Outstanding spot for those looking to find excellent quality food in a little more of a quiet and easy going spot. Angel, the Chef brought out our meals, on this first visit I tried out the Wagyu Braised Short Rib, just do it, if you like short Ribs these are prepared beautifully. So tender, plated with a “potato pancake” like none I have had before, very deep flavor in the potato's after soaking in a bit of the sauce from the ribs. Also tried the Garlic bread, healthy portion and very tasty! My wife had the Radicchio Salas with steak, again prepared perfectly, loved both dishes! Our waiter, Chris was really cool, great recommendations and pointed us to a couple of great desserts, Flan and a fried banana dish that resembled a hush puppy with salted caramel sauce and fruit compote. Both were very good, Flan was the star for me. Highly recommend this place, food is off the charts wonderful, inside the Viceroy hotel, which is well worth a look the next time we stay in Santa Monica. I highly recommend Sugar Palm!

This review is for dining inside and I imagine that dining outside would have a better atmosphere. Overall this is a pricey hotel lobby restaurant with ok food and slow service. It would be great for a quick lunch meeting spot but not for anything more than that.

This was the 2nd worst dining experience of my life . I chose this place for my friends and son and we've done this many times for holidays. I was completely embarrassed . First , no stemmed wine glasses; I had to ask the waiter 3 times for a decanter because my buddy and I brought bottles costing more than $100 ea. He apparently know what a decanter was. It took forever (1/2 hr.) to get menus and then we were informed the kitchen would be closing soon. The prix fixe menu was $145, not cheap. We opted for that . I got the quinoa salad which was loaded with sugar ! Gross ! An older man gave our waiter a tutorial on the spot about decanting and my friend rustled up some actual wine glasses. Everything took forever and most things were inedible , particularly the desserts : absolutely terrible. They should close this place down and completely rework the menu if they want to charge ANYTHING for this crap. My friend had to track down the waiter to pay the check and if I'd been with him I would've insisted on a 50% reduction. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE !

Will never go back! Somehow found out online that this restaurant carries menu for dogs and would love to take my puppy to try. I also called ahead to confirm if they carry dog menu and Clau-dia responded and confirmed that they do in fact have a menu for dogs. And so we made a trip excited, so was our dog!!! The restaurant was quite empty on a holiday week but that's ok. We got seated but as I only saw regular menu and not a dog menu, we asked the server for a dog menu.. he looked at me with surprising eyes then said they do not serve dog menu and in fact they stopped serving dog menu 2yrs ago!!!! Whow that was very confusing and surprising...not to mention DEPRESSING! We took a trip all the way to this restaurant, excited, and we even did our due diligence by calling ahead to the restuarant to confirm if they serve dog menu. What have employees been doing at this hotel restaurant? Absolutely ridiculous, not to mention the laziness, absolutely zero communications (how can the dog menu be discontinued 2yrs ago yet an employee did know!!!!!!), poorly managed! We had to leave immediately...ruined our day

The atmosphere is great during the day and night. CUTE, CUTE, CUTE! Service is SUPERB! Friendly Staff! However, the food was a hit or miss. For the price I expected good taste and texture, but flavors clash and the pizza taste and feels like a frozen microwaveable. Chef is lacking.

Didn't know that this place was inside a hotel...we booked for a 12:45pm brunch and there was just us and a couple seated at the other end of the table. Food was fantastic, had the dutch baby, chicken and waffle, and the prosciutto flatbread.

Was in the LA area for business and decided to go to Santa Monica for a morning walk and breakfast. Sugar Palm did not disappoint. It is inside a hotel right across from the beach- near the pier. Service was excellent- very attentive staff and you cannot go wrong with a “Dutch Baby” I was pleasantly surprised to see this gem on the menu and it’s a five star for sure. The outside patio looks very inviting, it was a cool over-cast morning, so we dined inside. Parking on premises is available or grab a spot on the street behind the hotel, if the beach spots are taken.

The breakfast is really good- nice portions and delicious. We also had a dinner that was creative and delicious. Would highly recommend, the decor is very nice mid century with ample outdoor seating in a secluded courtyard. Many great vegan options btw!Vegetarian options: Vegan options were great!Dietary restrictions: Menu was marked for vegan, gf, and with many options not just a salad

My wife and I ate here the Friday after Thanksgiving. We enjoyed dinner. The appeal of the place was outdoor seating that would accommodate our dog. It also was an easy walk from our hotel. I was surprised at how crowded it was for the holiday weekend. I guess more people travel to a destination than I had realized. Some were families. My assumption had been almost all who have relations would spend this quintessential American celebration with them, regardless of whether they like one another or not. Many like to head to a hotel and a beach, not a cousin's home. We ate early. It was quiet. The waiters, a pair, remarked on how busy it had been the night before. That would have been for folks foregoing turkey and stuffing and gravy. We split two dishes. The radicchio salad with figs was sizable. You could have made it a starter for a table of four. I always appreciate a good salad. The dressing was light. The quality was acceptable for the season. California is so much better than the east coast in this regard; my wife lives in the former, and I reside in the latter. The scallops over risotto were plump. The seasoning was a bit spicy to me and more so for my wife. It was not overpowering. It was simple. I would not have liked it as much if I had only the one flavor. But it was fine shared and with the contrast of the starter. The pair of servers were coordinated and each personable. They ignored the dog. She was happy to sit on her own chair and watch. I was satiated, prepared for a half marathon the next morning.

So this might be one of the the best breakfasts I've ever had! I wish I had taken a photo.I always order my eggs the same - over easy, with bacon, potatoes and sourdough toast. These eggs were so fresh, I could tell by the color right away. They looked and tasted like they were from chickens that live in the backyard! But of course they weren't because this is a hotel restaurant on Ocean Avenue. The potatoes were cooked perfectly and so was the bacon. Chef Jason does an excellent job and I learned that they get their food from a local farmers market. So it is all fresh and local, and I would definitely return!Great service too! Today, with such high prices to eat out, it's satisfying to find a local restaurant with outdoor seating, great service and fresh local food, prepared perfectly.

Stayed at the Vicerory Santa Monica and really enjoyed having the Sugar Palm as a bar/restaurant right in our hotel! Ate outside in the back for brunch and it the ambiance & decor was SO cute & picturesque for a California summer vaca! Had the breakfast burrito & the fact that it came with a salad surprised us & made us feel really healthy at 11am (lol!) Service was kinda slow, but luckily we weren't in a rush so didn't mind it. We came back in the afternoon after a long summer walk and had the best tacos & margaritas!
