The Getaway Cafe is a small restaurant, serving breakfast and lunch, tucked in the woods off U.S. Highway 50 in Meyers, CA, in the Lake Tahoe basin. The restaurant advertises "alpine comfort cuisine" and has been voted as Lake Tahoe's best breakfast and lunch restaurant. The dining room is fairly small, comfortable, rustic and was very warm, thanks to the fireplace. As the restaurant has achieved a reputation for amazing cuisine, the dining room fills up quickly. The atmosphere is warm and friendly. You'll be seated and given a menu, and the friendly staff will treat you like family. From the "Best of the Best" section of the breakfast menu, I went with "The Morning After." Now... that was appropriate, as I'd been up since 04:00 on this Thursday morning. The menu describes this fine breakfast as, "One biscuit topped with two eggs and homemade sausage gravy, with your choice of bacon or sausage links; served with your choice of potatoes. Of course I went with hash browns for my choice of potatoes. Eggs are fried your way, and I went with sunnyside up, as eggs fried that way work well with hash brown potatoes and gravy. I chose sausage links over bacon. Oh yeah! The meal began with a large fresh, in-house baked biscuit, covered in some of the best sausage gravy in El Dorado County or wherever. The menu advertises "one" biscuit, but the "one" biscuit was large and simply did the job. The biscuit was covered with country gravy, two fried eggs were on top of the biscuit, and most of the eggs were covered in gravy. The gravy was thick, rich, seasoned with pepper, and had lots of chunks of sausage. Topping the biscuit and the eggs... this was simply an "oh my" moment! And the hash brown potatoes... I'm still thinking about them as they were as good as it gets. The hash browns were deep fried to a perfect, golden brown on the outside, and white, tender and chewy inside. I loved the amazing crispy outside, that boasted a great "crunch," and the tender inside. The chef has talent, as these hash brown potatoes are the breakfast potatoes that "foodies" dream about. Two links of sausage complimented the meal and helped to make this "The Morning After" breakfast delicious. I simply LOVED this amazing breakfast! All I can say is when you're in the Lake Tahoe Basin, and you're interested in an amazing breakfast The Getaway Cafe should be on your menu. I can't judge what is the best breakfast in the Lake Tahoe area... but I CAN say that the friendly service, the alpine atmosphere and "The Morning After" breakfast I enjoyed not only made my morning, but it made my entire day. When you're in Meyers, CA, and you're looking for an amazing breakfast or lunch, check out The Getaway Cafe. You'll love this fine alpine diner.

I was so excited to try this spot after seeing the ratings here on Yelp. Last time we came in October the wait was more than 90 minutes and the parking lot was full. This time we came on a Thursday and had a very short wait. Despite the great service, I left pretty unsatisfied. Unfortunately, I now have concluded that this spot has benefited from a particular kind of diner. First, the place is small. I love that. But the group of 8 adults and four children took up the majority of the place. I feel like groups of 6 are about the max this place can handle (or should allow). Second, the items I ordered were not good. -"corned" beef hash: not at all corned beef. More like pot roast hash with a TON of chili powder/paprika/taco seasoning. As someone with a pepper allergy, it wasn't spicy but it did make me feel ill the rest of the day with massive indigestion. Served with a slice of hash browns that are rock hard outside and mushy inside. -Chillaquilles: I think that modern self-proclaimed "foodies" love spice... and by spice I don't mean depth of flavor created by spices. I mean heat from chilis. That was all this dish had. My wife did not enjoy the dish (she is from Mexico, btw). We both felt bad and had gastro problems over the next 24+ hours Lastly, the prices are outrageous. In a world where places are running $12-14 lunch specials, why pay $18-30 for breakfast? What happened to the days when if breakfast was X, the. Lunch was 1.5x and dinner was 2x. I could literally get steak and eggs for $25 most places. Here it's fancy French Toast for $24. Maybe we just chose poorly. Honestly, if I had to do it again I'd have tried the French Toast Combo for around $18 (2 pieces with 2 eggs, and 2 bacon). At least it might have had flavor (syrup?). I can see the charm of this place but have to say it was one of the worst breakfasts I've had in a long time and by far the worst I've had in SLT after years of visiting 2-3 times a year.

Best eggs benedict I've ever had (I got the deluxe one). Partner got the sriracha fried chicken special. Way exceeded expectations. And GREAT service. Can't wait to come back!

