I ordered online and went to pick up but the restaurant was closed. Not sure why someone would be allowed to order online if the place is closed.Edit: Order number was 111607675 on what the clucks website

This is am eating establishment I'll have to go to a few more times. I'd been watching video recipes of Hainanese Chicken Rice and checking Yelp, I was excited to find this eatery close by my employer.can't remember if I first stopped by on a Tuesday or Wednesday and while it showed open, they were I'm facto closed. Decided to try the, on a Friday around noon. With the farmers market in full swing in Old Oakland, I made the 15 minute walk to What the Cluck. I'd ordered ahead and my food, in a bag was waiting for me. Another 15 minutes to get back to work and needless to say the food was no longer warm. Not the fault of What theCluck and I could have heated it an oven or microwave. Opening it, like the dish, worldwide, it's relatively unimpressive looking. Lots of white from the poached chicken to the rice and the light colored broth. Still was the flavor with the price? Overall, it was satisfying, the chicken was moist and flavorful, with a nice fluffed rice with notes of chicken fat. The broth was simple by tasty and accompanied the chicken rice nicely. I did use the chili dipping sauce p, which topped off Friday meal. Would I go back? Yup! I plan on returning for this same dish and a chance to try others.. This was something a bit different from the usual Asians hole the wall places I usually favor in Chinatown.

Chicken didn't have flavor, pieces of sharp chicken bones, and rice was undercooked. Also ordered the chicken wings fry as hell!

I really enjoy these Asian chicken spots that serve simple, boiled chicken accompanied with flavorful rice and a side of broth. It truly is Asian comfort food and grew up eating it on special occasions...whether it be a Hainanese chicken (Chinese version) with the ginger/scallion/garlic sauce with salt/oil or Khao Man Gai (Thai style) with the savory, sweet spiced soybean dipping sauce, it sparks wonderful food memories. So when I heard a new spot had opened in Old Oakland I was really excited as sometimes you just want some basic, clean food. After 2 years of being bookmarked I finally had a chance (along with the coworkers) to try What the CluckClassic (Khao Man Gai) - juicy, silky, boneless chicken (even the white meat) with nicely cooked rice and accompanied with a few slices of cucumber and sauce 5/5Crispy Chicken (Khao Man Gai Tot) - is similar to a chicken Katsu , breaded with panko and fried with a (bottled) sweet chili sauce - coworker loved itFried Chicken Skins - (Cluckins) crispy, crunchy and tastes like chicken :) - delicious. Yeah only discovered fried chicken skins at another Asian Chicken spot in Santa Clara and now a nice treat! Fried Chicken Wings - Cluck Wings - nice fry but (to me) had an odd flavor...not the seasoning as it was absent but like re-cooked wings...my co-worker liked them but a pass for meItems delicious and no complaints. Limited interaction (except to hand your order) so can't say much for customer service as they have a kiosk to place your order which takes about 10-12 minutes for items to be ready. Plenty of outdoor seating (bistro, picnic tables, benches) along the whole closed-off block with counter seating and 2 small tables inside.Located near Ratto's and Swan's Market in Old Oakland. Street parking available

The chicken and their sauce are nice. The combo set was a good deal but unfortunately when I ordered online I always get some spoiled food or stale food. I gave another try but still some of my food are inedible :(

Every time I'm not feeling well or want something akin to comfort food, this is my go to place! I kid you not, when I was down with covid, I ordered two quarts of their soup, their classic meal and extra rice, and survived on that, and maybe even credit them with feeling better!I love their classic chicken, and the rice is the star of the meal, as it should be!I've also ordered the crispy chicken, and I don't know how they do it, but it's pretty flavorful, crispy and not dry! I've also tried their desserts. Both the Thai pudding with coconut and the mango with sticky rice are delicious! Definitely a go to for comforting good food!

We wanted KHAO Mun Kai miss the Thai KHAO Mun Kai so we came here. It was quite good the rice & chicken reminds me of Thailand. If they had the sauce with chili in it I would gave them a 5 star.

My first office lunch meal of the new year was What The Cluck.Feels like it would make sense that the first review of 2023 follows suit.I appreciate the owner's sense of humor with such a name. I learned, later on, that What The Cluck has 5 Bay Area locations; 3 in San Francisco, 1 in Berkeley, and this one in Oakland. The founder is of Thai origin and decided to bring his love for khao man gai, the go-to item, to Bay Area lovers of Chicken Rice.I have to say that the meal was pretty good.Meal was simple, nostalgic, and satisfying. It came with a side order of scallion and ginger soup. It was perfect for the cold winter months. The ordering process was simple - a touch screen machine towards the entrance of the store. The owner appears to also have a partnership with Milk Bar (the cookie and dessert company), so you can order that separately if you want a sweet treat. The pick up experience wasn't the most pleasant. Due to possible language barriers, and maybe shy-ness due to it, the people behind the counter weren't very outspoken when calling out orders. I was almost sure the order behind the table was mine, but since it wasn't bagged up I didn't want to rush it. After 5 minutes and nothing being called, I ended up approaching the counter. Somehow they had bagged the 2 orders after mine, while the identified items were just still sitting there. Not an issue, but maybe they could have a screen that shows orders ready to be picked up? A microphone with somebody calling it would be also be a solution.

I've only ordered from here once but man did they leave an impression. I can't stop thinking about my meal... I ordered the Ultimate and it definitely lived up to its name. The chicken two ways with the breast meat and then leg meat with skin were both so tender and delicious in its own way - and I almost never like breast meat! Under that chicken was some liver - boiled but not over or under cooked - just perfect! The soft boiled egg was just a cherry on top but very much appreciated. The double sauce though really just says how extra this dish is - in the most amazing way. The double sauce, the liver, everything - this is my dish if I were to be reincarnated as a dish. My boyfriend had the classic KMG and he loved it. He loves chicken and he loves the chicken both ways on his dish too. Perfectly moist and tender, and the perfect amount of sauce! On the side, I added some liver because I love it and they give you a decent amount for extra $3! The cluckins were also the bomb. They were so crispy and delicious - even surviving the long delivery all the way from oakland to richmond. Such a yummy side and snack to add that crisp factor to the meal. We ended the dinner with a delicious mango sticky rice - the serving is kind of small so definitely get two if you want a good size dessert. We were so full from the meal yet we both still had leftovers, so I'd say it's a good bang for your buck too! Time to decide when to order from here again... it better be soon.

Order the popular Khao Man Gai.If you were southeast Asian, you should know that:. A chicken without skin is not fresh chicken . American chicken made for Southeast asian recipes lost most flavor due to their industrialized chicken farming and breeds. This is no different. I hope the original Thai recipe has to have the skin on, even though they were made with industrialized farm chickens. So as predicted, chicken doesn't taste fresh, feels soggy, and probably will go bad the next day (in fact I tasted some leftovers before and thrown them away immediately).

Tasty and friendly take out place. You've earned a repeat customer. The classic chicken dish was tasty and not dry.

Ordered chicken Katsu and Ultimate via Uber eats take out. I had had expectation of this place since there were a lot of good reviews but was disappointed. The rice is flavorful but the chicken itself lacked flavor. The sauce had way too much ginger. The soup that came with the dish tasted too meaty. This is a personal taste though, as I had eating lots of chicken in Singapore and I felt the flavor is clear to Thai than Singapore.
