This charming sandwich shop is a MUST for anyone traveling or living in Illinois! We went there for our first time just after Christmas and had an Outstanding rueben and Scrumptious turkey club. The owner, Chris, even checked up on us and chatted for a bit. Such a Great restaurant and experience!! We're heading back after new years to enjoy more quality food!

I’ve lived in Crystal Lake for about 5 years now, and Breaking Bread has my favorite rueben, hands-down. Meat and kraut are what you’d expect, but this place really shines with the cheese and bread. Delicious melty swiss and fluffy rye with a nice, exterior crunch. The 80s dad-rock playlist is a plus for me, and my gluten-free partner highly recommends their celiac-safe options. Crystal lake staple.

So happy we have this fresh option right downtown Crystal Lake. Getting off the train and grabbing dinner super easy. They make a really great sandwich, but their cinnamon rolls are amazing!

We popped in on Johnny Appleseed Day to just grab a bite on the way out of the downtown festival. We walked in at 4pm and and little did we know they also closed at 4pm and we're shutting everything down for the day. They still took our order and it was still amazing even when they didn't have too. It was fantastic even though they were closing up shop for the day. I always recommend this place, good stuff fast and great people!

For a small little sandwich shop this place is fantastic. They do an excellent job on a number of sandwiches and is one of my favorite lunch spots. One of the best Ruben's in McHenry county.

The food is great, the staff makes it amazing. Classic deli food with some nice modern twists, and it's all fantastic. We've eaten here a ton of times and never been disappointed. The sides are all so good that we order way to many of them. The cheese curds and fried pickles are amazing. Beyond the food, the owner seems to be there working the register and the kitchen nearly every time we're there. He just seems so happy to deal with every customer. You really just feel like this is one of your family members that just wants to feed you because it makes him happy. No matter if I enter in a bad mood, or good mood, I leave happier than I started.

We went in for lunch and got a Chicago style hot dog, spicy chicken sandwich, and the chili mac. We were pleasantly surprised; everything was very good. The chicken sandwich had a very good breading and sauce, and the chili was hearty with a good flavor. I'm looking forward to going back and trying more food!

Came here with High Hopes after looking at the menu online. We had the award winning Italian (meat was good, the French roll was extremely tough, almost stale- and there was some generic storebought Italian dressing on it that ruined any remaining flavor of the veggies) the chili cheese dog (the dog and chili were ok but the pretzel bun was clearly microwaved marking it extremely tough and chewy, topped with a half melted American cheese slice ) the fried chicken bacon ranch sandwich (the only decent sandwich out of the 3) and for the sides fried pickle spears (incredible) and curly fries (good). I hope we came in on an off day because this was a literal laughable experience all around, from being charged for the wrong drink size to the menus having incorrect prices on just about everything ?
