We used to eat dinner here on our way to Davies Symphony Hall 15 years ago. We moved away and just came back this week for a mini vacation. We took a chance today and it was as delicious as ever. We had the chicken kebab plate and the lamb kebab plate and 2 cans of soda for $48. What a bargain. The food is fresh, healthy and plentiful. The flavors are wonderful and the service is very good. It’s clean and neat inside—truly a little gem.

My father had taken me to the SF Opera Ballet & afterwards invited me to his favorite, go-to place for dinner, Gyro King! I was a little skeptical, thinking of the fancier places near the SF War Memorial Opera House but upon entering, the gentleman working there warmly greeted my father whom he remembered. He was so helpful, attentive & kind. Answering questions, guiding us according to my food allergies, always patiently, and seemed happy to help us. The kebab is fresh, marinated and so fresh, it's raw waiting to be grilled over an actual charcoal/wood (?) grill. This is the real deal! So many choices and sides- buttery fresh pilaf, bulgur, baba ganoush, hummous, amazing fresh-baked bread and a must be tried dessert, ravina- farina sheet cake infused with a floral/fruity light syrup and sprinkling of shredded coconut. The best part? As my father and I relaxed and sunk into conversation, we heard a tune and realized it was an Armenian traditional melody sung by a soprano I think, which the gentleman had put on especially for us (Armenians). A little later, two hot steaming cups of tea appeared on our table. It is these little things, the kindness even beyond superb service. Who knew?! The place filled up and it was time for us to leave, tummies and hearts full. Do not be fooled, I'll leave the white tablecloth places and go where I know we'll have a rare, surprisingly unforgettable gem of a time, the regal Gyro King!

Stopped by at Gyro King for a quick lunch after a morning of working at the San Francisco Public Library. This location is literally right across the street from the library so it's very convenient. Pleasantly surprised to see that it was pretty busy inside, a good sign for a Tuesday at 1:30pm! It does have a bit of a deli/diner feel and is dark inside, but I didn't go for the vibes. I ordered a combo gyro plate online ahead of time (10% discount for online orders) and went in the restaurant to eat. The container was packed full with rice, lentils, salad, and chicken + lamb/beef. It also came with a small container of spicy sauce and tzatziki. I really enjoyed the flavor of the salad, which was nice and tart with red cabbage. Rice and lentils were also good. Meat was a bit dry and didn't taste as fresh or flavorful as other places I've had, but it was not terrible. I really enjoyed the homemade pita bread. Overall for ~$20 I had a huge meal that could have easily been two meals if I wasn't so hungry. Super friendly and quick service as well.

Great dishes. The kabobs are very tasty because of the marinade and slow grilling. The baba ghanoush is delicious. The desert dishes are all great. Try the Bougatsa.. honey and pistachio desert. The owner is very pleasant to chat with and at times will offer you some house tea. The cafe is next to the Orpheuem theatre on Market and Larkin. The cafe is really worth the time and money.

We have been coming here for many years stopping by before we go to the symphony - it is a hole-in-the-wall, but the food is consistently good - and very vegetarian-friendly. The food is Turkish, which means that the pita bread is not what you get in other places - but tastes excellent. The vegetarian platter is our usual go-to - and we were there just recently - and enjoyed ourselves. Even got some dolma to go. The spanakopita is not what I expected - since it does not have phyllo dough. I enjoyed the one at Gyro King, but prefer the other version more. The service is fast and friendly - which is what one wants when going to a show next. All in all, we will continue to go back.

I had been going to the Gyro King under the old management and loved it. I went there at least once a week. Nothing fancy, but it was just good quality food, fresh salads, and consistent. However, since the new owner took over a year ago, the food is awful, almost inedible. The owner charges extra for any changes. I ordered something I used to order all the time, and they gave me the wrong item and then tried to convince me that the two items were the same. Apparently, I knew the menu better than the new owner. Chicken wrap had fat and rubbery skin inside and was awful, along with raw onions. I order lamb and it smelled rancid and had too much fat it in. Salads are now with not fresh ingredients and are disgusting. I have given them a full year and 5 visits to get it right, and they got it wrong every time. I won't go there again.

Wonderful place, wonderful atmosphere. The owner is such a nice caring person. They really treat you like family-- would recommend anybody to come and eat their delicious food!!!

I ordered the chicken kebab with rice for delivery. The chicken tasted ok, but dry. They give you a salad but drown it in dressing. Next time I get it, I will ask them to hold the dressing.
