This place is weird. I want to like it, because I love the vibe, and the coffee is cheap. It's a mix between a sit down restaurant and a coffeeshop, except it does neither of those things well. The service is so abysmally slow everytime I come here. It's not the fault of the wait staff, but the fact that there's not enough waiters for the size of the restaurant. I feel like everything would be solved if they just made it so you order up front then sit down. I waited 20 minutes before someone even gave me a menu, then had to flag the waiter down twice to take my order. After finishing my food I couldn't find my server, so I went up front and they told me my server's shift ended, and that someone would be by shortly for me to pay. 30 minutes later and still no server. If this was a one off, I'd understand, but this is the 3rd time I've come here, and had the same exact experience.

I used to come here a lot many years ago when I lived in DC, so I was really excited to come back today when I was in town. But my anticipated nostalgia quickly turned into disappointment. My friends were in the bathroom when the waiter finally came and dropped one glass of water and a menu on the table and walked away. I tried to say there were 3 of us, but he ignored me. He came back one minute later to ask what I wanted. I told him we were 3 people and before I could finish saying I wanted to wait for my friends to order, he rolled his eyes at me and walked away. He came back again and threw the additional waters and menus on the table without saying a word. He was soooooooo rude. Maybe he was having a bad day but he made me feel super uncomfortable and incredibly unwelcome. When my friends came back from the bathroom we got up and left. We were not interested in staying in a place like that. I will never ever go back again. Some of the worst service I’ve ever experienced. The waiter obviously hates his job, and takes it out on the customers.

I've been patronizing Tryst for a couple of decades and have come to appreciate its quirkiness. It's not the place to come if you're in a big hurry, but get to know the wait staff and you'll realize this is not just a place to eat; it's kind of a community. My only major complaint is that the wifi has been either completely down or spotty for weeks. Why doesn't management get this sorted out?
