilling their chicken.I ordered the Large plate with curry chicken and oxtail with the intent to have some for later. One friend ordered the large oxtail plate and the other ordered the small/medium jerked chicken. The oxtail were well flavored and tender. Loved my curry chicken. The portions were huge. I ate off my plate in 3 servings. The rice was good but a little more moist/gummy than I’m used to (which I could tell from the cooking pan) with Jamaican food but with oxtail gravy over it, it was perfect. The cabbage was complimentary solid side. Great plantains!!! I also ordered two patties to try. The jerk chicken was okay, but the beef patty perfect! I like spice! My friend said her jerked chicken was great and she loved the rice. We also liked the little cornbread roll (don’t know what it’s called). And her smaller plate still had leftovers too.Oh, and we each ordered the ginger pineapple juice. I expected it to be less sweet. We all agreed that it was very sweet and concentrated. You could definitely taste the ginger though, which I loved. It almost seems like it has mango juice in it or perhaps some kind of artificial pineapple juice. Still good nonetheless. I added water to mine and it was perfect. The owner (Sadie, I believe) was warm and kind. They have the food laid out behind a glass so you can see the food. They prepare the plates and hand it to you. It’s small inside with bar style, high chairs.Outside is nice for seating. Very small seats however. I just propped my foot on the table base to secure myself and was fine. It’s hard to find good Jamaican food being that I live in Pasadena, so I’m glad to have found this place and it was good! I’ll definitely be revisiting soon.

JERK CHICKEN QUEST: A SIMPLE JOY, SEEN?Jamaican cuisine is an exhilarating adventure for the palate, embodying a fusion of flavors that is as spirited and lively. Fi be straight with yuh, mi a talk mostly 'bout di jerk chicken and wid rice and beans.I arrived on a busy Friday night.  Then I realized my wait time was 15 minutes longer because my chicken was on da grill gettin' proper. Yaaas. Fresh jerk chicken, no burner, no heat lamp. And I passed the grill on my way into the eatery. I am only a white meat chicken eater.  It was smoky, seasoned, and moist. The chicken did not require the sauce. But I ain't no fool.  Ooooohh wee! Fire and flavor. It was a different approach to the bold and hearty jerk chicken I have experienced. The coconut rice and milk, nuh stand out crazy, but it memorable fi di balance a flavor. Me, myself,  and I prefer jasmine rice which is how I make mine but the balance of flavors stuck with me. Although I can't prove it, I think the beans are doctored up can.  Fi eat yah here so more than food;  it a whole vibe. Music, people watching, and all 'bout community.THUMBS UP?The plate combo comes with vegetables and two plantains.?Yes, it is a safe environment?Indoor and outdoor patio seating?Accepts all forms of payment?Disability friendlyTHUMBS DOWN-Dey charge ya fuh everyting-Parking lot is a conundrumLike this review if you like my Jamaican twang, lol."'Talk and taste your tongue."-Jamaican quote#juken123#jamaicanfoodLA#wahgwaanjamaican