We live 5 minutes away and we’ve been here several times. Prices and portions are great. Food has ALWAYS been good and staff is sweet and remembers my son’s order. Cute cabin atmosphere. One of our favorite local spots.

My fiance and I came here for the first time a couple of days ago after reading all of the positive reviews here on Yelp. I've listed the pros and cons of our visit down below and I've also included photos of the menu and of our food. Pros: - the food was delicious, fresh, and served quickly - the owner Diane was very welcoming and kind towards all of her customers. she made us feel right at home. - only a short 10 minute wait time during our visit Cons: - the parking lot is small and complicated especially during morning/brunch rush hours. the businesses nextdoor do not allow you to park there so time your visit accordingly. - the cafe itself is tiny and overwhelming when it's busy, the seating options felt very cramped next to one another. if you have anxiety like myself, you'll find yourself feeling very overstimulated. - our waitress "Rose" (according to our bill), left our visit feeling a little awkward. we didn't feel very welcomed by her and the interactions we had felt a little forced. that being said, i doubt it was intentional. maybe we just came at a bad time? she was nice otherwise. she was wearing a beanie, had colored eyes, and light brown hair. Food: - i ordered the veggie benedict ($19.95) it includes: 2 poached eggs on a toasted english muffin with avocado, sauteed tomatoes, onions and spinach; topped with hollandaise. i ordered mine with "home fries" which included potatoes, bell peppers, and onions. i finished my entire plate :) - my fiancé ordered the maple bacon glazed french toast ($24.95). this dish is considered one of their top sellers and understandably so. it includes: thick-sliced sourdough, griddled and topped with their coconut milk-based organic maple glaze, and 4 chopped strips of bacon. my fiance let me try a bite and it was so yummy :) it's very sweet and filling. Service: - as mentioned above, the owner Diane is such a sweetheart. she welcomed us in with a bright smile and open arms, it felt like visiting a family member's house. during our visit we witnessed her connecting with all of her customers, making sure everyone was taken care of. it's clear she cares about her business and her customers. we appreciated her hospitality. - i did not catch the name of the young woman who had what seemed like a southern accent (?), but she was very kind and welcoming towards us when delivering our food to our table. Tips for future guests: - plan to come before or after known rush hours to avoid the stress of finding parking. - keep in mind the size and noise of the cafe, in case you have children or someone that is easily overstimulated. Thank you Diane, we look forward to visiting again the next time we come to Tahoe. Wishing you the best with your business :)

Good little place to stop on the way outta SLT. Just past the bug station on the right. Indoors in the off season, there's outdoor seating in the summer. Food is done perfect by the kitchen and the service is super friendly.I had a beef sandwich that was very good and meaty and my friend had a chicken on some sort of salad. The indoor dining is cozy and a little crowded at times. best to try tp arrive on off hours mid week.

Had to try a cafe so highly rated and was not disappointed. We felt bad as we walked in during their last hour but we were welcomed with a smile and warm cup of coffee. Food was spot on. Not a bad dish on the table. Cute little place, worth the drive from Tahoe.

Simply WOW! Spending a few days in Lake Tahoe and not having breakfast or brunch at this place is truly a waste. The food is incredibly DELICIOUS, with generous portions and perfect cooking temperatures. From Burritos to French toast to Eggs Benedict, my visit was a delightful culinary journey. The service is really good; the place gets busy, but they manage a waiting list efficiently, respecting and calling you when it's your turn. I loved that, very organized and punctual. The ambiance is welcoming; it's a small place, but you feel the warmth in every corner. Without a doubt, every time I visit Lake Tahoe, I'll make a sure stop here. Thanks to the team for all your attentiveness

I'll just add another 5 star Driving to Tahoe from Sacramento, we thought let's have breakfast on our way. We rolled in 16 deep! Seated within 10 mins. Can't beat the outdoor seating, among the trees and warm sun! There were many other people eating outside. Indoors are small and limited seating. Single bathroom but clean. Service is excellent - staff was not intimidated by our large group and quickly seated us at three different tables and rotated between all the tables, checking on us multiple times to make sure we had what we needed and that we were enjoying our food. Coconut French toast - is light and sweet and shareable Mimosa served with 3 juices is a must! We had many other things but this was some time ago and do not remember the names. It was all delish, no food left behind haha It's memorable and I can't wait to go back.

We had the best breakfast with our party of 10. Service was fantastic! The food was amazing. Very large portions. We were seated within 20 minutes on a Saturday in July in Lake Tahoe. We highly recommend this
