I seem to be striking out with Pizza in the West Haven area. Not very flavorful, super crunchy black crust on my small pepperoni pizza, and the toppings less than generous on our large sausage and onion - famy was not thrilled about getting only a couple bits of sausage.

IF IT WEREN’T FOR ANGELICA..,You read that right! If it weren’t for Angelica the 10 of us would’ve walked out last night. We had a large group looking for a place that would welcome us despite not having reservations. Well.. we found this spot and met an ANGEL named Angelica. She welcomed us; told us our large group would be just fine. She started to rearrange the tables and we decided to help her because that’s what appreciative people do. The cook started yelling at us from the back. He was RUDE, HORRIBLE, UNREASONABLY HOSTILE AND RIDICULOUS! All because we were helping her. I wondered if he had an issue with a bunch of black people showing up unannounced..? I asked Angelica if he was the owner and she said yes. We were APPALLED!! THE OWNER WAS YELLING AT US?? I told her we won’t be putting money in his pocket. She begged us to stay. She told us her story and we felt compelled to let her do service recovery that the owner could take lessons from. We did. Angelica was the greatest!! We never would ever have stayed anyplace like this but.. IF IT WEREN’T FOR ANGELICA…Kid-friendliness: Mike yelled at our kids!

I love thin crust New Haven Style pizza but their pizza was way overcooked and not good. It is also overpriced.

I really wanted to like this place but it was a big disappointment. The pizza crust was light and crispy that was the positive. The sauce and meatball lacked any flavor at all. Unfortunately the same with the soup. I found myself adding tons of pepper to the pizza and salt to the soup. I also get this place has been around for a while but it doesn’t excuse the filth. It all made me question the sanitation standards in the kitchen! Ending on a positive note - our server was very sweet and did a great job!!

Gave it another try. My mistake. Place is filthier than ever before. Has a strange rogue odor. Waitresses are dumb bimbos. Might as well be self-serve. Now onto the food. Picked up a pizza. Brought it home. You be the judge. Even the dog walked away.

Spur of the moment decision to celebrate our son in law's police academy graduation ceremony we chose Mike's Apizza. delicious pizza, locally made soda and Donna, the waitress was friendly and humorous. Wish we lived nearby, I want to try all their pasta dishes.

We couldn't go to New Haven and not try an apizza! I'd never had one before and this was... interesting for sure. The restaurant was fairly empty when we went and we sat in the bar. The restaurant seemed super old school. This felt like a real neighborhood joint with regulars coming and going. The service was great, they even allowed us to order a half and half pizza with half being the clam (of course) and a red pizza with bacon. The pizza was crispy and tasty and unlike other pizzas I've had anywhere. I'm glad we tried it!

Nice local spot with laid back ambiance and prices. Good drinks, great pizza, nice Italian red sauce dishes. Nothing fancy and nobody wants it to be.

Andrew Buonocore was the first to come over to the United States from the Amalfi Coast of Italy in 1920. Andrew worked various labor jobs in New Haven and eventually opened his first pizzeria and pub on Grand Avenue in New Haven called Neapolitan which lasted from 1933-1935. Mike Buonocore, Andrew’s cousin, came over in 1923 from Italy and worked at the Royal Grand Tavern for one of his relatives from 1941 to 1947. Mike’s first restaurant was on Jefferson Street in New Haven. In 1946, Mike moved his wife and kids to Savin Rock in West Haven and started Mike’s Restaurant & Spaghetti House. This restaurant was located on Thomas Street (in front of the old subway on the corner of Capt. Thomas Blvd and Campbell Ave). Originally, it was a bakery with a coke-fired oven. In the mid-1960s, Savin Rock was literally dismantled and eventually all torn down. In this devastation was the loss of the original Mike’s Restaurant. Mike, Sr, retired from the business in 1965. After Mike’s retirement, the Simeone family moved Mike’s Restaurant to Greenwich Avenue in New Haven and ran it until roughly the mid-1970s. Frank (Butch) Buonocore, Mike, Sr’s son opened the restaurant back in West Haven in the mid-1970s on Wagner Place. Then, he bought the property at 111 Campbell Ave where Mike’s Apizza & Restaurant still exists to this day. To this day Frank is still making the dough and apizza with his son Mike. No smiles here but excellent red sauce for sure
