If you are looking for SOUL food this ain't it! I think they should market it as a soul food fusion restaurant! The only think nostalgic were the dishes and maybe the dinner trays in the corner. There is no need for me to describe the boiled peanuts, Angela below described it best! The pickle brined chicken was seasoned well, however, the pickle flavor was a bit overwhelming for my taste. And I Love pickles! The whipped potatoes were decent but underwhelming. When you say something is candied, I expect it to be sweet! The candied butternut squash should be named mandarin glaze butternut squash. The sole was over seasoned and is described to be served with Dungeness crab remoulade, which is supposed to be similar to tartar sauce, but this was not! Furthermore, Dungeness where?? Disclaimer...... I am a dessert snob! The pineapple upside down loaf, as I will refer to it, was extremely dense and saturated in the sauce, the pineapple was good though. Finally, the POUND CAKE, we had one bite! The sauce overpowered that cake and was not flavorful. In conclusion, I eat out regularly as I am a foodie, a true lover of food. I have never tasted soul food prepared this way in any state I've been! I hope they have success with their target demographic!

Not quite sure what all the hype is about. To be fair, I have only tried this place once. I'm not even sure it deserves a 3 star when you factor in price.

Great service friendly staff and food was delicious. Collard greens were my favorite.

The hardest thing about Burdell is that you can't eat everything in one sitting but you really want to. Tonight was our first time dining here, and we are already looking forward to going back. My husband and I started with cocktails and they were absolutely delicious. Then we had the chicken liver and waffles and we all but licked the plate. For dinner I had the fried petrale sole and my husband had the pork neck. We also couldn't resist getting the whipped potatoes, which were everything you want potatoes to be. We both loved our entrees and stole bites from each other. Very flavorful, very lovely presentation, and nice portions. For dessert we shared the chocolate puddin and it was also excellent. We were well taken care of by all of the staff and got some lovely drink recommendations that paired well with each course. We really enjoyed this dining experience and look forward to returning. We would like to do the family dinner with beverage pairing next. Love this place!

Had an incredible meal here with friends a few days ago. Everything was so fire, especially the shrimp, the chicory salad, greens, and the pound cake and pudding. Will be back for

I’ve been to Burrell three times now. My first visit was a popup on MacArthur Blvd while the last two visits were at the newly opened restaurant. My first Burrell experience was great. The culinary innovation, execution, service and ambiance were all there.I don’t know what’s happen but my last two visits were not great. Everything from the food and service to the atmosphere and value/pricing were mediocre at best.In fact, my third visit I didn’t even eat because I walked out due to such bad service. Mandatory service fees that aren’t justifiable. Small food portions. Vibes aren’t good. Food isn’t good. Service was bad.Wanted to really like Burdell but I won’t return.

Overpriced and while service and ambience is amazing the food lacked genuineness. Not for me but others may like it. I support locally owned spots so don't want to knock this place but it's not what I expected.

First and foremost, the food is delicious. We got the family style sampler menu for the whole table - this is definitely the way to go to get the broadest experience. The cornbread was out of this world. I asked them to pack up a small sliver that was left and got home to discover that they had replaced it with a whole new slice. The service was friendly and prompt. Great reasonable wines. A definite must try! I would go back again and again if I lived in the area.

Came with a group of friends and shared a lot of the menu. Servers were very friendly and attentive from the get go. They had a few cocktails and a decent wine list. Although they were out of two of the first wines we wanted, the server recommended a wine for us in a similar style and price. The place is very warm with everything in amber and mood lighting. It has a retro 70s vibe. Overall I had a good experience, but food was good but not that special. Boiled peanuts in peanut sauce were mushy inside, though the miso sauce was amazing. Chicory salad was delicious with peppery lettuce, crispy wild rice, and pomegranate seeds in a bright acidic dressing. Chicken liver and waffles was fantastic with creamy chicken liver mousse, crispy chicken skins, and a delicious waffle. The presentation was a little unappealing as the chicken liver and chicken skins looked a little bit like cat food. Bbq shrimp were excellent, juicy, tasty, well seasoned, with the heads on. Rice main dish with mushrooms was also great, so savory and plump chewy rice. Pork was also fantastic, so fatty and tender. Stuffed chicken was decent. Mashed potatoes were a butter and cream classic potato. Corn bread was good. Carrots were plain glazed carrots, maybe a little overcooked. For dessert I loved the chocolate peanut mousse. The lemon pound cake was a little dry. Glad I came, and really hope this place does well! Love the vibe and delicious food.

