Small coffee gem with limited range of food options located at a cozy backyard right off Cal Ave. Ordered a golden latten and a salmon toast and I must say everything was delicious. The coffee had a very good balance between the turmeric and the honey which made this special drink delicious. The salmon toast was also very good with a good amount of salmon. However, I felt like the portion was slightly too small. The coffee shop was very busy on a Sunday morning but service was rather friendly and efficient.

Overall, this place is a gem. Staff is very welcoming. Great coffee.Note that there are a lot of fleas and the tables are by no means "elegant". The seating is rather scrappy, but it is a great coffee shop.

Chill spot to hang out by yourself or with a group. You can grab a bite or just a drink and it'll be a good time either way.All that said, the pourovers are skippable. Very under extracted and the ratio felt super off as the drink was a dilute mess. As reddit always says: they need to grind finer.Would still recommend stopping by, it's a unique spot to check out!

We loved our first experience at Backyard Brew! I got an oatmeal latte with vanilla extract and a little bit of simple syrup, and it was delicious. My husband got the banana bread latte which he said was good but I liked my drink better. It was relatively busy when we went on a rainy Sunday afternoon. It was cool to see it has such a local community vibe and people wanted to be there even though it's outside and it was a little bit drizzly. Clearly they've cultivated a great community and feels like a great small business to support!

Love how it's a little hidden away on California Ave. Good place to hang out. They have non coffee options. I had a hot chocolate that was non sweetened which is different and felt healthier lol.

Backyard Brews is a hidden gem in the alleys right off of California Ave. The road has been secured for al dente dining, so the road to get here IS somewhat closed to the public -- however, DO NOT FEAR! This coffee shop is bustling and is quite outdoors like no other. The serene sound of the fountains and the hustle and bustle of local businesses bring buzz and light to this hidden gem. I love how it despite being outdoors, they still worked hard to make the best banana bread latte and croissant. Despite it being a little small, it didn't really matter much because the coffee beans that they used were quite "arabica".... with really strong coffee smell. It gives a sense of community, and the coffee shop wasn't too crowded at all. Kids were coming in and out with their families and it just makes sense to me that they did open an outdoor coffee shop like Backyard Brew did. Locally owned businesses for the win!

I've had this place bookmarked to check out and finally was down the street to check it out. Walked through the hallway and found the menu right before you enter. It was late in the afternoon so opted for a Chai to not be overly caffeinated LOL. Ordering was a breeze and had to use the restroom that was off to the side while I waited. I could smell coffee beans roasting and when I walked out I saw a man roasting coffee beans. Got to talking with one of the barista about the business what's popular and where to park (right behind the building). The chai was fine. Nothing out of this world. Cool space. Plenty of tables and chairs to sit. Space can feel crowded when busy. Menu visible to pick what to order ahead of time. Will need to come back and try their latte to have a better idea of the coffee here.

I discovered this cafe a few months ago. Very pleased that there is yet another option to have a cup of tea or coffee. I was also impressed with the service I received from Desmond. I had known Desi as a shy little boy. To see him now so outgoing and polite and eager to help was a joy. His mom told me later that it was this job at the cafe that helped him develop these skills. And so I want to laud the owners of Backyard Brew for hiring local youth, and providing them an opportunity to grow into themselves. At every visit to the cafe, I am so very impressed with how this young man is shaping up, and how he outperforms others much older than he. Thank you for fostering development of character and personality of our kids!

I feel transported out of Palo Alto into a beach side cafe or just another world walking in via the painted narrow corridor. The music greeting me at the end of the path and the smells of the coffee roasting hitting my senses. Yes please. Yes I'll meet you. Yes please let's meet at BYB anytime to hang out and catch-up I text my friends every Sunday for Farmers Market. Faves: Hibiscus tea, Oh Canada!, cappuccino.

So happy to have discovered Backyard Brew! Delicious coffee, & loved being able to sit outside and work (great WiFi and I could charge my laptop). Really awesome that it is owned by a Palo Alto native. Looking forward to coming back the next time I'm in town!

Backyard Brew was a cute little coffee alley that my group stumbled upon one afternoon. I got the desert rose latte, and it was very good, but my wife didn't finish her tea. A friend got an oatmilk matcha latte and it was so-so. The service at the register, however, was stand-offish, which made us not feel welcomed at all. As well, the area is all shade or covered, so if you are visiting on a cold day, you will be freezing from the windy gusts throughout the alley. All of that aside, my coffee was good and I liked how the bathroom's walls were plastered with comic book pages. The art and murals were also very cool, and gave the area a fun and quirky vibe. Someone was onsite roasting coffee beans, so the smell of coffee was on the air. I just wish the service was nicer and more welcoming (but, I am also considering that they may have just been cold as hell, cuz it was really cold over there).
