After becoming a recurring visitor to Backlot Coffee - Evanston for their excellent coffee, I started adding an addictive "vegan morning scone" to my tab. Saw someone deliver a fresh batch midday one time, thus finally figuring out that Sugar & Spice makes these scones which have reset my expectations for scones. Now have to-do list item to visit Sugar & Spice's bakery.

I had a terrible experience ordering cookies from this bakery. I tried unsuccessfully to order 2 gift baskets online. Their website said that they were out of stock so I sent 2 separate emails asking when they would be back in stock and received no response to either email. I also called multiple times with no luck. Each time my call was answered by a very rude woman who either told she had no time, that she couldn't hear me, or would just hang up on me as soon as she answered. I've never had such a hard time giving a company MONEY. All in all, I would have spent over $60 dollars on 20 cookies and they apparently just don't want my business. No worries. I'm sure there is a different bakery that would love to have new business.

I tried two cookies from Sugar & Spice at Unicorn Cafe in downtown Evanston. I liked the oatmeal raisin more than the oatmeal chocolate chip walnut. It's a huge cookie for $2 (their website says it's 4 oz), much more than I would want to eat in one sitting, so I suggest sharing with a friend.

The other reviewers are correct....these are some of the best cookies and brownies that you'll ever taste! In fact, in a review by the Chicago Tribune of Unicorn Coffee in Evanston, the reviewer described Sugar & Spice's Oatmeal Raisin cookie as one of the best she's ever tasted. So that's cool. The challenge is in finding out where the cookies are carried, because so many places sell them but don't advertise who baked them. Examples in Chicago are Intelligentsia Coffee, Metropolis Coffee, and even in spas like Bliss or places like the cafe at Children's Memorial Hospital. Strange, but true. Lastly, I know that they do gift stuff too. So you can send your friends yummy cookies as well......

I lived in the same dorm as Heather K, and remember the cookies just as fondly. M&M or classic chocolate chip were my faves. Always fresh and tasty. They also sell these at some White Hen locations. Aww, now I want a cookie. :(

Sugar & Spice makes some of the greatest cookies known to man. Huge, soft cookies with just the slightest bit of crispiness along the edges. You might have actually eaten some of their creations without realizing it - they are the cookie supplier to Intelligentsia coffee shops! When I was in college we used to have a pre-finals week dorm event where everyone would gather in the common room to enjoy a big glass of milk and Sugar & Spice cookies - a delicious bit of comfort before the harsh reality of finals week set in. Oh, how I miss those days! I am partial to the M&M and the Double Chocolate varieties. Intelligentsia currently does not carry the chocolate ones but perhaps if enough people read this review and make the suggestion to management, we can bring about a cookie revolution. I promise it will be well worth the effort. If you visit their website, they have a bunch of gift options available, too. I know I certainly wouldn't object if someone bought me a box of cookies or brownies! ;)
