The grandma of all the beach boutique hotels and still to my mind the best. Restaurant patio is always lovely, quiet, good food. It's pricey but then consider the location. Parking is Valet and not cheap but these days all beach hotels charge a lot. And there's ample nearby street parking if you're coming for lunch. Forget Venice... Shutters is worth the upcharge.

It's worth every cent. We stayed here for my sister in laws wedding. The turn down service is impeccable and the cleaning service is what dreams are made of. Expect to spend like a celebrity and get treated like one! The shop keeper by the elevator was so kind to my toddler and suggested the best activities and coloring supplies to keep her busy. The staff is so accommodating and friendly without seeming snooty and pedantic. Surprisingly the beach was pretty clean and tranquil. We had a blast!

Upscale, on the beach atmosphere. Excellent food. And friendly waiting staff. What's not to like?

Wow, the waiter at the hotel lobby bar was very rude to my party and tried to charge us for hot water for a second steeping of tea! We suspect it was either due to racial profiling or maybe this hotel is greedy and he was just trying to follow unwritten policy. Regardless it's not a good look for this business and I've added it to my shit list. My bf, my parents, and I were at the hotel lobby bar late on a Friday night (March 1st) and the waiter (tall blonde gentleman with glasses) was rude to us and told us he would have to charge us for extra hot water on pots of tea we ordered. My parents were visiting me from out of town and wanted to see Santa Monica pier at night. They got unlucky with the rainy cold weather this week. We drove two cars here and valeted at this hotel because it was hard to find parking anywhere else. Upon dropping off our cars, the valet folks invited us to get a drink at the lounge bar to receive a parking validation for slightly discounted parking. After our walk, around 10:30pm since the bar was still open and it was cold and rainy outside we decided to take them up on the offer and stopped by the lobby bar to get something warm to drink. We didn't want alcohol or caffeine so we ordered herbal tea. Between the 4 of us we ordered 3 mint teas for $8 each and one cup of hot water. My parents are immigrants and it's a cultural habit for elderly Chinese people to drink only hot liquids (no ice). They didn't want to catch a cold and my dad thought the teas were caffeinated so he just ordered hot water. We received 3 personal pots of loose leaf tea when I was expecting tea bags. I was delighted the mint tea was actually pretty good quality loose leaf (Art of Tea brand) and even came with little jars of honey on the side. We convinced my dad to try some because it was so good and caffeine free and ended up adding the cup of hot water he got to one of the pots so he could try it. We didn't think anything of it or realize this was supposedly "inappropriate" to add more water to reuse our tea. When the waiter came back around, I asked for more hot water for my pot since tea leaves can be re-used multiple times and we were given a lot of tea leaves per pot. It was strong enough for another brew. To my surprise, the waiter said he was going to have to charge us for a 4th tea just to give us more hot water because we only ordered 3 teas and my dad was only supposed to drink plain water. He made it seem like we were trying to cheat the restaurant out of $8 of tea and lied to him about it by only ordering for 3 instead of 4. If the waiter had been apologetic and explained that the bar doesn't allow sharing tea pots, and we all would have to get our own, I would have maybe been more understanding but that's not what he or the menu said. He also didn't ask us to buy another pot with fresh leaves but just said he would have to charge us more just for more plain water. I can't help but think that the waiter was being prejudice towards us for being not so well dressed Asian people in a "fancy" hotel bar. He probably thought we were deliberately being "cheap" or were poor, low class or something, and assumed he wasn't going to get any good tip from us. We also saw the server being chatty and friendly with other folks in the lounge (who were "coincidentally" Caucasian) and chatting them up but with us he was curt. Even if the waiter wasn't being racist or prejudice, charging money for hot water to reuse loose leaf tea and insisting we can't reuse tea leaves we paid for is just the dumbest thing I've ever heard. What shitty pretentious service if that is your hotel's rule and what a royal waste of perfectly good tea? I'm being nice by giving this place 2 stars because the valet folks were nice and also lent us umbrellas for our walk but this Shutters hotel is now on my shit list because of this incident! What kind of bs luxury hotel is this? So Asians or under dressed tourists aren't welcome or a

I am beyond appalled at the fact that this establishment would not honor a doctor's note!!! Not refunding someone's money who is unable to travel due to a medical condition is unconscionable. I'll pass...

This hotel was disrespectful and rude beyond belief. I called to say that I could not stay due to a doctor's order to not travel and offered to give a doctor's note. The said that, "Although you are in the cancellation window, the best we can do is offer you another night." I explained that I never heard anything like that due to a medical reason and people were laughing in the background. I launched a formal complaint and the mediator stated that this made even her mad. You wonder how people like this can stay in business. What a lame excuse. No apology for not listening to an MD. Boy, I would be thinking liability if I were running this business, but, oh wait...I guess pissing your customers off is one way to go.

What an amazing meal overlooking the Santa monica Bay and the bike path. We were lucky enough to sit outside and have a great lunch. We started with the seafood tower that was so fresh, perfectly cold and delicious! The muscles were some of the best I have ever had. I had the wagyu burger (without the bun) and it was fantastic. Perfectly cooked, and so tasty. I asked for it on the rarer side, and it came just as ordered! It was fresh, tender and juicy. I can't wait to go back for the burger. Wagyu makes a huge difference in flavor. My husband had the half rotisserie chicken which was also amazing. It may have been marinated, since the chicken fell right off the bone. Another great choice! We loved everything about this gem of a restaurant that encompasses the pulse of Santa Monica. Great people watching, music listening, and superior food and menu. Looking forward to our next meal and visit!

Bliss on the beach. I've come here for birthdays, events and celebrations, but my fav is when I come to just sit and write with a warm cup of coffee. The food is well picked and prepared here and that you will pay for. Is the Surf Breakfast of 2 eggs, potatoes, bacon, toast, juice and coffee for $42 worth it? I think so because it comes with an amazing beachfront view. That's what you're really paying for. So eat here and then spend the day walking on the path or baking in the sun. The best of So Cal experience.

I would recommend Shutters for the location and a glass of wine! Other than that all the seafood is farm-raised and my over cooked wagyu burger had tons of tendon pieces! Stick to the salad if you must eat here!!

Ordered the halibut and it was delicious. I loved the sides- we got shoshito peppers + corn and also the butternut squash. The squash could have been seasoned better but the sauce they brought us made up for that. The truffle aioli was my favorite. Cocktails were excellent. There are some sweeter mixed drinks on the menu- we chose to order them for dessert.
