One of Hillcrest’s best kept secret! Gooseberries has become a staple for our morning coffee and sweet treat. Not only is everything homemade, fresh, and delicious, but Lee and his crew couldn’t be friendlier. Would give them 10 stars if I could!

My favorite place in all of San Diego. A locally owned restaurant that makes everything (bread, pastries, deli meats, etc) from scratch and does not compromise on flavor and quality. The açaí bowl and egg n’ biscuit sandwich are my favorite dishes along with their scones.

Love this place, such a chill spot, the owners are so nice, and there is nothing better than a coffee and a scone in the open air in San Diego.

The food is amazing! My husband and I split the burger and the biscuit + egg. Quality food, such good flavors and so unique. Even the pickle that came with the burger was so fresh and tasty. Even though you order at the counter the service was great throughout the meal and the owner checked in with us during our meal. The ambiance is sophisticated and cozy at the same time.

The gooseberries kafe is my favorite place to go in hillcrest for amazing food, incredible service, and the perfect environment for to talk to friends and family, do homework or work projects, or simply a place to relax. They have a wide variety of different pastries, coffees, and entrees to chose from, managing to make them all unique but perfect tasting. Not only is their food incredible, but their workers and service are just as good! The owners, Lee and Melissa, are outstanding at their jobs. They always have an amazing attitude and always manage to make costumers feel welcomed. They'll always greet you and try to make conversation. They're very personable, along with all of the staff. Overall, the Gooseberries Kafe is an absolute must go to kafe for the perfect way to start your morning!

This is a cute little outdoor cafe connected to either apartments or a hotel. You order at the front and they bring the food to you. The service for me is what kind of shocked me. I ordered the breakfast plate on the menu which says "Breakfast Plate - 15 Two eggs paired with your choice of: house sausage, crispy prosciutto, or grilled veggies. Served with a side of fresh fruit, house-made Mini Bread Loaves, and our Gooseberry Jam." I asked to have just egg whites and they let me know that wasn't possible so I was like okay no eggs and I'll take the sausage. I definitely read the menu wrong because I thought the food would be sausage and veggies. But when my plate came out it was what is shown in the picture below. A dirty strawberry, 2 sausage patties, and mini bread loaves. So I asked the food runner about it and she said that the plate doesn't come with veggies you need to ask for it. So yes definitely my fault I read then menu wrong. So then I asked if I could get a side of veggies and they said it would be $6 more because they don't offer substitutions. And as this interaction was happening one of the cooks shouts from the top of her lungs "NO SUBSTITUTES" honestly it's just kind of funny looking back at it. So I decided to pass. I just don't really think that a sausage, mini bread loaves and a dirty strawberry is worth $15.

Like many other reviewers I discovered this little neighborhood gem and I go there every day they're open. The owners and staff are lovely and will do absolutely anything they can for you, and everything on their menu is worth trying. I'll add a couple tips for those of you who might be discovering this place via yelp that both have to do with the space they're occupying, which they don't own and can't really do anything about: First, if you want certain food items avoid peak hours (breakfast or lunch rush on weekends, mainly) unless you are patient and plan on hanging out for a while. There is inherently limited kitchen space and that can create bottlenecks if a bunch of people order things that have to be grilled, etc. So if you're in a hurry and you really want to try a particular thing, try to catch them before or after the rush. Second, it is an open air space, so keep an eye on the weather. Some days it will be pleasant to sit around (this is San Diego after all), but if it is cold and windy or rainy you might just want to grab a coffee and snack to go. They do have heaters but these can only help so much.
