An amazing treasure in rural Iowa. Menu is broad, with a wide selection of common favorites along with a few specialty items served only at the Skillet Cafe. We had the Skillet Plate for breakfast. Peppers and onions were cooked but still crisp, potatoes were also cooked to perfection. Eggs cooked perfectly as ordered (over medium). Service is excellent. Seated promptly and politely by courteous and helpful staff. Food served while still fresh. Follow up for drinks and other needs was very appropriate (not too little, not too much). Covid preparedness is A+. Seating is all 6 feet apart. Touch free menus available by scanning QR code at the table on your smart phone. Touch free checkout also available with credit card. Not just good Covid prep, good service. Very smart. Overall a great reason to visit Mt. Vernon Iowa as often as we can.

recently had a couple of breakfast at the Skillet. Both very good with pleasant staff. Probably the spot to go in Mt Vernon

Stopped by during during RAGBRAI so it was backed up but worth the wait. Corn beef hash was amazing! Service was good and entertaining

Everything at the Skillet that we have tried is excellent! They have awesome breakfast choices (served anytime) as well as gigantic freshly baked cinnamon rolls. Their stuffed baked potatoes are one of my favorite things and their salads are always full of such delicious fresh veggies. The serving sizes are all very generous and you will not leave hungry. It's one of our favorite places.

The wait was a little long for the breakfast meals, but my goodness it was delicious! My husband and I will definitely be repeat customers. Better coffee and faster wait time for food would get 5 stars. But please don't pass this place up if you are looking for a delicious breakfast/brunch.

We stopped by Skillet Cafe for a quick bite before a college visit at Cornell College. The atmosphere was what a diner should be, personable, open, and within the character of the community. The service was impeccable (quick, friendly, and efficient) and the food was exactly as if it was made by grandma. We ordered the two egg combo and a breakfast burrito. I should mention the prices are very reasonable as well. I definitely will be back when I am back in town.

Visiting this charming town was a delight, majority of the people I encountered were very friendly and nice, except for the skillet café. Hard to believe someone in the service industry does not have common courtesy the owner definitely failed hospitality class. Walked up to the restaurant outside service waitress looked at me like I was a Martian when I asked if I could have a seat. Then told me to go in and go towards the back and choose a seat which I did. It must have been the owner met me at the hostess stand and demanded that I stand there instead. The restaurant was about 10% full so there were seats everywhere. I tried to choose one at the recommendation of the waitress and was told no can't sit there have to move... wth... ? Now we're playing musical chairs. Once I was able to make it over to a table before I even sit down she asks "what do you want to drink" not "how can I help you not hello "nothing, perhaps her puppy got ran over and she was having a bad day I don't know. I informed her I had not even seen a menu yet feeling like I did something wrong she scolded me on the fact that... they can't hand out menus and I should have scanned it. I can't scan the menu which I could not. After several attempts would not work on my phone. the owner making me feel like I did something wrong she tells me that the menu is on the board. Why didn't she tell me that to begin with? i'm assuming it is the owner because I would never have an employee working at a restaurant with those service skills. The owner definitely failed hospitality class. The food was good no problems with that was tasty served hot and met expectations. Perhaps the owners can hire someone with better hospitality industry knowledge.Do you have to eat here get it to go

Went there with someone. Ask for orange juice, it was concentrate, ordered waffle and a side of potatoes for breakfast. Look I'm not looking for gourmet or organic breakfast but the waffle was like cardboard like an Eggo, they gave me corn syrup Smucker's, not maple syrup and the potatoes were frozen that were just stirred around to heat up or mic'ed. $7.75 for a lousy waffle! Really if you are charging this much for processed food you pick up from the grocery store then eventually you could spend money on REAL ingredients. The eggs were okay the one I went with said but how can you blow making eggs. Don't go here let other's in town know that you can make this at home for less.

How this place survives is beyond me, $10 for dry overcooked breakfast in a shabby crowded, loud small space, after 50 min, Yes 50 min. we decided to ask about our order and was told that is was just being prepared. Your drink will smell and taste like chlorine since they don't care to filter the water. For those high prices don't expect any service you will serve yourself and remove your own dishes. I will never return.

A great little place to eat for breakfast or brunch in Mt Vernon. Right in the middle of downtown and walking distance from the Cornell campus. We had a party of about 6, seating was tight, but they got us all seated. I think we may have overwhelmed the staff a little. I think they were short handed. Anyways, they took care of us and we got our food in a reasonable amount of time and it was reasonably correct. If you are in the area and need some comfort food, stop in.
