This modest diner is a sort of real-life version of the 1942 Edward Hopper painting, "Nighthawks." It's a living museum of urban America in the '30s and '40s. The narrow eatery with its 13-stool counter is unpretentious and immaculately clean, and the food is simple and relatively inexpensive. It's a treat to watch the action on the griddle and witness the sizzle and aroma of multiple items cooking at once. Theirs was an "open kitchen" long before that term was invented! Expectedly, the short-order menu featuring breakfast standards and familiar sandwiches is neither trendy nor diet-friendly. Steak n' eggs? Of course. Salad? Don't make me laugh. Nearly every item is loaded with carbs and/or fat. Moreover, the cook keeps squirting a yellowish liquid onto the grill to prevent food from sticking. Never mind, it's okay to indulge once in a while. The double cheeseburgers are yummylicious, and we absolutely must return to have breakfast here. The friendly banter among regulars makes this a good place to go if you're feeling lonely.

5 stars for the diner grill! This spot is great and it is everything you could want from a diner. It is small, so make sure that you got at a good time to secure a spot at the diner bar! We got two skillets and a waffle with ice cream to share which was great. I will be going back here for breakfast, lunch and dinner because they are open for 24 hours. Fun fact, they were open in the 30s! Great spot in Lakeview!

Hardest working and most incredible people run this restaurant. An absolute staple in the neighborhood, always good.
Everything here is fresh, hot, delicious, and filling. My go-to's are chilaquilles, biscuits and gravy, and skillets. Oh! And the churros!

I grew up in Southern California. I've never found a legit California breakfast burrito until I tried this place. Most places basically just add fries to a burrito but this place gets it right, basically just meat, fries, and pico de gallo, incredible. Thank you Diner Grill!

I stopped by early in the morning for breakfast and so glad I did! I got the bacon and egg sandwich w/ cheese on french bread. The bacon was cooked perfectly, and it has a nice little bar area to dine in if you like. My new favorite greasy spoon in the Irving Park area!
Great place for a late night bite!
