Went for Sunday brunch. It was just ok.Warning - if you are at all fair skinned and go here during the day, there is no shade on the outside areas. The sun on the rooftop is just brutal. We went early at 11.00, and we asked to move; so did everyone else who was getting g blasted by the sun. While the ambience is nice, it wouldn’t kill them to get some umbrellas. The view is cool, you can see DTSP and downtown Tampa from the one side of the patio. It’s a little weird though to be right next to the hotel pool.The service was quite slow. Perhaps because it was early, they didn’t have the full staff yet. No big deal, we enjoyed the conversation at our table. But it took forever just to get drinks and refills.The food was just ok. It looked good, but generally lacked flavour. The guacamole was nothing but smashed avo and needed salt and acid. The avo toast was bland too and didn’t include the balsamic glaze as indicated on the menu. It would have been better with that and some salt. The chicken Gouda wrap was ok, served with plantain chips straight from a bag of Chiffles though. The shrimp and grits looked great but was served with spinach instead of arugula as advertised, and it was also bland. The shrimp needed somee kind of spice, and the grits needed salt and acid.Overall, this is just a hotel restaunt at mid-tier hotel in a close-in suburb of Tampa. There are a lot of rooftop bars in Tampa, and this one is just ok. I think we’ll try a lot of other places before we come back to Sal Y Mar.

The decor is pretty but every other thing about Sal Y Mar is subpar and unimpressive. There’s an attempt to be like a mix between a day club in Vegas and a restaurant in Tulum but it is awkwardly far off base. — Bland food, amateur drinks, and I think our waitress maybe said 4 words. — We were supposed to be notified of the 20% “large party charge” when we were at the door but weren’t informed so it was surprising to see the large party charge (we were a party of 2) on the bill ? We were THEN told that we should have been informed at the door and that the extra 20% was added because there was a pool party on the balcony so they were adding 20% to every bill whether you were outside attending the party or had nothing to do with the party and were dining inside? — I’d be fine if it was an automatic 20% TIP but it was literally just a charge for choosing to be there ? Something is going seriously wrong with their internal operations and for sure with their hiring and training — ? I’ll put it simply for you. experience is the equivalent of going on a date with someone you find attractive and then it turns out they have no personality, are completely uninteresting, and don’t have much to say — but they also forgot their credit card at home so you’ll have to pay the bill.

Had a 730 reservation outside. We were seated right at that time which was nice but it went down hill from there. Server didn't come to table until 10 minutes after we were seated. Drinks took 15 minutes to arrive after that. The appetizers we placed with the drinks took 45 minutes to come out. We ordered the bruschetta and crab cakes. The bruschetta was a ball of cheese on arugula with ONE small piece of crustini... The crab cakes (note the plural on the menu) is a singular crab cake. The server was apathetic at best and disinterested in serving at worst. In our hour long experience we were never asked for another drink, had our waters refilled, or really any general check ins. For the price point they are at, the service, ombionce , and food need to be much better. Maybe it was just an off night, but it didn't seem like the staff took much pride in the product.
