I met my better half here December of 2010 at a mutual friends birthday dinner. 13 years together September of this year. We still visit Hive Sushi from time to time to reminisce

It's a great local place away from the tourist. They have a good happy hour!

The nigiri-sushi was a little flat-tasting.

The baked sushi rolls are to DIE for!!! This place has everything, I have no idea why it doesn’t have a Michelin star. Some of the best rolls I’ve ever had and a hip vibe!

This review is long overdue. My girlfriends and I celebrated her birthday, and this restaurant was recommended by a foodie influencer. My one star rating is due to the following: 1. Service - slow and unattentive. We didn't have enough soy sauce dishes, and we asked for more. The server said she would be back with more once they are washed. It's a decent size restaurant and there weren't many guests, so we were puzzled that they didn't have clean dishes. 2. Don't trust all influencers or reviews - sushi was not good! Terrible and a rip off the best thing we ate were the shoe string fries! 3. Last but not least, we brought a Paris Baguette cake and a knife to cut it with. We were told that if we wanted to slice the cake in their restaurant, they would have to charge us $5 per slice to cut. That would have been a total of $20 since there were four of us (mind you this is a casual sushi spot). We insisted we would cut the cake ourselves, and they didn't allow us to! Even the server hadn't known of that rule until that nught. We decided on going to my friends place to cut the cake. Quite frankly, we were mistreated at the Hive and we will never return again! I don't think they liked us Asians hahaha. All good though there are so many other good sushi spots in SD that have better customer service and will treat us well.

This is a really solid casual sushi spot. You can find street parking, but you may need to walk a block or two depending on the time you go. They have happy hour every day, I believe it's from 5:00 to 8:00, but I would check with them. They also have all day happy hour on Sundays. This is a go to spot for my boyfriend and I because the staff is incredibly friendly, the prices are reasonable, and they are dog friendly. Their vegetable tempura is really good, and features vegetables like lotus root which felt higher end than expected. I wouldn't say that this is a spot when you're looking for the absolute best sushi of your life, but if you're looking for something that's solid in an environment that is comfortable and cozy and you just want to hang out and chill, this is a spot. It's not super authentic, but it's also more accessible for people who are local. Rather than some of the fancier places around town.

Staff particularly the waitress with dreads has terrible customer service. The waitress is rude and doesn't know what she is doing. To top it off we weren't even done eating and they asked us if we wanted to pay the bill FOUR times while there was no one waiting and open tables throughout. Horrible.

Slow service, miso soup came out cold and they never remembered to bring me a refill of hot tea.

I stumbled on to this place thanks to a friend's recommendation, and it's just a few blocks away from where I live. For my meal, I had the Scallop Gyoza, Yellowtail and Salmon Nigiri and of course their mouthwatering "Hot Mess" Roll, paired with a cucumber salad. Every course was fantastic and the service was prompt and gracious. To complement this I washed it down with a couple of beers. And the best part of it is that their Sunday Happy Hour is ALL DAY!! It couldn't have been more perfect. I found the ambiance to be sort of Hipsterish and the staff was friendly with no attitude. I think I found my new favorite Sunday Hangout. The combination of fantastic food; generous Happy Hour offerings and the relaxed atmosphere makes Hive Sushi and ideal spot for a leisurely Sunday bite and some well deserved relaxation.

Very cute spot and good vibes. Only thing is I almost died from eating the food. I got horrible tummy food poisoning. When we ordered the food 'sushi (raw fish)' it was warm and mushy and like it was sitting out for a while. One of the rolls had a literally fly in top stuck to the roll. The waiters were all drinking heavily so no wonder the food was left to sit for a while. We had to leave the food because if we ate anymore we should have for sure gotten horribly horrible ill. 3 days later and I'm still having number 3. I get that waiter can drink sometimes and it's a work vibe but. Sushi is a little different and getting sh*t faced while service is not okay.

To start off, the waitresses were taking shots, both of them. When we got there we said, oh well, our food might take longer than expected, about 30-40 minutes later, our first roll comes out, immediately, I noticed a bug in it. A live swirling moth stuck to the top of the sushi roll sauce. We immediately told her and she took it and they brought us another roll. Something with "spicy tuna" in it. I have to say I don't know what it is but it was not spicy tuna. This red dark looking PASTE in our sushi rolls too disgusting to take another bite. Second a piece of sashimi, immediately got gooey nasty vibes from it I wanted to leave. They comped all the food even though we ate none, and I paid for drinks, edimame, and a spicy miso. And luckily left a tip because the waiters were nice enough to understand. Likely they have been through this before. Felt sorry for them as they both looked stressed. Absolutely gross sushi. Not a sushi spot period. My stomach is very uneasy as I write this.

Seems like a pretty…western sushi joint with extremely slow service. Waited over 30 min for just 2 rolls. Completely unacceptable. There were very few customers before we sat down too so i don’t know what took them so long. Do not recommend. Also i ended up getting my rolls to go bc i had to go somewhere and i was literally upright and balanced and i open the box and see this lol its almost comical. No ginger no wasabi.

Anyone who's tired of the runaway ideas of what sushi has become.. needs to walk in the back and sit at the sushi and just settle in. Best I've had in ages. I've been everywhere. Tadakoro So-ichi Ota. This has an amazing place in a needed void. I'm all in

This place is great! We've been here twice and it was great both times. The spicy edamame, specialty rolls (GFR and tiger uppercut) and the shrimp gyoza were amazing! Service is fast and friendly, the only thing that I would change is the music, it can be a little overwhelming but other than that highly recommend. They also have a nice variety of sake and happy hour all day Sunday.