I wanna preface this review with the following info for context to dispel any preconceived perceptions: I’m from NYC, been to 9 countries. My fiancé has been to 17 countries.Been to every state except Seattle, Florida, & Wyoming & New Mexico. It’s safe to say, we’ve dined out at a bunch of places around this country & others. We came here for our 5 year anniversary dinner. After seeing all these positive reviews, My fiancé made the reservation. Online it asked if there were food restrictions & if this was a special occasion. She noted I was gluten-free & that it was our Anniversary. We got there on time & still had to wait about 12 minutes to be seated. Fine, no prob. From when we got there to when our food arrived- no lie, a ONE HOUR WAIT. Bruh. Our waited was attentive & a nice guy, kudos to him.Ionno why we filled out that info on our reservation, when nobody made reference to either the food restriction or the Anniversary. ?Look, our main gripe w/ this spot was everything we got was MID. The drinks, the food, the maitre d who seated us’s attitude: MID.For two mains, one starter, 2 sides, 2 drinks & dessert: $211. Now, That’s a decent price for a nice dinner for two adults dining out,But $211 (the 20% gratuity was enforced onto the check, btw) for runny mashed potatoes, the tiniest of cocktails, an unexplained stuffing in the chicken that when asked about was met w/ an exasperated tone, felt like “nah, fam”.For all that, bring back Aunt Mary’s (the spot that was here before Burdell’s) brunch w/ the Pain Perdu & seasonal hash & eggs. This food is why Keith Lee said he wasn’t comfortable reviewing the food here in The Bay.In summation: I HATED having to write this, as it seems like Black Folks are behind this spot & we love supporting our own. I too, would have loved to write a glowing review like the ones beneath mine, it just wasn’t our experience unfortunately.

Not getting the hype here. For a southern soul place, you've got to nail the cornbread. Anything else is just inexcusable. This rendition was sad, dry, and lifeless. The chicory salad was decent, but at nearly 20 bucks, overpriced. The sole was the highlight but again for the price should have a bit more going on. I get that automatic 20% is becoming more commonplace which is fine since this is what I'd have tipped anyways. The issue arises when the service becomes lazy and forgetful because there is no incentive to try anymore. Would not return.

Hipster soul food! Who knew? Ok but not special. The ceviche came in a shared bowl with two little forks. Not a CDC approved serving method. Tasty though The fried fish was unremarkable and headed towards cold They need to up their game to compete with the other excellent restaurants in Temescal

We went to Burdell with a group of friends and had the JOY of having Mo take care of us. The food was PHENOMENAL, and the service was EVEN BETTER. I can't point to another time that I had such a warm, kind, and FUN server that *truly* took the experience from fantastic to phenomenal. Would recommend 10/10 times, and would come back any time for the chicken & waffles, the cornbread, and the dirty rice (AND to see Mo!!!).

The room temperature sparkling water for $8 started the meal on the wrong foot. But I was eager to course correct. Next came the chicken liver mousse and waffle dish. The mouse was cold and mixed with battered and fried shallots, also cold, surprisingly. It was as if the fried shallots and mousse had sat in the fridge for a while. The waffle had an interesting speckled fill, which looked nice but the flavor and texture were mediocre at best. Perhaps with freshly fried shallots and warm mousse and a fresh waffle this could have struck a chord; but it felt like eating it the day after, cold and lackluster. Two misses so far. Next came the cornbread. Surely this would be good. But it also missed. I've had dry cornbread; I've had not sweet enough cornbread; this missed the mark in a different way. The texture was almost gummy. The top reminded me of a Dutch crunch sandwich loaf. It wasn't hot, didn't melt the butter. It had a similar speckled color palette to the waffle. Not yellow ish like typical corn bread. Sadly, another miss. The last dish that arrived was the $38 roasted chicken and dumplings. The chicken is stuffed with some type of spinach puree and roasted. Served with dough dumplings that reminded me a lot of gnocchi. The flavor and texture of the chicken were unique. The texture reminded me a bit of chicken tenders yet there was skin and a bone in the leg so it couldn't have been too processed. It was stranger than it was tasty. I almost didn't write this review because it hurts to throw shade on a local newish spot. It is possible we ordered wrong or it was a bad night; however with such a small menu, I think everything needs to be solid. For what it's worth, my dining partner felt the same and that compelled me to share my experience The service was acceptable, but nothing particularly memorable. The ambiance was fine. There was a coherent aesthetic to the decor- sort of a minimalist 70s style. It could use a few plants, and real candles on the tables. It was $100 to feed two adults and a 5 yr old.

Ate here for a second time and it just as amazing as I remembered it. The chicken liver and waffles and BBQ Shrimp were my favorite. Both so full of flavor. We also got the sole and pork neck. The service was great. This time we sat in the back of the restaurant and had a view into the kitchen from our table. Our total for two drinks, two for the tables, one cornbread and two for Supper including Tip and Tax was $219.
