I tried this place via a neighbor's recommendation and it was sooo good. The cupcakes are fresh and moist and a really good size for the price. The buttercream is not overly sweet, but still sweet enough. These are literally my favorite cupcakes ever. The shop is in a great location with cute decor and friendly staff. The inside feels pretty instagrammable this time of year (cherry blossoms make the prettiest backdrop!).

I ordered my wedding cake from My Cake Theory and it caused a lot of stress and disappointment on the day of my wedding. To begin, I had a small surprise wedding, so I just wanted a little cake as shown in the image from Pinterest. I asked for the cake to be made exactly like that but say “surprise, we eloped” (we called 3 days later and asked for it to say “surprise, we got married” instead).I went the Saturday before our wedding (which was the following Saturday) and asked if I could pick it up the following Saturday morning. They said they couldn’t have it ready on Saturday but could have it ready on Friday. I said that’s fine, I can pick it up early. They said oh you can pick it up on Saturday. This made no sense to me but I said ok.It was $137 including tax for a 6” cake. I thought this was very overpriced, but went with it anyway because it’s my only wedding cake. They said for an 8” cake it would be an extra $75. This was ridiculous to me which is why I went with only 6”.When the man took my order, he sloppily wrote everything down on a blank piece of paper. The bakery had to call me the next day and ask me to confirm a bunch of details because they didn’t understand what things meant. Like “lemon raspberry”- did I want lemon cake and raspberry filling? Yes. What does “cream” mean, we don’t add cream to our cakes- cream is the color the frosting is supposed to be… They would benefit from a standardized ordering form.We agreed to pick up the cake Saturday around 11. My brother in law went to pick up the cake at 12 and they told him they were still frosting it. It was an hour after our agreed pickup time and they said the cake would actually be done the day before. This was evident when they gave him the cake, as it looked rushed and awful. There was a misprint on the cake as it said “surpriseD, we got married”, the font was bulky and not dainty like the photo, and it was smushed. Also there was a weird line around the S that looked like they started writing the S too big and just left it. I’m appalled that they thought that was acceptable to give us. Not to mention the fact that the cake was barely heart shaped and the frosting was big and messy with the wrong cherries. When I asked originally they said they would use the exact cherries with the stems.They reluctantly fixed the writing (after saying that I wrote down “SupriseD” so it was my fault) and gave us the cake as shown in the other photo. It still looked bad, so my sister had to get on the phone with them and explain what needed to be fixed with the cherries mainly.In the end, the cake ended up looking much better because they redid the writing and cherries. However, the cake wasn’t even the right kind- it was supposed to be lemon with raspberry filling. As you can see by the photo, it was only lemon. There was no raspberry filling.It took nearly 1.5 hours to get this cake fixed and it was clearly a rushed, sloppy job. For such an expensive cake for the size, I expected so much better from this bakery. I am amazed that they let a cake that awful go to us, the customer, with a typo and random “design”. I would not order a cake from here again and would not recommend others do.I really wanted to support local and give them the benefit of the doubt, and I appreciate that they at least were willing to fix the mistakes, but it added extra stress to my event day that we did not need. And I expected much more from such a well rated and expensive bakery. I am giving 2 stars because they fixed most of the mistakes, but I still think the quality was well below what it should’ve been.

Phenomenal Bakery!!! The individual who assisted me (I believe his name was Tony). Decorated beautiful cupcakes for me on the spot for a last minute birthday dinner I was heading too that same day. EVERYONE at the dinner spoke about how delicious & beautiful the cupcakes were. The birthday girl later said it was the best Red Velvet Cupcake she has ever tasted in her life lol. If you or your kids have food allergies, be incredibly careful ordering from here. I have a severe allergy to red food coloring (FD&C Red 40) which my boyfriend mentioned when he placed an order for cupcakes. He asked twice over the phone if the cake contained artificial food coloring and he was told, "no, everything is natural." It wasn't true. Many bakeries and restaurants sell red velvet cake without artificial dye -- Farmers and Distillers, Whole Foods, etc. but it's not as bright as cake made with red 40. We like to buy from local small business when possible. My boyfriend ordered a dozen red velvet cupcakes (my favorite) and gave them to me for Valentine's Day. Thankfully, I noticed how bright they were and I decided to have a little bit of frosting off of one of the cupcakes without red cake crumbles on top but not to eat them. Today, I called My Cake Theory and explained the situation so I could figure out if there was red 40 in them. The woman on the phone kept telling me the cupcakes don't have any fake food coloring, "red velvet is just red." (???) Someone in the background corrected her and said they do have artificial dye. I thanked the woman on the phone and said my boyfriend would probably be calling to follow up on his order. He called a little while later, and the woman who picked up first tried to say the cupcakes didn't contain any artificial dye. Then she told him that we should have known it had dye because it's red velvet. (Let me say this again... Whole Foods and many other places make red velvet cake without artificial dye... they use vegetable dyes... this is not a crazy concept.) Then the worst part... this could have landed me in the ER if we believed My Cake Theory and I ate one of the cupcakes... but instead of apologizing and offering a refund or even just another dozen cupcakes of a different flavor, they refused. They got confrontational and then offered 20% off our next order. I understand that this is an odd allergy to have, so I always ask follow up questions and I'm never rude if people get confused about it. But to lie repeatedly and refuse to take responsibility is unacceptable. Red 40 is a registered food dye and its legally required to be included in ingredient lists. I will say, I'm giving two stars because they smelled great and the tiny bit of frosting I tasted was really good. I want to support small businesses and I was really excited to try some of their beautiful cupcakes, but it's not safe if you have food allergies.

They even put a personalized Happy Birthday note in the package for me. He sent me a pic and they look amazing! I cant wait to visit DC soon to not only see my son but to try your cupcakes myself. He and his friends now have something delicious and amazingly decorated to make his day extra special! Can’t thank you enough for your hospitality and service!
Delicious bomb cupcakes!! Went in for a sweet treat while exploring Eastern Market. I got the banana pudding cupcake and it was yummy, regretting not snagging extra flavors. Will definitely go back to try out more flavors.
