edited to clarify that this is a review for the OLD location —- I genuinely hate trying new places to eat ? so take this review with a grain of salt. I either really love a place or hate it- somehow this fell right in the middle which is rare. Upon first entry it was hot- it was cooler than outside but it still wasn’t comfortable, and it was only 9am. Also the tables are covered in ads- like I get it it helps get local businesses get customers but it’s just unnerving to have random people smiling up at you while you eat LOL. Our servers were nice and answered any questions I had about items My husband got the chicken fried steak and hash browns- I tried a bite and it kind of just tasted like a giant chicken nugget covered in white gravy. But it wasn’t horrible I got the Country Benedict. Biscuit was really good, not like a normal biscuit, and I think they may grill them too before serving. The sausage was just a bland frozen sausage the egg was fine. My main problem lies with the gravy. It’s just so bland and flavorless- I get that it’s just white gravy but add some smoked paprika or garlic powder or something lol. Even adding salt just made it salty and bland ? Also I think they butter their toast and biscuits with margarine not butter- so if that flavor profile matters to you be advised lol. But I didn’t hate it- I’d go again and try something else. Just wasn’t super impressed

Used to be a great place for breakfast and lunch. Real popular. The parking lot was always full. They have sold, and the restaurant is not faring as well under the new owners. Meal quality has slightly diminished and the portions have really suffered. Because I liked the old Paul's so well, I will give it another chance later to see if they have corrected the downslide.

Great for late nite casual. Fantastic for breakfast. If your hungry the portions are good sized.

I wish I could give zero stars but I can't. I ordered biscuits and gravy to go and a few other Meals. They packet to where it is spilling. Also the biscuits and gravy was watery and cold. Just threw it in the garbage nobody likes

Nice menu. Awesome quick, attentive and very friendly service. Coffee always full. My green tea came with a full cup plus full tea pot. I love never having to ask for more hot water. Not fancy. It's your typical hometown diner feel. The food was hot, fresh and very delicious.Husband had the meat lovers omelet. As promised, it was very full of meats. Biscuit was big, homemade, and very fluffy. My vege omelette without cheese was the best I've had in a long time.Vegetarian options: The vege omelette was spectacular. Packed full of veggies that were done perfectly.Lovely buttery taste. The home fry potatoes are sautéed with peppers and onions. My favorite! Potatoes done perfectly.

Food is always good, especially breakfast. Can't wait til they move to Yosemite Crossings across from Raley's to give the atmosphere a face lift. Service is always excellent!

Paul's Place is definitely one of Merced's staple locations. The food is good and big, American-diner-sized portions. The desserts are also great. Also reasonably priced and the staff is very friendly. I love the atmosphere: free newspapers available for reading, memorials to veterans in the entrance, and lots of local history mounted up on the walls inside.
Customer service is alright.. our server came up to us after several minutes and said "you guys ready". She seemed annoyed and just not happy.. bummer cause I'm a generous tipper when it comes to good service. I'm a server myself and yes I get that it's busy and nonstop work.. but at least smile or introduce yourself. Also, if customers say "thank you" then say "you're welcome". Cant stand when I am constantly saying thank you and the server always walks away saying nothing. Doesn't really make me feel like a welcome guest. Otherwise, food isn't bad and it's a good atmosphere.

This has been a solid diner in Merced for a long time. They are moving to a new location (where Starbucks moved to, across from Raley's).Food was good. Plenty of seating available.

Good to see that the food at Paul's place is the same if not a little better than when I was a kid, keep that classic chow hot!!
