I had a nice dinner. They offer half portions, so it is affordable. Just steps from the BART station (bus bay side). A good stop on the way to the airport. The airport bus line is there and cheaper than the BART shuttle.

During my time in Oakland, I went specifically hunting for a breakfast burrito. I grew up in the desert southwest, and though some say breakfast burritos were invented in California, I’ve yet to have better than what I’ve eaten in New Mexico, Arizona, Colorado, or Texas. But I don’t live in those places now; I live in Washington state, where finding any kind of breakfast burrito, let alone a good one, is like hunting for the Holy Grail. So I settled on the Guadalajara restaurant, because anywhere with 4.5 stars and thousands of reviews has got to be good, right?I chose the traditional chorizo, rather than the “American style” sausage, and I asked for mine “mojado” or “wet,” which to a Southwesterner just sounds weird. (We say “smothered” when talking about salsa or chili poured over a burrito.)The burrito was all right; the sauce, somehow weirdly sugary. Why sugary? Why would salsa ever be sugary? I’ll note that the server looked at me like I was mad when I asked that salsa be poured over my burrito, so perhaps that just isn’t done here, despite what I’ve heard?Yet, having lived in the burrito-wasteland that is Washington for so long, anything is better than what Northwesterners pass for desayuno. I’m afraid, though, that the only way to get good Southwestern food of any kind, really, is to travel to the Southwest.

I was there a couple of times, food is not what I was expecting but what’s worse I wasn’t welcomed in. The waitress hit the table with my glass of orange juice, and every employee was impolitely staring at me! Obviously I won’t be coming back, and I don’t recommend this place for White folks!
