This place is tucked into a small plaza right next to the Courtyard Marriott hotel. We went here twice in three days. We were a little skeptical at first because of the review but the food is superb and is traditional spicy Hunan cuisine. If it matters to you - no MSG used in the dishes, you can tell. We had stir fried cauliflower, diced frog, pickled green beans with minced pork, stewed red chili tofu, all were tremendous. Portions are good and not stingy.

I am from hunan, this place is definitely authentic Chinese hunan food. I live in San Francisco, but have to come here to order my favorite dishes every time when I visit in LA for the past 10 years. If you want try authentic hunan food, this is definitely the right place. If you are not used to spicy food, ask chef to make it less spicy. Highly recommend!!!

Pretty authentic Hunan Chinese restaurant. Smoked pork dishes taste just like the ones in Hunan. The cauliflower dish was also spicy and flavorful. The fresh ingredients really made a difference in taste and crispness in the veggies. Even better would be Hunan Chili KingParking: Free parking

loved their spicy steam fish 辣蒸魚. been visiting the RH restaurant for years and this is the first time after pandemic and found out they closed the RH store. still good fish though. owner is very friendly and taught me how to reheat the fish once I get home. restaurant itself is tiny, never eaten there before, but definitely will come back for the fish.

The review is for their food only. This is not your typical Chinese restaurant. Many reviewers used the word Authentic, but to me, it's more like Traditional dishes from the Hunan region. Spicy, flavorful, oily, and satisfying, the kind of food reminds me of China. Maybe it's not the most healthy, clean, fancy place, but considering so much has changed in China and this world, I hope the food never changes. I will be back as long they don't change the taste of their food.

I have been eating at this restaurant for well over 20 years, and it still remains my favorite "authentic" Hunan restaurant in Los Angeles. First, I use the word "authentic" sparingly, because I feel like the word is becoming more and more subjective these days. However, for this restaurant, I can only say that it is authentic in closeness to eating in Hunan China. To start, many people don't understand "authentic" Chinese food, and when they order the real deal, they sort of don't understand or aren't accustomed to the new flavor profiles. Like for example, if you've never had "Sweet Chicken" which translates to frog meat, then it's almost going to be immediately off-putting to most. Hunan food can also be off-putting to people who (to borrow a quote from comedian Nigel Ng's persona of Uncle Roger), "don't like flavor". What I mean by this is that Hunan cooking comes with a lot of chili peppers and naturally, it will come with a lot of chili oil. I've heard and seen people complain about the amount of "grease and oil", but if you're really looking for most authentic Chinese food, it's going to be somewhat greasy. Think about Chris Tucker in Rush Hour, when they were in Chinatown and Jackie Chan got him "Eel", and Tucker replied with "eating from a box of grease", but turns out Tucker liked the food. About the quality of some of the food. Personally, I've never had an issue with the quality of fish orders. For anyone not in the know, most fish are going to be frozen, unless you have a big enough restaurant to have the resource to spend on a fish tank. People like to complain about how the fish head they service isn't fresh, to which I'll have to say, all fish head arrive frozen upon delivery. Simply just have to adjust expectations for reality. To that note, it's also an authentic Chinese dish, that not many people order, simply to just keep it in stock is a burden on space. But for passion's sake, they continue to carry it, while to keep themselves open cut many items off the menu during COVID. Lastly, coming to this restaurant, you need to come with an open-mind about the food. It's not going to be your typical: orange chicken, beef and broccoli, walnut shrimp dishes. This isn't Chinese-American fast food. As for authenticity, this is like coming to your Chinese aunt's place for dinner. If you're not afraid of flavor, spiciness, and real authentic Hunan food, this is your spot - and I hope you'll come and keep this restaurant up and running for another decade or more. If you're flimsy, and squeamish about grease and oil, perhaps you should look else where or stick to Panda Express. Hunan restaurant accepts CASH only, and Zelle transfers.

The restaurant is a little smelly. Food is salty and greasy. We only ate the veggie and left 3 plates of meat with a lot oil.

Okay... the food has gone down over the years. This place has been my husband go-to place for hunan chilli fish. It is really run down, hole-in-the-wall, restaurant but it makes up for their above par authentic hunan food. However, the past couple of times, their dishes are lacking in the right flavor. Maybe they change chef??
