If you happen to be at Fashion Island, it is a good place to eat. But I would definitely would not go out of my way to go there. The food choices are limited and ordinary.

booked a reservation on a busy night yet the service was still excellent! I asked for tartar sauce and spicy mayo and they delivered!! The french fries were so crispy, which I like. I ordered the chicken meatballs and spaghetti and it was delectable. My dad ordered the steak and asked for medium well but it was medium. However they had no problem of recooking the steak for him. Definitely bringing my family back!!Vegetarian options: They have a veggie burger

R&D is another fabulous Hillstone establishment. It's fantastic. The night we went it was pretty busy. There's a small parking structure right outside with plenty of parking (it was nearly empty when we visited). Our server was lovely, but didn't know many details about the menu. We have a special diet and instead of saying "I don't know, let me ask" to many of our questions, she gave us the wrong answer, we ordered, then she asked, found out she was incorrect and we had to place a new order which was a little frustrating. The food was great. The ambiance was fantastic. I'm not really a fan of TVs at an upscale feeling place, but they were fine. They do have a dress code, which I love. If you wear a hat, they'll ask you to sit outside on the patio.

Get the Roasted Salmon and thank me later. The service here is Always fast and friendly. The thing about all the Hillstone restaurants is they are designed for streamlining and turn and burn style of heavy traffic. They know what they are doing and they do it without making you feel rushed. But as a guest you should understand 3 hour conversation, middle of a rush on a Friday night are quite rude and selfish. And this is what Irvine and Newport people are like unfortunately, just like the restaurant does a great job at being fast and efficient, the guests should be understanding and when you're whole table is done eating, and that includes dessert, then you need to leave. 3 hour conversations shouldn't be done at a busy restaurant on Friday nights. Lol. Please eat and leave and allow others to get in here on busy night. This is a pleading to the local Orange County moms who think they are better than everyone else.

Very disappointed in the treatment of the staff. We showed up with a 9 month old and instead of telling us that they simply don’t allow children at the restaurant then condescendedly said, “does everyone in this party have a heartbeat” - all while pressing on her chest to visually show us what she was referring to. It was insulting and unprofessional. Is this the way your train your staff?
