It's hard finding a place that can accommodate everyone's dietary restrictions but the people at Backyard have found a nice balance. The avocado tacos were gluten free and incredibly delicious and my meat eating friends were raving about the steak and fish tacos. The papusas were even better. I just can't wait until the next outing here!!

We dropped in for lunch yesterday hoping to check out the vegan menu. Much to our disappointment, they don't have the dedicated vegan menu anymore, however, you can veganize some items from the regular menu. The guy who took our order was super helpful and friendly. He even went into the kitchen and gave them a heads up to make everything vegan. We tried the black bean pupusas, hash brown tacos, and avocado tacos. The pupusas and the hash brown tacos were our favorites! The pour over coffee was excellent too. Great service, and good food overall!

Visited based on the vegan menu but alas they got rid of it and condensed to a regular menu where you can just omit things. Not really interested in doing that. Bring back the vegan menu and show you are really trying to make it vegan. Otherwise I don't trust your food and don't want to have to work on making one of your existing menu options taste good by having to make a bunch of substitutions.

For the early weekend riser, there aren't a lot of options for breakfast, and the available ones become quickly over-familiar. So a new discovery is like the holiday gift that turns up under the tree or in the mailbox days later. Backyard Kitchen is a clever coffee bar c** food truck accessed through a narrow alley on California Avenue. Tables and couches are sheltered by umbrellas and overhead bistro lights give the place a glow. I ordered the steak breakfast and was served a plentiful plate of hash browns, fried eggs and sizzling marinated steak. The steak was hands down the winner, though the hash browns were pretty darned good too. They roast their own coffee beans and the brew is dark and full. Happy to have discovered this hidden gem.

After seeing pupusas on the menu I tried to ask the chef about a Salvadoran dish called Sopa De Pata. Her reply to me: "No hablo inglés!" So I switch to my terrible Español but manage to talk to her for a good amount of the afternoon about Salvadoran cuisine what she cooks from it, and how many recipes she still has to learn from her mother. So if you go to have coffee at Backyard Brew, go say hi to Marisela and learn and taste some Salvadoran goodness!
