This is the restaurant we always go to when we go San Diego. We went there last night and found out they are closing all their restaurants come 8/6/2022. So sad. We had our last meal last night. We both had prime rib. It was delicious. Will miss them. Thanks for the fine food and service all these years. Ernest & Margaret Canning

I don't usually write reviews but I read the reviews and thought this was going to be a great steakhouse. It was not. The food was not flavorful and part of the prime rib was a little tough. I got a side of mushrooms and onions and the onions were not cooked. The onion rings seemed frozen not fresh. Also had the artichoke dip and it was bland. The waiter was great tho so he got a good tip.

Our dinner was excellent, our server, Peter, was helpful and attentive. He suggested the prime rib, which was perfectly prepared. He used our names when speaking to us, which was very nice.

Three of us under a time constraint (going to Symphony by the bay) were able to enjoy a "leisurely" meal because of very fine service. Food choices (Shrimp scampi; petite cut Prime Rib; 12 oz Ribeye steak) were all good and large enough that we each had leftovers to take home. Only the comparison of how the house salad used to be, pre-Covid (excellent) and as it is now (OK, but nothing special) continues to let us down. One other minus: we were first to be seated in upstairs area, when it was still dark and empty.....and it remained mostly unused even until we were finishing....too quiet and dark.

We were celebrating my birthday. The food was great We went back a month later after making reservations on OpenTable to the same restaurant to celebrate my boyfriends birthday, and they are closed. I was able to make my reservation, update it, and was never told the restaurant was closed! We got all dressed up and drove 15 miles to see a sign that said ownership changed currently closed. With all our great technology, why does some thing like this happen?????? Who is the slacker in this scenario? And who do I owe my disapproving thanks to?

One of my husband's and my very first dates was here 9 years ago. We haven't been since pre-covid and were so happy with our dinner this week! The whiskey peppercorn sauce was as good as I remembered, the wine recommendation was great, and the service was excellent. Looking forward to returning soon!

We felt so lucky to have found this place. It was right next to our hotel. We took our oldest son who'd just graduated Marine boot camp and was very ready for se delicious food lol and the rest of our family for lunch. There was almost nobody there. The outside looked really rustic and we weren't sure what to expect. Inside was a very cool restaurant! The waiter was incredibly friendly and personable. The food was great, all 7 of us were happy with our food ( that's saying something with 4 kids at the table). It was delicious and looked beautiful when they served it. Would definitely go out of my way on another trip to go there

I like the bucolic location of the Hunter Steakhouse, hidden at the Western end of Mission Valley. The low-slung wooden building is tucked away right beside Intertstate 8 at the Taylor Street exit, yet you feel a million miles away among the swaying branches of the Eucalyptus trees all about. There is ample parking surrounding the restaurant. However, there are only two handicapped-designated spaces, which is insufficient given the older demographics of the restaurant's primary clientele. The various dining rooms on the ground floor and on two mezzanines above can be a bit solemn and dull. However, I like going to the downstairs bar to dine, which has a kickier vibe. You can by-pass the clutch of hostesses at the door and just proceed downstairs and choose a comfortable banquette at which to dine. The bartender has been with the establishment for some time. He will come from behind the bar to serve you. Accordingly, there may be some waits here and there when you need something. Nonetheless, the bar possesses more energy than the rest of the house.

The outside of the place always makes me thinkn it is closed, or will be soon. Inside, the atmosphere is welcoming. The menu boasts nice cuts of meat for a very good price. So I ordered the prime rib. And I was not disappointed! Also served with creamed and real horseradish. (I thought I may have had a sniffle, but no. My sinuses are clear after the horseradish!) Our waiter was working hard, but was so very nice and attentive. I will definitely be back!

Yikes... I'd like to give it a higher rating as the server was so kind and sweet. I ordered chipotle Mac and cheese and the prime rib. Prime Rib was great!! But please to whoever controls the menu.. take the chipotle Mac and cheese off.. it was absolutely terrible. Literally plain noodles that had cheese microwaved over it.. there was some type of oily/soupy stuff that filled up the bowl and it was just awful and inedible. Other than that great service lol

Sadly, the restaurant is not very clean, starting when you walk in the door. floor is quite dirty; room where we ate also dirty floor, chair has ripped seat cushion...BUT the dinner was delicious--love the salad and the salmon; husband had wonderful prime rib.

we were famished found this place and we are hands down coming back. hard core fans of this kitchen Everthing was perfect and tasted really great. not just good but great. its old school Drinks salads apps and main courses were scrumptious enough to say we will reco this place. our waiter was excellent friendly clean well spoken there's 50s 60s music not my thing. but food was so tasty who really cares. we had steaks lean and juicy sirloin and filet stuffed crab mushrooms. salads baked potato. Gruyer cheese potato Crocetts not a complaint wild rice could be a little more wilder lol but I ate every grain and took every left over home too. Drrinks were perfect too cosmo and crown royal rocks w lime twist. Bravo to the Chef and his Brigade in that Kitchen and the bartenders wait staff and Hosts . the Niewenhuis Family
