Honestly it’s overrated/overhyped … ordered some mariscos they were old and pupusas are thrash the ones on MacArthur park are better. I mean only cool thing is that chef comes and greets but other than that Expect to spend over $200 for a group of 4.. might as well hit CatchLA or Nobu they charge the same but food and view is worth it

This restaurant has so much potential but is lacking in certain areas. First off, the establishment is located in the ghetto. The theme inside is almost of a night club with loud music so if you're looking for a calm place to sit, this might not be it. Certain things are outdated and seems a little tacky. The food was good; nothing extraordinary. The prices on the menu were very unreasonable.. I mean ridiculous. Customer service is decent. The chef comes out to greet everyone and customers seemed to like that. I could care less. The place wasn't too busy which is probably due to all these issues. I got a ghetto Hispanic restaurant vibe at this place. Like I said, it's got lots of potential but as long as these issues aren't addressed, I don't see this restaurant flourishing.

We got there and no one greeted us until we walked in, after we ordered one hour passed and they never brought our food. We were told it was going to take another 10 minutos, 20 minutes later we decided to leave. I will never come back to this place, this was our second time we try to eat there, the first time, the greeter told us there was a long wait, so we left.

This place is a vibe!! Came here and was wowed!!! The food is bomb! I got the molcajete and it was amazing. The flavor!!! And it's huge. During this pandemic I'm really sceptical about where I spend my money and this place was worth every penny. The flavors! The atmosphere. They did take a little long .. but I know why .... It's because of the details and attention and care they put in your food! Delicious! Did not expect that ! Come you wont regret it

Im giving it 4 stars because of the parking. Place inside is really nice and clean but the outside or the area around is not that nice looking. The prices are pretty high but the food is worth it it's very different from other salvadorean restaurants. The service is superb!!! I highly recommend!!

Man , finally a Salvy restaurant wroth the price , my children had pupusas they loved them they said, " it's like grandma" non greasy. We had the creamy sea food soup, delicious also Los frescos naturally made luv it. The only down side the pizzas were not available but for sure coming back for them. Walking out I notice they had liquor of lorroco I just drove back the next day to get myself a bottle. Luv its a Salvadoreno own business and the quality of food is above my expectations

Horrible Service all around. Over a hour wait for our food. The hype is way bigger than the restaurant. Prices are very high compared to similar restaurants in the area, even compared to some high end restaurants. The pupusas are not that good and the curtido was very salty. I had very high expectations for this restaurant, but I have to say that I'm very disappointed specially on the service. Families walked out while we waited for our food due to bad service. If you go to El Amateco expect to spend well over $200 for a group of 4 if you order some of the top dishes, which is ok if the service represents the prices they are charging, but it's not the case at El Amateco. I like the story, but definitely it's over hyped and overpriced based on the level of the food and service.

Ok, where do I start? First what's first, location, location, location. The restaurant is nice inside but Vanowen and Van Nuys is a just a bad area plus horrible parking situation. But, let's not get ahead of ourselves. So, the menu prices posted here on YELP, are no longer the reality. The prices have nearly double or more in a year spam. So beware and expect to pay twice or more for the favorite dishes. Prices are in the top tier restaurants level, without the top tier level of service, in fact poor service all around. The pupusas are not good compared to other pupusas restaurants in the area, the curtido was very salty, and the chicharron was not blended properly. Some pupusas had long strings of chicharron, something that has not happened to me before. I'm all for supporting small businesses but you as the owner @elchefamateco have to keep it real. El Amateco definitely does not keep up to the hype. @elchefamateco needs to realize that in order to charge the prices he is charging; He needs to improve in little things such as service for starters. This will be my first and last time at this restaurant. Definitely one of the worst experiences I've had in a long time. While waiting for our food, 2 other families literally walked out of the place due to bad service. I would rather have an average looking plate that tastes delicious with good service, than an amazing looking plate that just tastes ok plus the horrible service. Oh, and let's not forget to add to the already ballooned prices the 4% surcharge if you pay with credit card. @elchefamateco I wish you the best. I'm salvadoreño just like you and these are my two cents.... Oh, Cumbia "El Cucu" kept playing over and over.
