This was a pickup order:As someone who likes cooking and is an excellent cook (I’m told) I hardly eat out because I rather eat what I make, so my rule of thumb is to eat at restaurants that make foods I don’t make or are new to me, or at least go to a place with phenomenal service and ambiance even if the food is average and doesn’t blow my taste buds. I’m from South America, meaning, I’m very familiar with Hispanic cuisines from Latin America. That said, I already know this isn’t truly Mexican food. However, it’s a lazy Sunday and I was in the mood for chicken tortilla soup so I went ahead and ordered from Amigos.Chicken tortilla soup: The broth was tasty, chicken was tender. Hard to mess up a chicken tortilla soup.Taco salad: The tortilla bowl was stale, it wasn’t crispy or recently baked. Most of the salad was lettuce, there were no beans in it except some attempt of watery refried beans at the bottom of the rest of the ingredients which made the tortilla bowl wet by the time it arrived. Also there was at least half a cup of watered down sour cream literally dumped on top of everything which made it all even more wet and soggy. Please at least put the sour cream in a separate container for take out orders.Flan: Guys, if you re going to make flan, do it the right way… that is en baño María. Flan caramel is supposed to have a velvety smooth texture that “melts” in your mouth. Yours was crumbly (like scrambled eggs) with lots of bubbles and a bit dry. Which means it was over cooked. Not enough love in it.The restaurant business is hard, and it is always a challenge to keep employees and maintain good quality control. But spending $70.00 on 3 take out items (including a 20% tip) for food that has no TLC is quite disappointing.

Honestly, I have heard awesome things about this place and I was VERY disappointed. My friend’s dish was missing a main ingredient (how does that even happen). Mid chewing our waitress hovered over the table waiting impatiently to cash the check. My fork was literally in my hand. The place didn’t close for another 35 minutes and there were plenty of other patrons in the restaurant. I have worked in restaurants before and I understand wanting to close up at the end of the shifts, but maybe ask before hovering over the table while I shove food in my mouth. I’ll probably give it another whirl sometime, but not in the near future.

DON’T LET THE NAME FOOL YOUI don’t know about you but I actually really appreciate bad customer service. It’s honest.I get it, you don’t want to work at a Mexican restaurant. The tips are terrible because you have to serve food that’s sloppy and bland, bizarrely the restaurant is humid and I’m sure you just want to be somewhere else when you live on island. So bad customer service seems understandable and honest and I’d rather that, than something phony. But MAN, amigos is next level. The hostess/server at the door was incredibly curt, and was quite literally huffing and puffing like a toddler because I ordered a burrito or she had to seat someone or an order wasn’t out yet. It was strange to watch a full grown person having a middle school fit in public-at work. I looked at the couple who were waiting to be seated, we raised our eyebrows and laughed about it. But this isn’t an isolated incident.Several times over the course of 7 years I’ve been here, the staff has always been incredibly rude, not just overwhelmed with how busy it can be at times, because I get that, but they act as if I’ve stopped by their personal home in middle of the night and wanted to order a meal. The customer service here is very much a “what do you want?” type of mentality and less of a “can I help you with anything?” which I normally do not have a problem with. Like I said, I do appreciate the honesty. But the food has to be great. Or the cleanliness of the establishment has to be remotely good and or the staff have to be friendly. You really nail any one of these things and I’m a patron for life. Especially on a small island. But for amigos to have none of these things just overpriced bland food, an unclean establishment, AND unpleasant staff, it’s just not worth a trip here. What I can say about the quality of the the food is that the photos people post are accurate (even the five star review ones). The meals look like they have been plated by a soup kitchen or prison trustees. Also, no flavor whatsoever. The burritos have shrunk in size and doubled in price over the years. But they will happily drown your burrito, or enchiladas or tamales (please take these off the menu?) in a mediocre sauce to give flavor to a tasteless meal.I will say they do have a pretty consistent Chile verde that is not bad but the portions have also shrunk and the price has also nearly doubled. It’s also the only thing I recommend out of the maybe hundred dishes they have on their menu and that should tell you everything you need to know about the quality of food that is being served here. Every single item in this menu can be found with better taste and quality elsewhere on island. If you really want tasty Mexican food I suggest La Ploblana in Kihei (or their food truck in Kahului is even better) where the food is delicious and the staff is actually pleasant. And, is only about five minutes from Amigos. The same goes for Roasted Chiles. Great staff, great Mexican food and great signature drinks. The fajitas they make there are actually how they should be made. (See posted photos of amigos fajitas, ?the worst) and Roasted chiles is directly across the street. Both places are really tasty and funnily enough, they will actually treat you like you’re amigos.

Everything was good. Service, food, and atmosphere. Nothing really stood out as being excellent. After a late lunch, we shared the beef & chicken nachos with two sodas. Bill was $25ish. Decent price with large portion. No

Coming from Los Angeles, I'm always a little skeptical about Mexican food in other states. But Amigos did not disappoint!Great service. Food and drinks were yummy. We left just as karaoke was about to begin, but I bet it would have been a fun time had we stayed.
