Despite the current predilection with meal bowls, you can just call me old-school because I need the comfort of a salad bar option near the office. I can't grab something at Amazon Go every day, can I? The salad bar is the centerpiece of this cafe, and the owner snapped at me for trying to take a photo of it. I'm not sure why because while there was quite a few options on the counter, there wasn't anything I would consider exclusively unique. It was a salad bar that you would've seen at the Sizzler during the Clinton years. I try to restrict myself to the raw vegetables, but an occasional spoonful of mayo-saturated chicken salad or a hard-boiled egg may sneak onto my plate in a weak moment. You know I'm really having a bad day if I grab a chicken leg from the hot pot. At $8.45 per pound, it ain't a bad deal and if I hit $9, i know I've gone overboard (photo: There's rarely a crowd in here even during the lunch hour since this block of Jackson doesn't attract much foot traffic. And I can't help taking a photo because hey, I'm Japanese after all. FOOD - 3 stars...decent enough salad bar, nothing extraordinary AMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...well-kept SERVICE - 3 stars...polite after the photo fumble TOTAL - 3 stars...and here's my local salad option RELATED - Frustrated in the FiDi? Here's a collection of places I've tried and reviewed:

Super fresh food!! Highly recommended! You have a big variety of food you can choose from (from normal salad, to sushi, meat, fish etc). You pay per pound. Good prices for very healthy and tasty food!

Great cheap salad + hot food bar and the nicest owners.

The people were really nice, but I rate places mostly based on how I think their food is, and the Teriyaki sandwich I got was mediocre at best. There was hardly any teriyaki sauce on it and I had to ask for more. It was supposed to be a hot sandwich, but it turned out to be partially warm and partially cold... If you were expecting the teriyaki chicken to be like the ones you find in a bento box like I did, then you will be disappointed. I actually would have rated the sandwich 2 stars but the employees were nice and accommodating so that raised my rating of this place by one star. Still though, if they can make their teriyaki sandwiches like the ones that are at Vikings Subs like I was hoping for then I would love to come back.

No frills salad bar with coffee, sandwiches, pastries, and more. This is one of the more affordable spots when it comes to salad bars. I like the selection of toppings, including hard boiled eggs, crunchies, and a variety of salad dressings. The lettuce and spinach are abundant whenever I go. My favorite items are the spicy chicken, roasted veggies, caprese, and California rolls. There's an interesting mix of items that makes lunch interesting every time. Friendly staff as well!

I love this place. I sometimes come here for lunch. It's great for a quick bite or if you're craving a salad. Also come here sometimes for their bagels. I feel they're reasonably priced. Plus the people that work there are extremely kind.

Good value salad/food bar in Jackson Square. While the presentation of the food and interior leave something to be desired, the price, variety of items, and friendly service bump this place to a 3.5. You can dine in and grab a plate and tray, or to-go boxes. My favorites here are the spicy chicken, sushi (CA roll), roasted veggies and potatoes, caprese, and selection of crunchy toppings and dressings. I have not spent more than $7 for a plate of food, which is what I like most about Cafe Insalata! I also like their egg salad sandwich--very filling and fresh. Overall, a nice local cafe to grab lunch if you work in the area.
