It was the 4th of July and I was craving bbq. Ms. Kettle's was one of the few places open, and I was SO GLAD! I ordered the 2 way combo with ribs and brisket and it was DELICIOUS. I asked for the bbq sauce on the side (I'm a dipper). The Mac and cheese was super cheesy and the yams were perfect (not too sweet). They also have yummy cornbread and the banana pudding is INSANE. You can call in your order or walk up and wait a few minutes. Great service & great food!

Called and spoke to Terry. Very polite and friendly. We came in and bought a rack of pork ribs and good portion of brisket. Drove home a couple hours and popped in the oven, dinner was a hit.. BOMB.

Best BBQ in the town! They get it right with a 3way, with Links, Pork Ribs and Brisket. Sides are bomb too, one man show, so be patient and you will enjoy the bays best BBQ!

They hooked us up with dinner for two days+ Get the hot sauce - medium is good but hot is divine!

We love the ribs here! They're smoked to perfection, with a nice peppery rub. The potato salad is always a go to! This is truly a hidden gem, he's doing all of this as a passion, and all on his own. We've ordered a few times and always been impressed, skip the big joints and give MZ a call! I was shocked how good the ribs were the first time I ordered. If he doesn't answer on the first call, keep trying!

First time trying this place and I was more than satisfied. I had chicken and yams and the chicken was so good I barely used any sauce. The corn muffins were better than my grandma's.

So Sunday's are usually my cheat days and this Sunday 4/24/22 I really wanted to make it worth my time, so as usual I got on Yelp to find something really tasty to eat. MZ Kettles BBQ came across my timeline so I figured hey why not some BBQ, perfect day for it. I looked at few pics of the food, checked the menu out and everything seemed to be ok. I gave them a call, placed a phone order for BBQ Combo with Links and Ribs, and a Side of Potato Salad and Baked beans. When I got there I noticed I did not smell not one hint of food being smoked like every other BBQ restaurant ive been to so that was def a red flag. But I decided to go ahead and purchase the food which was $32.00 dollars and some change. Got home pop the lid and there was about 5 pieces of link, super dry might I add, and 2 burned half of 1 ribs. Potato salad was a mix of little bitty pieces of Potato, and a-bunch of other unknown things, with so much black pepper it was literally all you tasted. The baked beans had some sort of ground meat in it and the meat tasted like old ground beef, everything was absolutely disgusting. I gave him a call up and told the guy who placed my order that I did not want the food and that I was bringing it back. On my way I stopped at Evert and Jones on Mac Arthur in the Laurel District place my order for the same exact thing except I even got a side of baked Beans for less then what I paid at this place. The pics below shows what got at Evert and Jones vs what I got from this place, so you do the math. For anyone in Oakland looking for BBQ and I know we dont have many choices, but stick with Evert and Jones cause this place aint it. Also I the inside of this establishment was extremely dirty and Junk was everywhere, and to be honest I was turned off as soon as I walked in, and only paid for my order because I drove a few miles, I was hungry and I was hoping the food would be great but boy was I wrong. Moral of the story if you go to a BBQ restaurant and dont smell any meat being smoked its def a red flag and I would walk right out. Also check your order before you leave to save time. cause some places hope you dont check because Im sure this guy knew exactly what he was doing when he plated my order.

Totally recommend this spot!! The links are the best in the whole bay area!!!!! You got to try it!!!!

Wokey McWokeface ..

Flint's Reincarnated! Short review: This place is amazing. Especially the links. YOU HAVE TO TRY THE LINKS. On 2nd thought don't. There'll be more for me. Best Links in the Bay Area by far. The ribs are very thick & meaty. And the brisket is delicious. The beans have chunks of meat in 'em. And the potato salad is fantastic. I didn't try any desserts. Long review: This location was the original Everett & Jones BBQ. Shirley Everett, the sister that owned the place, was so excited that a black man got elected Prez in '08 that she bought a building catty corner from this store and turned it into a cheezy Obama Museum/Church w/ all sorts of Obama tchotchkes the adoring public could buy. But like all things Obama, the Museum failed. I suspect it was such a horrendous financial blunder that it dragged her BBQ business down w/ it and that that's why E&J's Original Fruitvale store closed. I first came here after Everett & Jones went out of business in the same location. It was not yet called Mz. Kettles but something else I don't recall. For years I didn't return even after it changed into Mz.Kettle's. My bad. Anyone lived here in the East Bay long enough to remember Flint's BBQ? Long time East Bayers still long wistfully for it. Willie Flintroy's store near 66th & Shattuck, across the street from the Starry Plough, was open 'til Midnight on weekdays and 2am on weekends. There would be a line out the do' after midnight. The service was always slow and surly. It was filthy; we'd have drunken conversations w/ the cockroaches on the walls. And nobody cared because the BBQ, esp. the links, was just that good. After they divorced, Mrs. Flintroy got the store on San Pablo. Mr. Flint's passed in '72 but his brothers (Neil & Freeman) did a great job keeping the Shattuck store going until the early 90's. Scuttlebutt on the street is that crack took hold of the kids and the BBQ joint just died. The point of all this is that Terry Brown, Mz.Kettle's proprietor, has been BBQ'g in Oakland since the early '80s. He's an East Bay BBQ OG and his links proclaim it.

I was craving bbq today after going river rafting. I wanted to try a new spot out so went on yelp to see what's around. After looking at options this was close to me and I was just starving. I got the 2 way plate(link & brisket ) and I will say the food was amazing the meat had great flavor and bbq sauce was so good. But baby let me tell you about the Mac and cheese and greens was hella good and I like that they put smoke meat in the greens!!!! Big plus...they did go up in the pricing so whatever is on here is completely different inside. So just be mindful that the food will be a few dollars more. But the food is worth it. It was my first time here. I will definitely be back!

I'm from the south and this is legit. The sauce is out of this world...get the spicy it's so yummy.

So we came here because Ms genny was having technical difficulties in the kitchen. We got a slab of ribs, mac n cheese and a 3 way with beans, yams, brisket, chicken and homemade links. Ok. The beans are the best beans from any bbq place I've ever had. Full of flavor. I'd come back just for them. The yams. Same. Perfect. Left not wanting anything but more. The Mac n cheese is good. It's really good but not the best! Full of cheese and seasoning and it satisfies. The ribs are very good but I've had better. The sauce was good but I've had better. The home made links were so sad. For something that this man makes it should only be fresh. They were from yesterday or the day before. So dry and bland. I expect a link to be spicy. Hot link? It was the worst thing and the greatest let down. The chicken and ribs were good but all in all we won't travel to come back tmrw. If gennys was closed again next time were in town we'd try another place over coming back to this place. The man was very friendly but the wait was a bit long for bbq that should be hot and ready by opening?

Wow!!! You could easily miss the place when driving by (I passed it a couple of times), but this place doesn't play around. It's not about the decor, it's about the food. Oakland has quickly become a west coast BBQ mecca and this place holds it's own. I did a tour of the 4-5 local establishments and Mz Kettle's wins the best overall meal award. Everything is smackin... this isn't a bay area version of BBQ, it's got that southern feel. Everything full of TLC, intention and flavor while not too greasy. The owner is kind and attentive and will be getting our business at least a few times a month.

Didn't like the food because you can taste the fuel they cooked with and they didn't have anyone in the store when I came in and they still forgot to give me my yams I paid for but it probably was for the best!
