I went for dinner, the restaurant was quiet when I got there but got busy when I was there. Food is AMAZING and the service was great. There were only 2 to guys working, but they were well organized looking after customers. One of them even brought me a fork (I'm white, so I got a chuckle out of this, as I am not the clientele they are used to). I don't get the option to have laksa very often in America, but was overjoyed for the opportunity and experience, though will say I was quite jealous of the beautiful whole fish the table next to me got, will remember that for the next time I'm in SF!

The skewers are delicious, and the portions of other orders are sufficient.

You're Worth it

I've lived in Malaysia for three years and tasted the flavors of the cuddles. Penand does not represent Malaysian flavors at all.The ambient is loud since guests tend to speak loud at this restaurant. The waiter is rushing us to order and quick with our food. So, we didn't feel comfortable eating peacefully as the concept of rushing you in and rushing you out is the service here.We ordered fish head curry, belacan Kang Kung, hainanese chicken and bak kut teh soup. The fish head curry was top gritty and thick which means the chef didn't cook the curry powder long enough to release the flavor and softened the powder. It did not cook with coconut cream. Hence, the flavor isn't there. The curry did come with eggplant, tofu and potato which is unusual for traditional fish head curry. The Kang Kung was far from flavorful. Tasteless and lack of belacan which is shrimp paste. Disappointing! The hainanese chicken texture was rough and dry. The true texture should be silky smooth tender and moist. Another disappointment! The bak Kung teh which is a traditional ribs soup was alright. Instead if ribs, they used chunks of pork. The 4 dishes and 3 bowls of rice ($2 each) Total to $157!!Judge for yourself. I will not go back neither will I recommend to friends and families. Please "like" if the information is helpful.

The most popular dish is the Hainan chicken. Very good price $30 for whole chicken. Another good dish is the charcoal grill pork chop. Juicy and tender thin slice of favorable pork.

This seemed like a Thai-inspired Chinese restaurant, but the food was really good. The eggplant was silky and flavorful, the pineapple rice with shrimp was nice, a little bland though, the Mee Siam with chicken was very well seasoned, not too spicy.

The sizzling seafood always the bomb. We had Tom yum soup that was spicy, without coconut milk, and differently spiced than Thai style. I had not had this style before that I thought was delicious too. The chicken fried rice was quite good with the sizzling seafood but may have been a bit bland on its own. The service is very fast, starting with peanuts and tea. It's a good place for big groups given the space and speed of service.

It's a 3.5 star for me! This place is quite unique in Chinatown because it serves Malaysian food -- I don't think there are a lot of Malaysian food in the area. I also learned that Penang is a state in Malaysia!Food: 4/5. We got a variety of food from soup to small dishes. The food is decent and delicious! Price is decent, around ~$18 per dish. - Bak kut teh: delicious soup!! I'm so glad we ordered it. One of the best dishes, the umami soup with a hint of bitterness just hits right for me. There's also some pork belly and meats in the soup. - Pork chop: meaty, honey glazed pork chop, super tender and melts in my mouth. - Nasi lemak: pretty averageThey gave us a free dessert soup at the end! Delicious purple rice dessert. Service: 3/5. They are kinda under staffed and it was hard to make an order. The food however came out really quickly! The restaurant is quite big, they have several big tables that are already reserved. We were able to get in quite easily for a small table.

Nice ambiance, cute (fake?) tree in the middle of the dining room. Food was pretty good. Favorites were the special Malaysian coffee short ribs and curry fish head hot pot. Service was friendly, a little slow but might be because they were short staffed.
