Ok gluten free patisserie eatery. Low to average gluten free texture. Thankfully we've come a long way globally on the gluten free front and gf patisserie goods are far better than those served up here.FOOD: The taste of foods are good to ok. We ordered over 12 varied items - so this review is rather holistic. The textures ranged from ok to terrible. Most were overly crumbly and/or oily. We're used to Australian gluten free patisseries and cafe standards where a gluten free croissant or danish is indistinguishable from a gluten containing one. Coeliac bakeries back home have breads and cakes that are stretchy and soft or crispy and flaky - at Mariposa it's the old-school crumbly or hard, noticeably gluten free. pastries that I thought we'd well and truly mastered beyond. Wouldn't go back to - however not beyond eating - just not fantastic. They do have a broad range of goods which was really nice to see and here's hoping with some pastry chef expertise and training their food standards improve.STAFF: Not overly friendly or communicative. Seem to dislike their jobs and have zero passion in the food they provide which was rather sad and disappointing.ACCESSIBILITY: Well positioned minutes from taxi stands, bus stops, ferry routes and bike pathways. Wheelchair and pram, walker accessible. Toilets are a minute or so walk away around the corner.INTERIOR: Set within the gorgeous market building - their displays are great, clear and inviting. Premises seem to be clean and well kept and they have great clear signage on what's including nuts, dairy etc which is very useful.OVERALL: Ok by North American gluten free food standards. Wouldn't be back, I can see why so many coeliacs make Australia home.

I still give this place five stars for their gluten free baked goods and take home lasagna but overall four stars because their service still sucks most of the time. I went by here recently on a Sunday morning before a meeting to grab something hot to eat. I love their hot pockets. However, it was 9:30 am. A number of people around me and I started to form a line. Some people asked the staff questions about the pastries and they answered while putting stuff out. None of the staff thought to tell us that they didn't open until 10 am on Sundays. After about 5 minutes of being ignored, I saw the small sign for their hours. I pointed it out to others and we all left. That was a horrible experience as I was hungry and now didn't have time to get something else before my meeting. On Pi Day, I came by and was pleased they had a number of pies available in different sizes. I picked up a small Chocolate Pie that was low in sugar and a small Cherry Pie. They were the perfect size for the three of us though they could have fed more people. We didn't finish the pies ourselves. The Chocolate Pie was yummy and perfect for me but my husband said it wasn't sweet enough for him. We all loved the Cherry Pie! We went back recently and picked up their pizza dough. It came with two rounds. They were awesome!!! We put on our own toppings and popped them into the oven. They came out delicious. I love their food. I just wish the service was better.

Closing time: 4pm. I walk up to the counter at 4:02pm and the associate says, "Sorry, we're closed," as she's wrapping pastries. As a bartender, I thought to myself, "Damn girl, you're not selling liquor! Are you putting Mariposa's baking license in jeopardy by selling a baguette after 4pm?!?

On the pricey side, not gonna lie, but I emailed ahead of time for a friend who is celiac AND cannot handle xanthan gum nor guar gum. Eileen emailed me a list of products which were safe for my friend to have and it was kind of a bucket list moment to take her and buy her something. I'd thought of her in 2013 when I first saw the bakery and then every time after that. So here we got to go together in 2024! The list of gum-free products: Banana Muffins Pumpkin Muffins Coconut lemon square Crumb Cake Almond Horn Coconut pecan macaroons I didn't catch her name but the beautiful young Black woman managing the till was also really helpful in flipping around the product label for muffins to double-check (because this was a chocolate chip version), and knew exactly where the things on our list were. (4 stars since I haven't tried anything yet but upgradeable once I find out.)

Mariposa offers a wide variety of gluten free items ranging from incredibly savory bacon cheese swirl to sweet bakery items. You’d never know items were allergen free. The taste and texture are to die for!!! The shop is located in the historic Ferry Building which offers artisan and local products. Highly recommend trying Mariposa.Dietary restrictions: Gluten and Soy

Mariposa Baking Company is truly a gem of a find for those seeking gluten-free options, with additional choices catering to dairy-free and vegan preferences. My experience at Mariposa left me pleasantly surprised, with a variety of tempting offerings to choose from. I indulged in the Fig Jam & Goat Cheese Toast, and it was nothing short of heavenly. The combination of flavors was delightful, and the gluten-free toast provided a perfect canvas for the rich and creamy goat cheese complemented by the sweet fig jam. However, my husband's experience with the Bacon & Egg Breakfast Sandwich fell a bit short of expectations. Despite requesting it without cheese, tomatoes, or chipotle mayo, it arrived with mayo, which he dislikes, and the bread wasn't toasted, resulting in a somewhat mushy texture. This made it challenging to eat without utensils. I regretted not trying the Curried Empanada, as it sounded intriguing and likely would have been a delicious choice. In addition to our main selections, we sampled some penguin cupcakes, which were enjoyable, and my husband particularly praised the excellent quality of the pretzel and the taste of the rye bread. The dinner rolls reminded us of the Scharr round loaves, and the sandwich bread held up well.

It's so exciting to find dedicated gluten free bakeries, and I was overwhelmed with all the choices! I really wanted to try everything but I settled on sharing a croissant, cinnamon roll, and berry apple hand pie. The croissant and cinnamon roll were fantastic. I think this was my first croissant in over 20 years, and it was a treat. If you are not into overly sweet desserts, then the hand pie might be for you. It was NOT bad, but I did not find it to be as delicious as the croissant or cinnamon roll.

My husband and I spent a long weekend in San Francisco. I was super excited to try some of the gluten free places, with Mariposa baking at the top of my list. We had breakfast sandwiches for our first go. I had mine on a croissant, my husband's was on the sandwich bread. Both were fantastic. So fantastic that we came back the next day to pick up some other items to take home with us. We tried the spinach and cheese raviolis, cinnamon roll, a couple of other pastries, carrot cake, and a loaf of bread. All were fantastic!! The sandwich bread is so good, it will be my go to for bread from now on. What a fabulous find!
