NOOOOOO! I'm so sad that this placed closed down. I sorta knew that it moving uptown might cause problems because it's so expensive! Needless to say, this place was great!!!! Good drinks, delicious food! I met the owner and she was great. If they ever open back up, I'll be the first in line! The CHICKEN WINGS are the best CHICKEN WINGS I've had in the Bay Area. So good, so tender and the taste was incredible. I tasted a hint of brown sugar?? ayooooo

My law firm is down the street for this place. I went to Mixt first because one of the attorneys in my office highly recommended it. There were flies all over that food but that's another review or another day. I was walking back to my office when I saw Brown Sugar Kitchen! I walked in and instantly smelled wonderful. The host was on the phone at the time but assured me she would be with me asap. The host got off the phone and started doing other things and going to different tables. The bartender didn't have anyone sitting at the counter and the owner or manager was sitting off to the side but got up to turn the music up and back to the side where she was sitting. I made eye contact with the host several times. After 10 mins I got up and the host AGAIN said I'll be right with you. I'm not sure if it was because I look like a kid and not a 30 year old business professional or she was just overwhelmed and doesn't know how to manage her time and customers. Either way the owner or bartender should have greeted me or asked me if there was something I needed. I left highly disappointed and still hungry. I got there at 12/22/2021 at 1:06 and left at 1:19. I get treated different when I wear a suite/dress but I get completely ignored wearing a hoodie and jeans. So if you aren't dressed business professional don't bother coming here they don't think you can afford it anyway!

Was excited to try this place as I saw on the food network, the huge waffles and fried chicken! When I finally got to go 1.They removed the Waffles out of their menu.. 2.Fried Chicken is very small mind you 2 piece for $8!! But worse thing was paying for $9 cornbread for 1 serving!!!? You need to make that 1 full skillet order if yoyr going to charge $9..I make cornbread with a skillet at home so its def NOT worth the price. I cannot see myself returning to this place

Soggy pathetic chicken. It use to be so much better at the original location. Not even offering waffles anymore. They didn't even have breakfast cocktails on Saturday . Like what? This place is completely over rated with so many better options for great fried chicken around. So sad because I want to support the business but I just can't say there was much to enjoy about this dinning experience. Plenty of open seats on a Saturday.

Nice new venue worthy of your attention. Brown Sugar Kitchen has dark walls and ceilings, with big windows and well controlled lights creating a very comfortable vibe. The music was noticeable, enjoyable but well modulated for easy conversations. The menu is southern soup to nuts with everything ordered for the table to be enjoyed by everyone. The fried chicken was crispy and moist. There are sandwiches too. There is a full bar with inventive cocktails and a small beer selection. The service was attentive and well paced.

I had the pleasure of having dinner with my mother and aunt at Brown Sugar Kitchen. We tried a great variety of dishes enjoying the fried chicken, smoked chicken and sausage gumbo, oxtails, greens and smoked yams. Also enjoyed the b-side, a unique treat! The service was great, the ambiance and playlist provided the perfect backdrop for a memorable meal. The cherry on top was that we were able to meet the owner Tonya Holland! Couldn’t ask for a better first visit. We look forward to going back soon.

Came in on a referral and man they did not dusappont. Always looking to support Black owned businesses and glad I supported this one! Ordered take out, and it was ready on time and correct. Win! Service was warm and friendly. Ordered the baked spicy wings and black eye pea salad. YASSS YUM! the wings were cooked through and tasty. Not as spicy as I was expecting but still good. Black eye pea salad..... different. Not bad not fire in the middle. Different taste served cold but I still ate it with hot sauce and it was tasty. Co worker ordered the collards and Mac and said was super good Def will come back!

We decided to visit this place while we were in town from AZ. We walked about 20 minutes to get here to find out they were closed although the door stated 12-8pm. We got here at around 3:30 and they were closed. Tried calling and no one answered. Eventually we saw a lady who was putting a sign outside and she said they had patio seating. We decided to try it. Bottom line my chicken sandwich looked and tasted like it was sitting out overnight. Super dry. The Mac and cheese has breadcrumbs over it which should never be placed over top of Mac and cheese. Which wasn't good to begin with. We ordered the skillet cornbread which was stated as an "appetizer". It came out as one slice of dry cornbread. There was 3 of us and we could barely share it. No to mention it costs $9 for a single slice of dry cornbread. Total for everything was $100 which to be honest I could get a top chef meal in AZ and have before for that cost. I regret this being our first impression of food in downtown Oakland. Don't recommend it. Not to mention on top of this, it gave me and my wife a stomach ache. Probably since the food was brought out almost immediately after ordering, which makes me presume it was not fresh at all. Pretty disgusting. Hope it doesn't give us food poisoning for the rest of the trip.

Have not been in years however this review needs to be had. The waffle with the light maple syrup and the fried chicken and Mac and cheese and grits. Anyway if you guys would PLEASE deliver to east Oakland area I would be soooooo happy. Great great great food.

Let me tell you! I sat down immediately which was great but it took the food forever to come out. A couple of people had their food before me but it was fine. The drinks were FIRE but the food wasn't that great. I needed to add salt, pepper, hot sauce to all my food. I'll only go there for drinks.

Absolutely amazingThe blackened catfish was the entree I chose. Oh my goodness delicious. Roasted pepper sauce and pickled veggies over the fish which was on a bed of rice. Once again this place never fails. Although no more waffles and chicken together anymore don't know when that changed but I definitely will be going back again.

Worth the hype! If you're going for brunch, just get there 10 min before opening so you secure yourself a table. It's nice to have the parklet open, I hope they keep that as a seating option in the future!

The beignets were okay, somewhat bland and nothing to write home about. My mimosa lacked the flavor of elderflower even tho I requested St Germain, l had to ask twice & they also barely put any orange juice in it...?The shrimp & grits and collard greens were superbly seasoned despite not having any smoked meat products in the recipes.I forgot to get dessert which might have redeemed the meal. $34 was pricey for the portion size, doubt I'll be going back anytime soon.
