I came in for an order from Florida. My GodMom raves about this bakery. I mailed her two dozen Portuguese rolls, she was very happy!

I love to go here b/c they use Boar's Head cold cuts. I always order ham & cheese either on a hero or Portuguese hard roll. Also, their cannolis are really delicious! Their prices are still very affordable as well. The women that work there are always very nice & try their best to get the line down. It is always super busy here. I always order to go b/c there's like one table there & it's always occupied. Inside is pretty small.

The atmosphere is amazing Portuges American culture at it’s best. Their rolls are sold state wide in grocery stores. Time makes a ? world of difference purchasing rolls the same day out the oven priceless. Bola de Rey dates back to early 1800 also known as kings bread. Bucket list.

Picked up a rich strawberry cheesecake at the last minute. It was really good and the price was not bad, in fact cheaper than most!My favorite pastry: Coconut Stick?

This place is a must. Fresh made Portuguese rolls are to die for. Well made sandwiches and a nice variety of danishes. Friendly service and reasonably priced.

Another gem ? (how do I keep getting lucky and finding these places?) Awesome sandwich options and the little custard pies are absolutely to die for. They're not too sweet and they're the perfect size. My bf has threatened to eat my share of what we purchased if I don't eat it, and he's not really into sweets like that, ?.

I've lived in Bridgeport for 4+ years now, and have come to understand that Chaves Bakery & Deli in Bridgeport is an institution. We were so excited to buy their homemade baked bread and custard tarts. However, when we arrived there were six people lined-up for service, and two people working frantically in the back -- one baking and the other preparing orders. We waited about 20 minutes for someone to appear at the counter, but to no avail, so we walked out. I suggest, Chaves Bakery & Deli, that you hire more staff and probably not pay them crap wages.

Honestly this chaves always has the best sandwiches out of the three. The staff are always friendly! Sometimes it can be a bit of a wait especially during lunch time so sometimes it's good to call in your order.

Chaves Bakery is a small chain of bakeries that opened in Bridgeport, Connecticut in 1979. It was founded by Portuguese immigrant John Chaves Sr. He immigrated to Connecticut from the Tras Montes region of Northern Portugal in the 1970s. He opened his first bakery, a small mom-and-pop business, in the center of Bridgeport in 1979. The bakery specialized in various types of breads as well as Portuguese, Italian and French-style pastries and cakes. Today the business is run by Chaves' son John Chaves Jr and his wife Marlene. In addition to their flagship location on State Street in Bridgeport, there are additional locations on Madison Avenue, East Main Street, and one in Fairfield. A fifth location was located in Monroe, but it has since closed. Locations in Shelton and Seymour were sold to Tony Branco (also a Portuguese immigrant) in 2013. The Chaves Family also owned the two Ambrosia Bakeries in Milford and Stratford, but they are now under new ownership. My wife and I recently stopped at the East Main Street location of Chaves Bakery & Deli in Bridgeport. We were visiting the nearby Beardsley Zoo with our son and were heading to visit some relatives afterwards. When we saw the bakery, we decided to stop by and get some pastries for our family visit. Not only does this location offer breads, cakes and pastries but also a full service deli with cold cuts. The whole place smelled amazing! We decided to order some cannoli, cream puffs, cinnamon sticks, and a Cookie Monster cupcake for our son. Everyone loved the pastries, especially our son who gobbled down his Cookie Monster cupcake (which was stuffed with an Oreo cookie). We look forward to trying out other Chaves Bakery locations in the future.
